Vcu Today (1974-01-24)

VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Surgical Treatment Of The Upper Extremity In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Charles L. Mcdowell Jan 1974

Surgical Treatment Of The Upper Extremity In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Charles L. Mcdowell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All surgical procedures designed to preserve or improve function in the extremities, whether in rheumatoid arthritis or not, must consider the functional emphasis of the upper extremity as compared to the lower extremity. The upper extremity has, as its primary goal, mobility and prehension, whereas in the lower extremity, stability is the most important goal, mobility the next in order of importance, and prehension the least important. For example, the feet fulfill a need for stability with very little requirement for prehension, but the hand is more an instrument for prehension and there is less need to consider stability. I …

In view of the increased frequency of chromosome rearrangements demonstrated in these couples and the importance of counseling for future pregnancies, it would be wise to consider cytogenetic evaluation when all other probable causes for recurrent abortion have been ruled out.

Advances In Neuroradiology, Frederick S. Vines, Charles Bonstelle

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The development of two new radiological techniques has significantly enhanced the performance of neuroradiological diagnostic procedures. The first of these was installed as the prototype unit at the Medical College of Virginia in November of 1972 and has marked advantages for the performance of encephalography, angiography, and air myelography. The present communication will relate the experiences of the author during the initial 15 months of clinical evaluation. The second technique is an entirely new concept of obtaining further information from the data provided by the penetration of x-ray photons. Each of these units will be discussed briefly with an outline …

Surgery In Rheumatoid Arthritis: General Indications And Philosophic Considerations, R. S. Bryan Jan 1974

Surgery In Rheumatoid Arthritis: General Indications And Philosophic Considerations, R. S. Bryan

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, orthopedic surgery has much to offer the rheumatoid patient, particularly if the proper patient is chosen at the proper time. The advent of the total joint replacements, now in its infancy, gives renewed hope for the salvage of many derelicts and for the prevention of the severe disabilities and deformities which were all too frequent in the past.

Still's Disease In Adults, William M. Edwards, Stephen R. Koller, Michael J. Miller Jan 1974

Still's Disease In Adults, William M. Edwards, Stephen R. Koller, Michael J. Miller

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In 1897, Dr. George F. Still described 22 children with a form of chronic joint disease which differed from rheumatic fever. Twelve of these children had a syndrome characterized by glandular and splenic enlargement which, with a characteristic fever pattern, rash, and arthritis, has become known as Still's disease. Subsequent investigators have described patients over age 16 presenting with similar signs and symptoms suggesting that this syndrome is not specific for children. We recently studied a patient in whom the diagnosis of adult onset Still's disease was made.

Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes Jan 1974

Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes

Theses and Dissertations

Until the mid to late 1800's, the cerebral hemispheres were considered to be only the sites of mentation and intellectual activity. On the basis of his observations of epileptic patients, HughIings Jackson (cited from Walshe, l935a) theorized that the cerebral hemispheres were also sites of motor control and sensory experience. The electrical excitability of the cerebrum was first demonstrated by Fritsch and Hitzig in 1870. Since then the motor representation of the various muscles has been mapped out and the types of movement in response to stimulation of the motor cortex and the pyramidal tract have been thoroughly studied.

The Relationship Of The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Inventory To Clients Of A Methadone Maintenance Program, Margaret Ann Neale

Theses and Dissertations

An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.

Twenty-one clients of the program, seven subjects in each of phases I, II, and III, were given the 16 PF by their counselors between September 10 and …
