VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Ethnic Studies is generally viewed as a minor program in the academy, lacking research philosophy and methodology. Consequently, scholars who attempt research concerning peoples of color focus on the "group": their social history, migration patterns, political and economic development, educational attainment, and lifestyle. Social science disciplinary guidelines are the usual framework. John Hatfield's "Identity as Theory and Method for Ethnic Studies" provides a basis for truly understanding ethnicity.

Jean Price-Mars was a Haitian-born diplomat, intellectual, educator, novelist, biographer, critic, editor. He was the author and founder of Philosophy of Haitianism and the Spiritual Father of Negritude. During his lifetime he served as Education Director-General of Haiti and Ambassador to the Republic of San Domingo, the United Nations and France. He was also distinguished as the Secretary of the Haitian U.S. delegation to the Berlin Embassy and Commissioner of the Missouri Exhibition.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper is a commentary on current views of early development in art and argues for a theory which emphasizes a more active role of the learner in the refinement of perceptual ability, particularly in drawing development. Independent perception is presented as a primary source of children's visual imagery: and inference and problem solving, rather than imitation, are seen to characterize the drawing process as well as to indicate proper methods of instruction. Discussion also considers the shift away from inquiry in this area.

Political scientist Virginia Sapiro's introductory-level women's studies text is unusual in the ease with which it integrates the data bases which form the foundation for its multidisciplinary approach. Although it assumes no background in the social sciences, the book is nevertheless demanding in the rigor and complexity of its analysis. Striking a balance between societal and individual concerns, the work moves easily from one framework to another, drawing content and methodology from fields as diverse as biology and religion.

Electrochemical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature, Ph, And Electrolyte On The Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cytochrome C, Kent Brian Koller

Spectroelectrochemical and electrochemical methods have been used to investigate the characteristics of heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and indium oxide electrodes. Direct electron transfer between cytochrome c and solid electrodes is of interest due to the interfacial character of electron transfer between the protein and its membrane-bound physiological redox partners. The conformation of ferricytochrome c is affected more by changes in temperature or pH than is its reduced form, ferrocytochrome c. This difference in conformational stability is attributed to the +1 charge of the heme in ferricytochrome c that is largely embedded in the hydrophobic interior of the enzyme. …

In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.

The results obtained from the free radical assay did not show any correlation to the results observed either in vitro …

This experiment was designed to determine the effect essay writing has on learning introductory level college mathematics, learning mathematical skills, problem-solving and mathematical applications, and the retention of new knowledge in mathematics. The independent variable was the writing of essays. Essay writing included responding to questions assigned as homework and addressing mathematical situations presented in in-class activities. The dependent variables were overall achievement, skills, applications, and retention in each of these areas. The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts

The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.

Purified human C3a was iodinated (¹²⁵I-C3a) and used to study the interaction of labeled peptide with rat peritoneal mast cells (RMC). Cellular binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a occurred within 30 sec, followed by a rapid dissociation from the cell. Both the binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a and the rate of dissociation from the cell were temperature dependent. At 0°C, the binding of ¹²⁵I-C3a was increased and the rate of dissociation reduced, as compared to 37°C. Once ¹²⁵I-C3a was exposed to RMC, it lost the ability to rebind to a second batch of RMC.
