We must definitively respond to the questions of why we spend all that time, effort, and money teaching art.

Considering the number of writers in exile, one may at first find those still living in South Africa suspect but, although the murderous violence familiar to newspaper readers is absent, there is still pain enough. For those unfamiliar with past or current events, fiction here is history as well as art.

Published originally by the Pan American Institute of History and Geography in 1956 and recently reprinted in paperback by Howard Press, A Study on the Historiography of the British West Indies discusses almost seventy-five, often multi-volume works published between 1530 and 1898. This material includes works published in English, French, Spanish and Dutch. As the author points out, many of these volumes were originally composed by gifted amateurs who wrote with polemical purposes. This volume is the long-awaited supplement to Francis Paul Prucha's Bibliographical Guide to the History of Indian-White Relations in the United States, published by the University of Chicago Press in 1977. That work, which contained 9705 items, was complete to 1975. The supplement, with 3400 titles, covers the historical literature made available between 1975 and 1980. Organized into fifteen subject divisions and excellently cross-referenced with a thirty-six page index, the supplement continues the same high quality of Prucha's previous efforts to bring some useable order to the bewildering complexity of American Indian historiography.

These concerns are important for both the American Indian and non-Indian communities to understand and address.

Perhaps the most valuable contribution that Professors Bataille's and Silet’s treatise makes is to connect the images of the American Indian in movies with antecedent images. The scope of their investigation predates Columbus, includes critical American historical imagery production, takes the reader to the very beginnings of the movie industry, and brings us up-to-date on the effects of the "Great Society" outfalls for both image. and employment of American Indians in the screen entertainment establishment.

Educating Artistic Vision is an "old" book written a decade ago. As such there are many aspects in it, I'm sure, Eisner would not accept today. Therefore, the critique is made by keeping his later works, particularly The Educational Imagination (1979), in mind. To begin, Eisner claims that there are two major justifications for the teaching of art, both of which he presents in an either/or fashion. First a contextualist justification is made by claiming that art satisfies social needs. Joy Hendry uses a social anthropological examination of one community, the village of Kurotsuchi on southerly Kyushu Island, to illuminate the pivotal role of marriage in Japanese society. Marriage from pre-Meiji times to the present, she points out, has been crucial to the continuation of the ie, that union of the genealogical family and household/property. Marriage establishes the house head as an integral member of the village associations for governance, tax collection, care of the shrines, road building, and mutual aid. Moreover, it brings together Shintoism and Buddhism in a harmonious blending of rituals concerning birth and death.

During 1970 and 1973, University of Maryland professor of psychiatry Virginia Huffer spent some time with the women of the Lardil and Kaiadilt tribes who live on Mornington Island in northern Australia's Gulf of Carpenteria [Carpentaria]. Forced to accommodate increasingly to Western ways, these women struggle to maintain traditional linkages while they undergo modern change. McCunn, an Amerasian born in San Francisco's Chinatown, grew up in Hong Kong. While art curricula are not without reference to twentieth century fine art, the social significance of modern fine art has been a neglected area of study. The purpose of this paper is to survey and review the model characteristics of modern society and modern fine art. Striking similarities are revealed in such a review which strongly suggest that a study of modern fine art in art education could serve to problematize both the social origins of modern fine art and the values of Western modernity.

Increased retention of minority undergraduates is a goal that can be supported for a variety of reasons, from the avoidance of human waste, to concern for balanced institutional budgets, to the desirability of turning out larger numbers of minority graduates who will become professional role models for the next generation. The authors have presented a state·of·the·art review of some promising retention programs, together with recommendations for strengthening such programs.

Jenkins' and Terrell's assessment of factors contributing to the attrition of undergraduate minority students is written in such general terms that it does not make a clear statement of the problem. Further, while their use of Kathleen Burlew's study may have provided some specific insights, to say out of context that "since students may lose interest in educational goals, an occupational end is needed to sustain their motivation to continue" comes perilously close to a rationale for consigning minority students to vocational programs.

This article is concerned with the retention of minority undergraduate students, offering recommendations which contribute to a higher rate of student retention in postsecondary institutions. The first section provides a brief introduction to the state-of-the-art concerning attrition and retention. The development of a retention program for minority students comprises the second, more comprehensive section. It provides a listing of resources concerned with the problem. Concluding recommendations are presented which can contribute to the successful retention of minority students.
