I have made it my task with this paper to outline principles for the treatment of ovarian carcinoma. Emphasis has been laid on pathology and on anatomical extent of the growth. The extension of the tumor should be outlined in detail at clinical examination and at laparotomy. Excision of the carcinoma should be performed to the greatest possible extent. Every effort should be made to keep the capsule intact. In cases of serous and endometrioid carcinoma fixed to surrounding tissue by firm adhesions, it may be appropriate to restrict the operation to an explorative laparatomy and to operate on the …

The Controversy Over Generic Equivalency Of Drugs, Werner Lowenthal

The truth about generic equivalency has not yet been determined. The arguments in the generic equivalency controversy are confounded by names, proprietary (trademark, brand name) as opposed to non-proprietary (generic, branded-generic), yet quality of the products is not necessarily related to any name. The efficacy and not the name of the product is important. The crucial question to ask is whether the product is clinically or therapeutically effective, giving reliable and uniform results.

Rational therapy requires accurate diagnosis. When we apply this precept to anxiety a fundamental question arises. Is anxiety an illness in terms of the now berated medical model which holds that an illness has a cause, a natural history, and hopefully a cure? Or is anxiety a basic aspect of the human condition, an innate pattern of response which becomes pathological when stress, induced by physiologic and social forces, is magnified out of proportion to the original stimulus? If the latter is true, then stress and social interactions are the causative factors, the anxiety only a reaction. Logically then, the …

Adrenergic Stimulation And Sodium Transport, Charles O. Watlington

The effect of catecholamines and a beta-adrenergic blocking agent on sodium flux and short-circuit current was evaluated in isolated frog skin. Alpha stimulation (pronethalol plus epinephrine) decreased net sodium flux and short-circuit current to an equivalent degree. Kinetic studies during alpha stimulation demonstrated a decrease in rate coefficient for entry into the skin transporting compartment but no change in the rate coefficient presumed to be related to active transport. Beta stimulation (isoproterenol) produced an equivalent increase in sodium influx and outflux with no change in net flux, and development of non-sodium current. This institution began as part of a liberal arts college. This tradition in the state of Virginia started with Mr. Jefferson when the University was established at Charlottesville. A number of years ago I decided to attempt to measure the intracellular pH of skeletal muscle by a more direct method than those in current use, that is, by an electrode. I excluded all forms of pH electrodes except the glass electrode and then set up a certain number of characteristics or requirements that this electrode should have. First, the electrode should be insulated in such a manner that only the pH-sensitive portion is in the cell cytoplasm. Second, the reference side of the electrode group should also be within the cell, because the cell has a transmembrane potential; …

In summary, one can find many reasons for believing that family planning programs should in general be associated with maternity services and that educational efforts should be concentrated during the weeks of pregnancy and the puerperium. During these periods the women of an age and fertility most in need of family planning are easily detectable. They are for obvious reasons interested in the subject and the most susceptible to advice. The staff needed for this work is already partly available among the physicians, nurses, midwives, and social workers connected with maternity services. In this lecture I want to address myself to the questions: What is the lowest oxygen tension compatible with adequate function, and what are the factors that set this limit? Much of the background to the material present here has been reviewed extensively in the not too distant past (Jӧbsis '64), and I will take the liberty of letting that article provide most of the detailed justification of my remarks today. VCU University History Books

After the 1965 Bird Commission recommended the creation of a state university in Richmond, the state legislature named a commission to develop an implementation plan headed by Edward A. Wayne Sr., president of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank.

Their recommendation, supported by the Governor and General Assembly, was the creation of Virginia Commonwealth University. Wayne was named vice-rector of the first Board of Visitors of VCU, and the University's Wayne Medal honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions or provided exemplary service to VCU.
