A Monte Carlo Study Of Methanol Clusters (Ch3oh)N, N=5-256, D. Wright, M. S. El-Shall

The thermodynamic and structural properties of methanol clusters (CH3OH) N , N=5–15, 20, 30, 60, 128, 256 and the bulk liquid have been investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. Calculated properties as a function of size include electrostatic and dispersive contributions to the configurational energy, configurational heat capacities,fractal dimension, density profiles, order parameters characterizing dipole and bond vector orientation, and the Lindemann index. The clusterheat capacities as a function of N possess an interior maximum near N=128 and converge to the bulk value from above. Condensation Of Supersaturated Vapors Of Hydrogen Bonding Molecules: Ethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Trimethylene Glycol, And Glycerol, David B. Kane, M. Samy El-Shall

The critical supersaturations required for the homogeneous nucleation (rate of 1 drop cm−3 s−1) of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol and glycerol vapors have been measured over wide temperature ranges (e.g., 280–400 K) using an upward thermal diffusion cloud chamber. At lower temperatures the experimental nucleation rates are much higher than the predictions of the classical nucleation theory. Glycerol shows the best agreement between experiment and theory in the temperature range of 340–370 K. This essay focuses on a theory of human development that has been promoted aggressively by a group of Afrocentrists in recent years - that the Western Hemisphere was first populated by "Africoids" or "Black" people who came to the Americas by way of Asia and the Bering Straits with little or no change in their physical or racial characteristics. As discussed in this article, the theory has no support in the evidence collected by scientists in various fields. Since the days of Shils and Geertz it has been common to refer to ethnicity as a bond, a tie, or an attachment. Shils used the term "tie" in the title of his seminal 1957 article to refer to a set of social relationships, including what he called "civil," "kinship," "sacred," and "primordial." The primordial tie was notable for the "ineffable significance" which social actors attribute to it and to the relationship which it engenders: "the attachment [is] not merely to the other ... as a person, but as a possessor of certain especially 'significant relational' qualities, which could only …

In certain experimental situations, the data observed are pseudo-proportional. By this, we observe the numerator, the number of responders, but the denominator, the total number, is random and, possibly, unobserved. In such situations, the data often exhibit "extra" variability due to the randomness of the denominator. Analysis of these data should account for this overdispersion. Several authors have proposed parametric approaches to this problem. Finney [Biometrika (1949) 36, 239-256] proposed the use of a mixture of the binomial and Poisson distributions. Recent evidence implicates anandamide as the endogenous ligand for the cannabinoid receptor. One purpose of this study was to determine the structural requirements for anandamide's receptor interaction and the influence of phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), an enzyme inhibitor, on receptor affinity. A second objective was evaluation of the correlation between affinities of the analogs and in vivo pharmacological activities. The ability of anandamide and analogs to displace [3H]- CP 55,940 was determined by a filtration assay. Displacement curves for anandamide in the presence of PMSF produced a Ki of 89 ± 10 nM; without PMSF the Ki increased to 5400 ± …

Pediatric constipation can lead to various negative emotional and physical consequences including abdominal pain, painful defecation, toileting fears, anxiety about pain and intestinal dysfunction. In addition, constipation can lead to socially compromising and embarrassing situations due to associated overflow incontinence. These unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms may in tum lead to conditioned avoidance behaviors, which serve to further maintain the cycle of stool retention and constipation. Presently, there have not been any studies directly addressing the role of conditioned aversion in the etiology and maintenance of constipation. Determining the fragility of the red blood cell (RBC) is important for the diagnosis of and evaluation for treatment of several RBC diseases. In part RBC production is controlled through the hormone erythropoietin secreted by the kidney. In a previous study from this laboratory, it was found that RBC were more stable in uremic male rats compared to controls. In this experiment, uremia was induced in four groups of female rats through a two stage nephrectomy. The nephrectomy involved the removal of two-thirds of the left kidney, followed by the removal of the entire right kidney one week later. The …
