With Or Without You: The Impact Of Partner Presence And Attachment On Exploration, Anthony Coy Apr 2010

With Or Without You: The Impact Of Partner Presence And Attachment On Exploration, Anthony Coy

Theses and Dissertations

Expanding upon past research demonstrating that attachment orientation influences adult exploration, this thesis examined the impact of both actor and partner attachment anxiety and avoidance as well as real or imagined partner presence on outcomes of exploratory behavior (study 1a) and the desire to explore (study 1b). Eighty six couples were randomly assigned to explore (i.e., a meditation activity) with or without their partner in the lab, and to imagine exploring with or without their partner when rating their desire to complete potential exploratory behaviors. The effects of actor anxiety and avoidance on exploration were moderated by partner presence for …

Perifosine, A Novel Akt Inhibitor Induces Apoptosis, Cell Cycle Arrest And Has A Chemo-Sensitizing Effect In Medulloblastoma Cell Lines, Anil Kumar

Theses and Dissertations

Primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the most common solid tumors found in children. While surgery and radiotherapy still remain the standard treatment modalities in pediatric brain tumors, chemotherapy also has an important part in the management of these tumors. However, most of the available chemotherapeutic drugs have suboptimal effectiveness. Deregulation of various pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic pathways has been cited as a major mechanism underlying this drug resistance. The role of various serine threonine kinases, including Akt kinases, in promoting drug resistance is being extensively studied in various cancers. A complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie drug …

Differences In Peer Perception Of Alcohol Use, Personal Alcohol Use, And Levels Of Intoxication Among Students At Virginia Commonwealth University From 2002 To 2004., William Evans

Theses and Dissertations

This study involves the examination of National Collegiate Health Assessment (NCHA) data collected by the VCU Wellness Resource Center. This study will compare trends in college student health behavior perceptions and personal activity regarding alcohol use, as self-reported via the NCHA data, with a particular focus on a comparison between 2002, which is the year that the Wellness Resource Center (then known as the Office of Health Promotion) first implemented an alcohol education campaign based upon a “social norms” theoretical framework, and 2004, after 18 months of intensive campaigning. Thus, the aim of the project is to examine the changes …

The Influences Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Expression On Glioblastoma Pathology, Nicholas Pullen Mar 2010

The Influences Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Expression On Glioblastoma Pathology, Nicholas Pullen

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive central nervous system (CNS) cancer characterized by enhanced tumor cell motility, pernicious invasion into the normal brain, extensive tumor-induced angiogenesis, and adaptive resistance to current therapeutic paradigms. One of the difficulties associated with GBM is the ability of the tumor cells to infiltrate normal CNS tissue. Neurosurgeons can remove the primary tumor mass, but peripheral cells that are inaccessible will ultimately result in a secondary lesion that can lead to death. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are well known for their abilities to facilitate processes of cellular motility and invasion through their clearance of extracellular …

Electrodeposited Silica Thin Films, Debbie Campbell-Rance Mar 2010

Electrodeposited Silica Thin Films, Debbie Campbell-Rance

Theses and Dissertations

Sol-gel derived silica thin film synthesis has gained prominence because of the mild processing conditions and widespread understanding of the chemistry of the process. Traditionally, silicate films are prepared by spin- and dip-coating but these materials lack the desired porosity for sensing, separations and catalysis applications. Electrochemical deposition was proposed to improve the porosity of silicate films. The main aims of this work were threefold. First we wanted to elucidate what parameters influenced film formation during electrodeposition. Then we wanted to understand how these parameters affected the morphology of the materials prepared. These films were characterized by profilometry, AFM, and …

Size-Structured Competition And Predation In Red-Eyed Treefrog Tadpoles, Christopher Asquith Mar 2010

Size-Structured Competition And Predation In Red-Eyed Treefrog Tadpoles, Christopher Asquith

Theses and Dissertations

Body size is important in determining the outcome of competition and predator-prey interactions. Size structure of a population (i.e. relative proportion of large and small conspecifics) may be particularly important in organisms with prolonged breeding periods and rapid growth where populations may have multiple cohorts at different stages of development competing for one resource. Both the consumptive and nonconsumptive effects of predators can also be size-dependent and can alter competitive interactions. Here we study the importance of size structure in the Neotropical leaf-breeding tree frog, Agalychnis callidryas. This species is a prolonged breeder such that multiple overlapping cohorts of differing …

Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker Mar 2010

Hunger For Grace: The Association Between Eating Disorders And Religiousness, Janet Lydecker

Theses and Dissertations

Religiousness is one potential, understudied psychosocial correlate of eating disorders. To assess associations between religiousness and eating disorders, this study developed the Religious Attendance and Belief Scale (Rel-AB), and examined its psychometric properties. Women from a large population-based sample (N = 1510; M(age) = 42.5) completed subscales measuring (1) belief in a personal and loving God, and (2) attendance at religion-related activities, as well as eating disorder measures. Belief was negatively associated with eating disorder symptomatology among women meeting broadly defined criteria for bulimia nervosa. Eating disorders and religiousness were not associated in the overall sample, and associations were largely …

Topological Properties Of A Network Of Spiking Neurons In Face Image Recognition, Joo-Heon Shin Mar 2010

Topological Properties Of A Network Of Spiking Neurons In Face Image Recognition, Joo-Heon Shin

Theses and Dissertations

We introduce a novel system for recognition of partially occluded and rotated images. The system is based on a hierarchical network of integrate-and-fire spiking neurons with random synaptic connections and a novel organization process. The network generates integrated output sequences that are used for image classification. The network performed satisfactorily given appropriate topology, i.e. the number of neurons and synaptic connections, which corresponded to the size of input images. Comparison of Synaptic Plasticity Activity Rule (SAPR) and Spike Timing Dependant Plasticity (STDP) rules, used to update connections between the neurons, indicated that the SAPR gave better results and thus was …

Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry For The Characterization Of Covalent And Noncovalent Polynuclear Platinum Compounds Interacting With Bio-Molecules, John Mangrum Mar 2010

Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry For The Characterization Of Covalent And Noncovalent Polynuclear Platinum Compounds Interacting With Bio-Molecules, John Mangrum

Theses and Dissertations

Polynuclear platinum compounds represent a new class of potential platinum anticancer therapeutics. Derived from the most widely used platinum anticancer drug, cisplatin, these novel compounds are distinct in their interactions with bio-molecules. The effectiveness of platinum anticancer agents is influenced by three pharmacological factors: (i) their resistance to deactivating sulfur nucleophiles, (ii) the ability to gain cellular entry and efficient cellular uptake, and (iii) the ability to form stable and specific complexes with DNA. BBR 3464, the first multinuclear platinum compound to reach phase II clinical trials, has created a new approach to cancer drug design. Large, highly charged platinum …

In My Busby Berkeley Dreams, Michael Pierce Mar 2010

In My Busby Berkeley Dreams, Michael Pierce

Theses and Dissertations

I use high- and low-tech approaches in my drawings and bookart to address issues of sexual identity and beauty. My work emphasizes process, content, and image. I create pictures using tightly cropped symbolic figurative imagery. I also leave smudges, smears, and traces of what happened in the making of the work to make process more visible. In my work I would like you to consider what you see and what you don’t see, to smile in recognition of something you might never have really thought about before. And when I really get it right, you might even question your own …

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches For The Analysis Of Multiple Endpoints Data Resulting From Exposure To Multiple Health Stressors., Epiphanie Nyirabahizi Mar 2010

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches For The Analysis Of Multiple Endpoints Data Resulting From Exposure To Multiple Health Stressors., Epiphanie Nyirabahizi

Theses and Dissertations

In risk analysis, Benchmark dose (BMD)methodology is used to quantify the risk associated with exposure to stressors such as environmental chemicals. It consists of fitting a mathematical model to the exposure data and the BMD is the dose expected to result in a pre-specified response or benchmark response (BMR). Most available exposure data are from single chemical exposure, but living objects are exposed to multiple sources of hazards. Furthermore, in some studies, researchers may observe multiple endpoints on one subject. Statistical approaches to address multiple endpoints problem can be partitioned into a dimension reduction group and a dimension preservative group. …

Role Of Jak/Stat Pathway In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Qifang Zhang Feb 2010

Role Of Jak/Stat Pathway In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Qifang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The Jak/Stat signaling cascade mediates cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, apoptosis and immune responses. Aberrant activation of this pathway mediates neoplastic transformation and abnormal growth of many malignancies including breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women in United States. The mechanism by which the Jak/Stat pathway modulates the pathogenesis of breast cancer is unclear. This dissertation elucidates roles of Jak/Stat members that mediate the pathogenesis of breast cancer. For these studies, we used 4T1 mouse mammary tumor cells as a model which mimics human breast cancer. First, we investigated the …

Extracellular Matrix Based Substrates For Propagation Of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Sheena Abraham Feb 2010

Extracellular Matrix Based Substrates For Propagation Of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Sheena Abraham

Theses and Dissertations

In human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) research and applications, the need for a culture system devoid of non-human components is crucial. Such a system should exhibit characteristics observed in conventional culture systems that have used mouse embryonic fibroblast feeders for hPSC self renewal without the requirement of excessive supplementation with growth factors. To achieve this, we focused on the identification and characterization of extracellular matrix (ECM) substrates for hPSC propagation. ECM substrates derived from mouse and human fibroblasts were assessed for their ability to support self-renewal of hPSCs. Characterization of hPSCs on ECM-based substrates demonstrated maintenance of pluripotent characteristics based …

Recapitulating Osteoblastogenesis With Electrospun Fibrinogen Nanofibers And Adipose Stem Cells And Electrospinning Adipose Tissue-Derived Basement Membrane, Michael Francis Feb 2010

Recapitulating Osteoblastogenesis With Electrospun Fibrinogen Nanofibers And Adipose Stem Cells And Electrospinning Adipose Tissue-Derived Basement Membrane, Michael Francis

Theses and Dissertations

To repair, replace, or regenerate damaged or diseased tissue has been a long-standing, albeit elusive, goal in medical research. Here, we characterize patient-derivable mesenchymal stem cell types, termed adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). These cells, which can be derived from liposuction fat and lipoaspirate saline, are sources for patient-derivable extracellular matrix (ECM), fibrinogen (Fg) and adipose tissue extracellular matrix, and may prove useful for synthesizing new bone tissue analogues in vitro. Traditionally and rapidly isolated ASCs were thoroughly characterized as multipotent, having osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation potential, and they exhibited comparable proliferative lifespans. These ASCs also shared an indistinguishable immunophenotype …

Regulation Of Telomerase Expression In Stem Cell Reprogramming, Patrick Sachs Jan 2010

Regulation Of Telomerase Expression In Stem Cell Reprogramming, Patrick Sachs

Theses and Dissertations

A great need exists for an abundant, easily accessible source of patient-specific cells that will function for use in regenerative medicine. One promising source is the adult stem cell derived from adipose tissue (ASCs). Isolated from waste lipoaspiration, these cells could serve as a readily available source for the regeneration of damaged tissues. To further define the biology of ASCs, we have isolated multiple cell strains from different adipose tissue sources, indicating wide-spread distribution in the body. We find that a widely used set of cell surface markers fail to distinguish ASCs from normal fibroblasts. However, our ASC isolations are …

The Effect Of Implicit Stereotypes On The Physical Performance In Older Adults, Gabriele R. Moriello Jan 2010

The Effect Of Implicit Stereotypes On The Physical Performance In Older Adults, Gabriele R. Moriello

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore how stereotypes affect physical performance in older adults. A multigroup pretest post test design was utilized to determine whether implicit activation of positive or negative stereotypes has an effect on physical performance. Ninety six community dwelling older adults 65 years of age or older were included in the sample. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: exposure to positive stereotypes of aging, exposure to negative stereotypes of aging, or a control condition. In order to simulate how older adults are exposed to stereotypes in real world settings, participants were primed …

Features Of Recent Codon Evolution: A Comparative Polymorphism-Fixation Study, Zhongming Zhao, Cizhong Jiang Jan 2010

Features Of Recent Codon Evolution: A Comparative Polymorphism-Fixation Study, Zhongming Zhao, Cizhong Jiang

Psychiatry Publications

Features of amino-acid and codon changes can provide us important insights on protein evolution. So far, investigators have often examined mutation patterns at either interspecies fixed substitution or intraspecies nucleotide polymorphism level, but not both. Here, we performed a unique analysis of a combined set of intra-species polymorphisms and inter-species substitutions in human codons. Strong difference in mutational pattern was found at codon positions 1, 2, and 3 between the polymorphism and fixation data. Fixation had strong bias towards increasing the rarest codons but decreasing the most frequently used codons, suggesting that codon equilibrium has not been reached yet. We …

Schizophrenia Gene Networks And Pathways And Their Applications For Novel Candidate Gene Selection, Jingchun Sun, Peilin Jia, Ayman H. Fanous, Edwin Van Den Oord, Xiangning Chen, Brien P. Riley, Richard L. Amdur, Kenneth S. Kendler, Zhongming Zhao

Psychiatry Publications

Background

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a heritable, complex mental disorder. We have seen limited success in finding causal genes for schizophrenia from numerous conventional studies. Protein interaction network and pathway-based analysis may provide us an alternative and effective approach to investigating the molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We selected a list of schizophrenia candidate genes (SZGenes) using a multi-dimensional evidence-based approach. The global network properties of proteins encoded by these SZGenes were explored in the context of the human protein interactome while local network properties were investigated by comparing SZ-specific and cancer-specific networks that were extracted from the human interactome. …
