Overexpression Of Wnt7a Enhances Radiosensitivity Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Via The Wnt/Jnk Pathway, Loan Quynh Tran

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

Wnt7a serves an important role in slowing down the growth of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, little is known about the effect(s) of Wnt7a on the sensitivity of NSCLC to radiation. In the study, NSCLC cell proliferation and apoptosis in response to Wnt7a overexpression and/or radiation as one combination were determined by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tertazolium bromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The western blot technique was used to further examine the activation of Wnt/cJun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathways in NSCLC cell lines H1650 and A549.

Introduction: Interpretations of patient-reported outcome measures following knee arthroplasty lack context and typically do not account for costs, risks and benefits compared to an alternative treatment. The primary purpose of our paper is to estimate expectations patients have for pain and function destination outcome, six-months following surgery relative to the outcome expected if knee arthroplasty was not done. Secondary purposes were to determine if statistically significant changes in the smallest worthwhile six-month outcome occurred following an interactive discussion and to assess the construct validity of the expected six-month outcome obtained at baseline.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure pollinator abundance and diversity across Virginia Commonwealth University’s Monroe Park Campus in Richmond, Virginia, especially focusing on the impact of campus plantings on pollinators.

Methods

18 transects across VCU’s Monroe Park Campus, as well as 2 at the nearby Amelia Street School native meadow planting, were established and stratified by planting composition (native/invasive) and species diversity. Each transect was inventoried every other week for pollinators from April through July of 2023. Nonparametric and median-based linear models were used to test differences in pollinator abundance and morphospecies diversity across planting types.

Introduction: Faculty face numerous pressures as they decide whether to publish articles open access (OA). This pilot study investigated the extent to which School of Education faculty members’ engagement with OA was influenced by promotion and tenure (P&T) and how this influence related to other intrinsic, extrinsic, and contextual factors. Methods: This exploratory, sequential, mixed-method study adapted Social Exchange Theory to understand faculty engagement with OA article publication. The study used a quantitative survey followed by qualitative interviews and focus groups.

Results: Participants reported that P&T had substantive influence over faculty practices regarding OA. Con- nected factors included beliefs about …

Utility-scale solar energy is the fastest-growing source of energy in the United States, and it provides many benefits related to climate change mitigation, pollution reduction, and tax revenue for the impacted localities. However, the rapid expansion of this technology raises some concerns, including the possible loss of farmland, forest land, and sensitive ecosystems, as well as potential environmental justice impacts from concentrating these facilities in low-income and/or minority communities.

Interactions of intense ultrashort laser pulses with liquid media and at solid-liquid interfaces produce plasmas with high densities of reactive chemical species that promote the formation of nanomaterials. This work discusses the current understanding of laser-induced chemical reactions in aqueous medium involving hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals, and the effects of chemical additives on these reactions. Two chemical strategies are presented for controlling the composition of the laser-induced plasma and nanomaterial properties. Natural and nature-based features have been implemented throughout New York City to provide habitat and reduce flooding, erosion, and pollution. The West Pond Living Shoreline in Jamaica Bay, NY was designed with organic breakwaters and native marsh plants, including S. alterniflora. Post-construction monitoring in 2021 found that percent coverage of S. alterniflora was lower than expected. To inform future management, we studied the effect of elevation, planting method, and shoreline energy exposure on the percent cover, average stem height, and average stem density of S. alterniflora. Although the length and constituting sequences for pericentromeric repeats are highly variable across eukaryotes, the presence of multiple pericentromeric repeats is one of the conserved features of the eukaryotic chromosomes. Pericentromeric heterochromatin is often misregulated in human diseases, with the expansion of pericentromeric repeats in human solid cancers. In this article, we have developed a mathematical model of the RNAi-dependent methylation of H3K9 in the pericentromeric region of fission yeast. Our model, which takes copy number as an explicit parameter, predicts that the pericentromere is silenced only if there are many copies of repeats. It becomes bistable or desilenced if …

Ketamine has been shown to produce analgesia in various acute and chronic pain states; however, abuse liability concerns have limited its utility. The ketamine metabolite (2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) has been shown to produce antidepressant-like effects similar to ketamine without abuse liability concerns. (2R,6R)-HNK produces sustained analgesia in models of chronic pain, but has yet to be evaluated in models of acute pain. This presentation focuses on the development of the Small Airway-on-a-Chip, a microfluidic device meant to serve as a more accurate, human-relevant research model for lung inflammation-focused pharmaceutical testing, as described in Small Airway-on-a-Chip Enables Analysis of Human Lung Inflammation and Drug Responses in Vitro by Benam et al. Currently, there is no way to study organ-level complexities of human lung inflammation outside of the clinical setting.
