Hold The Pickles, Hold The Lettuce, Special Orders Do Upset Us: The Franchise System In American Art Education, Tom Anderson
Hold The Pickles, Hold The Lettuce, Special Orders Do Upset Us: The Franchise System In American Art Education, Tom Anderson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I have a history of advocating locally specific art content as very important to the construction of art curricula. This position arises from my readings in the area of socially contextual aesthetics. By art content I mean not only thematic content but also formal qualities, media, and technical execution all of which contribute to an artwork's style. By locally specific art content I mean the style of the work as it arises from a specific place at a specific time, and which in some way reflects the collective consciousness of the culture or subculture of the work's genesis. If one …

The Journal Of Social Theory In Art Education
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The membership of The Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education has identified the need to raise questions about issues that affect the teaching of art from a critical knowledge of its social ramifications. The papers in BULLETIN NUMBER FIVE acknowledge the importance of looking at art teachers, looking at ourselves, to gain perspective on the art education process as a socially relevant experience.
Thought On Social Contextualism In Art And Art Education, Tom Anderson
Thought On Social Contextualism In Art And Art Education, Tom Anderson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Art as a manifestation and reflect ion of culture has been clearly established. Discussions of various depth on the subject are available in many general art education texts. However, the concept of art as a reflection of culture may take many forms and thus has the potential for ambiguity. Culture, as defined by the social sciences, is the complex of knowledge, beliefs, mores, customs, laws, and social institutions held by human beings as a part of society. Culture, in this sense, does not refer to what is commonly known as high culture, except as high culture is included in the …
Playing In Public Or Creatively Expressing The Aesthetic Dimension In Social Life, Duke Madenfort
Playing In Public Or Creatively Expressing The Aesthetic Dimension In Social Life, Duke Madenfort
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This philosophical study is in part a critical examination of Richard Sennett's sociological account of what it means to be out in public in the company of strangers and expressing oneself aesthetically in a playful, self-distanced encounter with them. His urging for a rediscovery of the classic mid-eighteenth century connection between actors on the stage and persons on the street in order to make social life aesthetic once again is seen as having significant implications for art educators concerned with putting into practice the aesthetic and social function of art and art education. The arguments developed in the paper take …
Dignity: A Psychological Construct, Walter Watson Tunstall
Dignity: A Psychological Construct, Walter Watson Tunstall
Theses and Dissertations
A theory was presented which argued that dignity or a personal sense of worth is a distinct dimension of the self concept, and it can be distinguished from self-esteem, a related but different dimension of the self-structure. The theory presented an explanation for how a personal sense of worth originates, and why individuals may differ on the degree to which they feel worthy. An internally consistant, alpha= .85, temporally stable, r = .64, 25 item self-report measure of individual differences in dignity, defined as a social process of mutual and reciprocal validation between interactants, was constructed. The Personal Worth Inventory …
Vcu Today (1984-11-21)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Critique [Of Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s By Linda M.C. Abbott], Cecilia E. Dawkins
Critique [Of Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s By Linda M.C. Abbott], Cecilia E. Dawkins
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Abbott's presentation should be of critical concern for educators and practitioners who prepare others to deliver psychological services to ethnic minority clients. A strong point of the article is the description of a serious problem in many educational programs which fail to adequately prepare psychologists to work among a variety of ethnic groups. Equally significant, the author provides pragmatic recommendations and strategies for addressing the concerns which emerge from a theoretical framework.
Critique [Of Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry By Silvester J. Brito], Juanita Palmerhall
Critique [Of Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry By Silvester J. Brito], Juanita Palmerhall
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The author of "Change in American Indian World Views ..." is not only a teacher and student of poetry, but is also a poet who writes about his heritage. It is appropriate that he chose to compare traditional songs and the contemporary pleas of American Indians. A poet can be and is described as "one who is especially gifted in the perception and expression of the beautiful or lyrical." Poetry is the art or work of a poet. If we follow these views of poet and poetry, then we would have to place both of the categories of which the …
[Review Of] Signe Hammer. Daugh Ters And Mothers: Mothers And Daughters, Linda M. C. Abbott
[Review Of] Signe Hammer. Daugh Ters And Mothers: Mothers And Daughters, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Poet, actress, and author ( Women: Body and Culture), Signe Hammer here attempts an exploration of the complex bonds and strains between women, their daughters, and their mothers. While it is written for a popular audience, the book's credibility is strengthened by the inclusion of scholarly chapter notes following the final chapter.

[Review Of] John E. Farley. Majority-Minority Relations, Homer D. C. Garcia
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
John E. Farley, who is on the faculty of Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville), says that he has written this book because he is concerned about the deteriorating status of minorities and intergroup relations in the United States. His main objective is to increase awareness of these issues among college students in race relations classes by not only describing but also analyzing and attempting to explain the problems which our society faces.
[Review Of] Susan Schaefer Davis. Patience And Power, Women's Lives In A Moroccan Village, Edith Blicksilver
[Review Of] Susan Schaefer Davis. Patience And Power, Women's Lives In A Moroccan Village, Edith Blicksilver
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
For most Americans, Morocco calls to mind nomadic Berber horsemen, sinister spies in dimly-lit Casbah cafes, the armed intervention of marines in 1801 to subdue marauding pirates. Certainly, except for exotic stereotypical cabaret singers, Moroccan women have played no role in the Hollywood versions of what village life is like in this small, mountainous North African country whose history was shaped by such diverse groups as Arabs, Moors, Frenchmen and Spaniards. Anthropologist Susan Schaefer Davis at Trenton State University has described women's lives in a specific Moroccan village in her skillfully constructed exploration of lifestyle experiences in a collection of …
[Review Of] Ellen Matthews. Culture Clash, Robert Warshawsky
[Review Of] Ellen Matthews. Culture Clash, Robert Warshawsky
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
One tragedy of war is a people uprooted-tom from their land, history, and culture to seek a haven in a foreign country. Culture Clash is such a story. Ellen Matthews describes a Vietnamese family's struggle to adapt to American culture and yet retain their autonomy and self-respect. As a freelance writer and sponsor of Quang and his family, the author is well qualified to write this unpretentious account of their mutual experience. Composed from a diary the author kept between 1975-1979, the text is a detailed subjective study of the day-to-day events and conflicts between herself and the Quang family.
White Like Me: A Problem Or Plus, Ann Irwin
White Like Me: A Problem Or Plus, Ann Irwin
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In a tiny Iowa rural community, stuck like a mud dauber's nest on the banks of the Little Sioux River, a WASP was born and brought up thinking everyone in the world was just like her. As she went on to be educated, she was told she was the product of a culturally deprived childhood. Everyone was not like her. Didn't she know people were different? Didn't she know there were minorities in the world?
Critique [Of Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry By Silvester J. Brito], Margaret Bedrosian
Critique [Of Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry By Silvester J. Brito], Margaret Bedrosian
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Brito's article draws a necessary contrast between the purpose and function of American Indian chants, and the American Indian's descent into modern poetry. The latter is an idiom that can only voice anger and frustration: it symbolizes a spirit imprisoned, forced to protest through a borrowed medium because it seems to be the only one that the western mind can understand.
Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Ernest Champion
Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Ernest Champion
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Kristin Herzog's journey into the past is a necessary journey for serious students of ethnic and American studies; she establishes the relevance and validity of oral literature which has been relegated to an inferior status by scholars in the western world. The attempt to impose an inferior status on oral literature is rather sinister when one considers the absence of a written literature has been taken to mean an absence of intellectual activity on the part of such people. Not only American Indians but also Africans have suffered a great deal because of the tendency to regard such people as …
