Influence Of Maternal Abandonment, High-Crime Neighborhoods, And Experienced Abuse On Aggressive Assaultive Behavior, Michael David Austin Flood

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Assault crimes committed by men in the United States need to be studied empirically if a significant reduction in their occurrence is to take place. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to examine the relationship between the reported experience of abuse, growing up in a high-crime neighborhood (HCN), and maternal abandonment with regards to individuals incarcerated for crimes that were operationally classified in this study as aggressive assaultive behavior (AAB). The framework that grounded this study was Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development and Beck’s perspective on framing, which guided the focus on how an individual frames an experience …

Predictors Of Paraphrasing Website Use In Undergraduate College Students, Lisa Marie Chervenak Apr 2024

Predictors Of Paraphrasing Website Use In Undergraduate College Students, Lisa Marie Chervenak

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

While instances of cut and paste plagiarism among undergraduate college students has decreased over the past several years, a new form of plagiarism has emerged that often goes undetected by these software systems. Paraphrasing websites allow users to enter information from a source, which the website will then reword, giving the appearance of an original work. When used by undergraduate college students, these students are not only committing plagiarism, but they are also not learning the material or working to develop writing skills. While much research has been conducted on the quality of writing created by paraphrasing websites, little research …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Six Sigma is a fact-based and data-driven methodology for improving products, processes, and services in companies across the world. Many project managers from various industries have tried to implement Six Sigma and have failed, resulting in poor quality of their products, inefficient processes, and cost increases. Grounded in the total quality management framework, the purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to explore strategies that project managers used to implement successful Six Sigma process improvement projects in nonmanufacturing environments. The participants were eight Six Sigma project managers who had experience in enhancing the success rates of Six Sigma process improvement …

Descriptive Study Of Coordination And Treatment In West Virginia’S Behavioral/Mental Health Crisis, Samuel Gordon Weaver Apr 2024

Descriptive Study Of Coordination And Treatment In West Virginia’S Behavioral/Mental Health Crisis, Samuel Gordon Weaver

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

West Virginia’s residents are less likely to have adequate access and effective care coordination when receiving behavioral and mental health treatment as compared to residents of other states. Seeking patterns of relationships can provide administrators with a better understanding of influences that might cause inter and intra-team systemic challenges and how to reorient policies and behaviors to ameliorate micro and macro task failures. The research questions and associated hypotheses involved understanding the nature of associations between three variables - behavioral health treatment status for autism spectrum disorder, behavioral health treatment status for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and professional mental health treatment …

Experiences Of Early Childhood Leaders In U.S. Nature-Based Learning Programs, Dr. Kristina Henrika Atler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are several benefits of nature-based learning (NBL), and participation in NBL supports developmental outcomes, especially in early childhood education; however, there was little research on how to successfully implement NBL. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of early childhood NBL leaders as they initiated and maintained NBL programs in the United States. The conceptual framework comprised elements of experiential learning theory, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, and place-based learning theory. Data were captured through interviews with 14 early childhood leaders (ECLs), observations of six learning spaces, and site-based document analysis. Data were transcribed, coded, …

Avoidant Attachment, Coping Styles, And Body Image In Adults With Trichophagia And Onychophagia Disorders, Maryam Mehrtash

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this quantitative research was to study the relationship between avoidant attachment, coping styles, and body image in adults with trichophagia and onychophagia disorders. The repeated failed attempts of patients to reduce or stop their compulsive behavior persist as a significant health concern for clinicians and researchers alike. Previous literature indicated that a lack of recognition of the underlying mental illness in these conditions exists and may be due to the absence of individualized treatment. Attachment theory, proposed in this study, integrates psychosocial and neurobiological factors to examine this study’s therapeutic constructs. Sixty-seven adults with trichophagia (N= 50) …

Socioeconomic Disparity Level And Telehealth Utilization Among Outpatient Healthcare Providers In California, Brittney Goodgame Apr 2024

Socioeconomic Disparity Level And Telehealth Utilization Among Outpatient Healthcare Providers In California, Brittney Goodgame

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The recent expansion of telehealth in the United States has created an opportunity for increased access to care for all patients, especially those with historically limited access. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, logistic regression analysis was used to determine if there is an association between community socioeconomic disparity level and telehealth utilization by healthcare providers. Secondary datasets were obtained through an independent insurance brokerage based in California. They contained claim level detail of patient visits conducted with outpatient healthcare providers in California. A random sample of 1,000 cases from the dataset were used for the completion of the study. …

The Experience Of Well-Being In Educators Who Transitioned From In-Person To Online Teaching, La Toya S. Glenn

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic created substantive stress and uncertainty for secondary educators, including responding to the shifts in delivering education from the traditional to the online classroom and back to the classroom. Improper training, increased work demands, increased responsibilities, and decreased autonomy took a toll on teachers’ work and home life. To better understand how teachers deal with transitions in online, hybrid, and in-person education, this study explored secondary educators' experiences of psychological well-being during the transitions from in-person to online teaching. An interpretative phenomenological approach guided the research design. Lazarus and Folkman's transactional theory of stress and coping was used …

Substance Users’ Perspectives On Harm Reduction Strategies In Housing First Programs, Tammy Montague Apr 2024

Substance Users’ Perspectives On Harm Reduction Strategies In Housing First Programs, Tammy Montague

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The social problem of housing instability for individuals with substance use issues is well known. Researchers have found that 50% of homeless individuals have a substance use disorder with a reduction in life expectancy compared to the general population. With 1% of the U.S. population experiencing homelessness, Housing First with its core component of harm reduction has been embraced by U.S. policymakers as a strategic solution towards ending homelessness through low-barrier permanent supportive housing. This generic qualitative study explored the perspectives of individuals with substance use experience about harm reduction strategies accessed that helped them to overcome system related barriers. …

Perceptions Of Patient-Healthcare Provider Relationships In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes, Desiree D. Lacey Apr 2024

Perceptions Of Patient-Healthcare Provider Relationships In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes, Desiree D. Lacey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The patient-healthcare provider relationship (PPR) is the foundation of clinical care: it is established as a human relationship and has a profound effect on health outcomes. Though PPR has been studied in multiple health domains, there is very little on its role in managing Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study was to better understand the challenges faced by healthcare providers (HCP) and T2DM patients within the clinical PPR for diabetes selfmanagement. The health belief model served as the theoretical framework and the diabetes self-management education program as the conceptual framework. Participants were recruited …

Frontline Supervisors’ Strategies To Mitigate Employee Turnover, Patrina Amos Apr 2024

Frontline Supervisors’ Strategies To Mitigate Employee Turnover, Patrina Amos

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Employee turnover consists of tangible and intangible costs that burden frontline supervisors and limit organizations’ profitability. During turnover, frontline supervisors bear the costs of losing the outgoing employee and the expenses of replacing the employee, which can be double the employee’s annual salary. Grounded in social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies that six frontline supervisors used to mitigate employee turnover. The data collected from semistructured interviews were thematically analyzed, resulting in four major themes: (a) communication, (b) supervisor support, (c) employee engagement, and (d) rewards and recognition. The primary recommendation is for …

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson Apr 2024

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Opioid overdose is the leading cause of death among the homeless, with limited access to housing, food, security, and medically assisted treatment (MAT). The women on MAT are affected because they may not be readily accepted into the housing community if considered non-abstinent, unlike other substance users who would not have those problems. There previously had not been research on how housing for women was affected when on MAT or any housing facilities that have established MAT protocol. In this generic qualitative design, 10 female participants on MAT who needed housing were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Bandura's social learning theory …

Strategies For Financial Sustainability In Family-Owned Nonprofit Organizations, Lance W. Cain Apr 2024

Strategies For Financial Sustainability In Family-Owned Nonprofit Organizations, Lance W. Cain

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The mission of many family-owned nonprofit organizations (FONPOs) is to provide goods and services to underserved communities and benefit society. However, less than 50% of FONPO leaders maintain sufficient cash reserves for 30 days of operations, and up to 13% are technically insolvent. Without adequate cash reserves, FONPO leaders risk decreased operational capacity and profitability, and insolvency, which may lead to business closure. Grounded in the resource-based view and commitment–trust theories, the purpose of this qualitative single-case case study was to explore strategies used by some organizational leaders to ensure the financial sustainability of FONPOs. The participants were four senior …

With only 21% of high school graduates in the Virgin Islands advancing to higher education, understanding and addressing challenges in implementing service-learning is important for enhancing student outcomes. The study, guided by Dewey’s theory of experiential education and Kolb’s theory of service learning, used semistructured interviews to gather data from …

Understanding Nurses' Experience Of The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lens Of Trauma, Grace Simmons Apr 2024

Understanding Nurses' Experience Of The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lens Of Trauma, Grace Simmons

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The destructive effects of the trauma experienced by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic left nurses with long-term psychological and physical effects that impaired their ability to effectively care for their patients, their families, and themselves. Although researchers have described the nurses’ experiences using generalized psychological and physiological trauma-related symptomatology, none have grounded their studies within the context of trauma theory. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the lived experience of nurses caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients during the pandemic through the lens of trauma theory. The constructivist self-development theory (CSDT) provided the framework for understanding …

The Investigation Of Collaboration Among First-Year Bachelor Of Science Nursing Students, Christie Marie Cavallo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite the benefits of collaboration, first-year nursing students prefer not to work together. It was important to find out why nursing students do not want to collaborate. The purpose of this study was to discover first-year nursing students’ and faculty’s perceptions of how instructor-created opportunities for collaboration contributed to first-year nursing students’ collaboration. Using Wenger’s communities of practice (CoPs) model as a lens, the data were explored using a qualitative explanatory case study approach. This study consisted of individual interviews of 12 first-year nursing students and nursing faculty. Inclusion criteria included students enrolled in or faculty teaching first year of …

Effects Of A Mentorship Program On High Need College Students: Reflections From Mentors And Mentees, Stephen Miske, Olusegun Sogunro

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

On average, the college graduation rates for minority and/or high-need students are generally low. To address this situation, a Mid-Atlantic Consortium recently secured a grant to improve 4-year graduation rates of high-need students (i.e., new first-time students and transfer students who qualify as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult students, and/or students of color) by 20% over each selected college’s baseline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of students and faculty mentors toward accomplishing this goal. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Some of the effects identified in this study included enhanced academic …
