VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Although as a prophet this wag may have overstated the case as it concerns the therapy of urinary tract infections (UTI), the character of contemporary infectious diseases is, in part, due to the use and abuse of anti-infective agents. Human paleopathologists are interested in the visible marks of diagnosable disease that reflect various aspects of human biocultural interaction. Whether infectious, nutritional, or a combination of both, pathological characteristics in the dry bone provide some insight into the health of past human populations. Paleoepidemiology and human paleopathology are important parts of ecology in that they deal directly with a major aspect of man's relationship to his environment. The significance of this relationship has, to a large extent, been neglected by human skeletal biologists. Testicular neoplasms are relatively rare with approximately two new cases per 100,000 male population occurring per year. The peak occurrence is between the ages of 20 and 40. Because of their highly malignant characteristics testicular neoplasms must be treated aggressively if cure is to be achieved.

Pre-Columbian Tuberculosis: An Epidemiological Approach, Jane E. Buikstra, Della C. Cook

In this study we have combined both biological and cultural data in the investigation of resorptive pathology in Woodland and Mississippian skeletal series from west-central Illinois. Information concerning the types of lesions and their distribution confirms the presence of a previously unknown disease in Mississippian populations. Adults and adolescents from Yokem and Schild Mississippian components clearly display cystic vertebral pathology, which in association with other peripheral osseous lesions distinguishes them from earlier groups. This idea is supported indirectly by evidence from both infants and children of the Schild sample.

Porotic hyperostosis is bone expansion caused by hypertrophy of blood-forming marrow. It usually affects the skull diploë in adults and the long bones, face, skull vault, and sometimes the trunk in children, often with some thinning and porosity in the cortex and even the formation of a double cortex (bone-in-bone) in severe infections. Excess formation of red cells in hematogenous marrow can come from sicklemia or thalassemia (especially in the homozygous form), from other hemolytic anemias including unusual blood defects like spherocytosis, and from iron deficiency anemia. The major focus of paleopathology has been the delimiting of disease in time and space. Information about the history of specific diseases is the objective of many of these studies. While the chronological and geographical dimensions of paleopathology contribute significantly to our knowledge of disease, there are limits to this approach, which often fails to consider the interaction of biology and culture in the disease of prehistoric populations.

Human skeletal remains have been recovered from prehistoric and early historic sites in Louisiana with some degree of regularity for the past 75 years and on an irregular basis for the last 300 years. During his explorations of aboriginal sites throughout the Lower Mississippi River Valley, Moore made a special effort to collect skeletal specimens for shipment to the US National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. A less well-known fact is that he also collected pathological specimens for shipment to the Army Medical Museum at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. In order to contribute significantly to the description and understanding of human disease, paleoepidemiology must first recognize requirements which epidemiologists have long considered essential: 1) that the populations sampled are relevant to a set of specific hypotheses concerning a particular set of diseases: 2) that an adequate sample is employed to accurately represent the whole population: and 3) that wherever possible, sex and age parameters are accurately controlled. Much of the joy and sorrow of life revolves around attachments or affectional relationships--making them, breaking them, preparing for them, and adjusting to their loss.

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade

Concern over environmental contamination leading to the introduction of pentachlorophenol into human and animal systems has resulted in the need for a rapid and direct method for determining trace concentrations of this highly toxic compound. A direct electrochemical procedure has been developed for determining trace conccentrations of this phenol dovm to 0.27 ppm. This method uses the electrochemical techniques of differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode, and differential pulse voltammetry at the carbon paste electrode to reduce pentachlorophenol for this determination. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the change in serum osmolality in the chronic renal failure patient on hemodialysis and the number of clinical symptoms of the dialysis disequilibrium syndrome experienced during hemodialysis. The study was conducted at the Renal Dialysis Unit of an urban medical center located in a southeastern city. Data were collected from May 25, 1978 to June 30, 1978. Data were obtained during 28 hemodialysis procedures performed on 11 subjects.
