Creating Commons: Photovoice Philosophy In A Third Space, Jason M. Cox, Lynne Hamer
Creating Commons: Photovoice Philosophy In A Third Space, Jason M. Cox, Lynne Hamer
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Teach Toledo is a program that the authors co-coordinate using community assets to create a third space to confront systemic racism’s impact on teacher education programs and facilitate hybridity (Bhaba, 1994). Diverse student cohort members use their lived experience as the base for their individual and shared urban educational philosophies, coordinated in a first-year horizontally and vertically integrated curriculum including written compositions and a PhotoVoice project. “Creating commons” refers not only to provision of a third space as a common space where private experiences can be combined to create a hybrid, new understanding, but also to the creative act of …

The Right To Education: A Reality Or Pipe Dream For Incarcerated Young Prisoners In Malawi, Samson Chaima Kajawo, Lineo R. Johnson
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Young people are often incarcerated in penitentiaries worldwide. Incarceration is not expected to hinder their access to quality education. This article, guided by Marxist theory, examines the practicality of educational rights at five young prisoners’ facilities in Malawi. The study used a descriptive phenomenological qualitative research design to engage the voices of 52 incarcerated and released young people in semi-structured interviews to ascertain if prisoners’ quality education was a reality or mere pipedream at young prisoners’ facilities. The findings show a disparity between correctional education policies and the actual reality. Due to the inadequacy of resources and the negativity of …

Internal Medicine Publications
Hydralazine-induced vasculitis can be challenging to recognize and diagnose as presenting symptoms vary and can mimic other conditions or diseases, however, swift intervention and treatment is key in halting progression of the disease and providing patients with the best possible outcomes. A 71-year-old African American female presented to the emergency department with weakness, fatigue, anemia, blood-streaked sputum, fever, chills, and severe myalgias. Hydralazine was prescribed to treat resistant hypertension eight months prior to presentation. Hydralazine was discontinued on hospital day (HD) 4. Pertinent laboratory values showed elevated inflammatory markers, positive antinuclear antibody (ANA), negative rheumatoid factor (RF), normal complement levels, …
An Interprofessional Active-Learning Laboratory On Urinary Incontinence, Krista L. Donohoe
An Interprofessional Active-Learning Laboratory On Urinary Incontinence, Krista L. Donohoe
Health Sciences Education Symposium
Background/Objectives:Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common syndrome with peak prevalence in older adulthood. Involuntary loss of urine from the bladder may be due to physical abnormalities, pelvic floor dysfunction, or reversible causes, like medication or infection.1 UI is an underreported and underdiagnosed geriatric syndrome that significantly impacts quality of life, increases risk of institutionalization, and contributes to significant patient- and system-level healthcare expenditures.1 Healthcare practitioners require knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality care to older adults with UI. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute on Aging, and American Geriatrics Society recommend the healthcare …

Strength In Caring: An Interprofessional Innovation To Cultivate Organizational Wellness, Kelly Lockeman
Health Sciences Education Symposium
Background. The impact of COVID-19 on the physical and mental health of individual providers and entire health care systems has had a devastating blow to already fragile networks.[1] It is imperative to identify strategies that heal, repair, and build capacity in health care providers and fix the system in which they practice. Building resilience through self-care is only a part of the solution.[2,3] Health care organizations are striving for solutions that target issues such as psychological safety, interprofessional teamwork, and wellness-centered leadership, which are more likely to reduce burnout than individualized self-care programs.[4,5] The purpose of the Strength in Caring …

Public Transit Agency's Management Strategies During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Xueming Chen
L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications
Like the rest of the USA, the Greater Richmond, Virginia (RVA) region severely suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic impacts in multiple areas. The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) took big hits in its system transit ridership in fiscal years (FY) 2020 and 2021. In response to this emergency, GRTC immediately implemented bold management strategies to protect its operators and riders, serve essential trips, adjust operating schedules, offer free transit services, and broaden funding sources. As a result of implementing these emergency management strategies, GRTC successfully overcame the pandemic crises and embarked on the road to full recovery in its transit …
The U.S. And Chinese Transportation Policies And Practices For The Transportation-Disadvantaged Populations: A Literature Review-Based Comparative Study, Xueming Chen
L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications
Even though China has entered the aging society almost 20 years ago and passed elderly and disability-related laws, its transportation-related facilities and services for the elderly and disabled remain insufficient, which has seriously impacted its Transportation-Disadvantaged Populations’ travel and quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to examine other advanced countries’ best planning practices in specialized transportation services to assess their applicability to China. This paper first reviews the U.S. and Chinese laws, regulations, implementation measures and studies related to the elderly and disabled transportation. Afterwards, it conducts an analysis on the differences between the U.S. and China and assesses …

Enhancement Of Metal Nanostructure Deposition On Silicon Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures By Galvanic Replacement, Nicholas Simpson, Eric J. Broadhead, Addison Casto, Katharine M. Tibbetts
Chemistry Publications
We report a chemically motivated, single-step method to enhance metal deposition onto silicon laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) using reactive laser ablation in liquid (RLAL). Galvanic replacement (GR) reactions were used in conjunction with RLAL (GR-RLAL) to promote the deposition of Au and Cu nanostructures onto a Si LIPSS. To increase the deposition of Au, sacrificial metals Cu, Fe, and Zn were used; Fe and Zn also enhanced the deposition of Cu. We show that the deposited metal content, surface morphology, and metal crystallite size can be tuned based on the difference in electrochemical potentials of the deposited and sacrificial …

Chemistry Publications
Laser synthesis in liquids is often carried out in organic solvents to prevent oxidation of metals during nanoparticle generation and to produce tailored carbon-based nanomaterials. This work investigates laser ablation of neat organic liquids acetone, ethanol, n-hexane, and toluene with pulse widths ranging from 30 fs to 4 ps through measurements of reaction kinetics and characterization of the ablation products with optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Increasing the pulse width from 30 fs to 4 ps impacts both the reaction kinetics and product distributions, suppressing the formation of solvent molecule dimers and oxidized molecules while enhancing the yields of …

Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environment Publications and Presentations
This study examines the low-income energy efficiency programs funded by Virginia’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Its goal is to understand the extent to which those programs can address the problem of high energy burdens among Virginia’s low-income residents, and to estimate the impacts that those energy efficiency investments could have on the broader Virginia economy.
Our report begins with a review of existing research on “energy burdens,” or the concept that some residents, particularly those in lower income brackets, spend a disproportionate percentage of their incomes on home energy costs (heating, cooling, etc.). We then discuss …

Incorporation Of Poly(Tfema) In Perovskite Thin Films Using A Supercritical Fluid, Kasey Handy, Gary C. Tepper
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
A new process is reported for the incorporation of a fluoropolymer into a solid perovskite film. Poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) [CH2C(CH3)(CO2CH2CF3)]n was delivered to methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite films by crystallizing the film in supercritical carbon dioxide/ethanol containing the dissolved fluoropolymer. The surface was characterized before and after fluoropolymer exposure using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The results indicate that the fluoropolymer was incorporated into the perovskite film during the supercritical fluid crystallization process. The incorporation of a hydrophobic fluoropolymer …
