Critique [Of Chicano Ethnicity And Aging By Marvin A. Lewis], Ron Striano

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Art serves the societal functions of recording, interpreting and predicting. Here, analysis of popular archetypes in Chicano fiction and poetry are used to illustrate cultural values toward the elderly and conflicts of values between generations of Chicanos. This leads to an examination of how Chicano values differ from Anglo-American values toward the elderly. The author demonstrates the problems of acculturation, blending into and enriching another culture while retaining a sense of one's own culture, versus assimilation, abandoning one's own heritage and taking on the values of another culture. In the latter, upward mobility striving by younger Chicanos creates a chasm …

Observance of Southeast Asian parents and their preschool children during English as a Second Language (ESL) classes suggests that rethinking commonly held developmental phenomena in psychosocial development may produce insight into Southeast Asian culture and childrearing, middle class American culture and childrearing, and child development in general. Because it meets the needs of parents, the Des Moines Area Community College offers child care with ESL classes for refugees in the Ames, Iowa, area.[1] This article is based on observations from nearly five years of experience in the refugee nursery school with parents and young children. Evaluation Of Analytical, Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Methods For The Study Of Digoxin, Santosh John Vetticaden

The primary objective of the research was to investigate the pharmacodynamics of digoxin in dogs. Initially an assay specific for digoxin in the presence of its major metabolites, viz., digoxigenin, digoxigenin mono-digitoxoside, digoxigenin bis-digitoxoside and dihydrodigoxin was developed using HPLC-RIA. Methodology for non-invasive measurement of left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and other systolic time intervals (STI) in beagle dogs were developed. This involved surgery for exteriorization of the carotid artery in the dogs and subsequent measurements of LVET and STI after recovery. STI, heart rate (HR) and digoxin levels were monitored in normal beagle dogs administered 0.05 mg/kg or 0.025 …

The synthesis, characterization, and chemical properties of Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSP) and Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSE), (5-X- SSP2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)benzenethiolate; 5-X- SSE2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)ethanethiolate; X = Br, Cl, H, CH3O), which contain tridentate (ONS) Schiff base ligands is described. The chemical properties of these molybdenum complexes are compared with those which possess tridentate (ONO) Schiff base ligands. Cyclic voltammetry was used to obtain cathodic reduction potentials (EPC) for the quasi-reversible reduction of the cis-dioxomolybdenum (VI) complexes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) upon thermoregulation and respiration. Eight adult males whose ages ranged from 19 to 33 years were asked to engage in this study. The respiratory parameters included oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory quotient, minute ventilation, and breathing frequency. The thermoregulatory parameters included rectal temperatures and total skin temperatures. Before experimentation commenced, each subject underwent a maximum oxygen consumption test (VO2 max) to determine 60% of their VO2 max. Purified Schwann cells were cultured from neonatal rat sciatic nerve using a modification of the method of Brockes (Brockes, J.P. et al, Brain Res. 165(1979) 105-118). Schwann cells and contaminating fibroblasts were unambiguously identified using fluorescent antibodies to 2'3' cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase and the thy 1.1 antigen respectively. The Schwann cells were quiescent unless challenged with mitogens, They proliferated rapidly in response to the soluable mitogen, cholera toxin, or to membrane fractions from rat CNS or PNS, prepared by the method of DeVries (DeVries, G.H., J Neurochem, 40 (1983) 1709-1717). Macrophage phenotype/function can be modulated by various T-cell lymphokines (LK). The alteration of macrophage phenotype is a result of LK concentration, duration of exposure, and the level of macrophage activation when obtained from in vivo sources through elicitation by either sterile irritants or immune cellular mechanisms. In order to dissect macrophage activation into discrete signals T cell hybridomas were constructed by fusing HAT sensitive BW5147 cells with nylon-wool purified, con A stimulated T cells. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of needle play in reducing pre-school children's anxiety concerning injections. The Pre-school Observational Scale of Anxiety was used to measure the degree of anxiety experienced by the children. The hypothesis stated that there would be a significant decrease in anxiety of pre-school children who participated in needle play as compared with the anxiety scores of pre-school children who did not participate in needle play.The sample consisted of 20 pre-school children who were receiving routine health care and injections for immunizations or PPDs (purified protein derivative) at a county health department …
