Autoerthrocyte Sensitization Or Psychogenic Purpura?, Thomas G. Smith Jan 1971

Autoerthrocyte Sensitization Or Psychogenic Purpura?, Thomas G. Smith

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The following report describes the occurrence, in four women, of an abnormal response to bruising, characterized by local pain, swelling, and extension of bleeding into adjacent areas, often to a serious extent. The histories and laboratory investigations suggest that, in these patients, there has occurred a sensitization against one of their own body tissues, namely red blood cells.

The Adolescent And Competitive Athletics, Isao Hirata Jr. Jan 1971

The Adolescent And Competitive Athletics, Isao Hirata Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

An attempt has been made to view the adolescent in organized athletics--sympathetically and understandingly. In doing so, an admittedly-biased vantage point has been selected-the better to evaluate the philosophical desirability of competition, as of itself, and, secondary thereto, the positive or negative value of organized competitive athletics. Since, philosophy or no, athletic programs have long been established in almost every conceivable sport and in almost every age group from grade-school onwards, a pattern of organized medical care to cope with this established need has been advocated, much as it already exists in most colleges, large and small. Based on experience …

Current Trends In College Health Medicine, Philip B. Chase Jan 1971

Current Trends In College Health Medicine, Philip B. Chase

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All the complex factors which are bringing about changes in college education--economic, social, political, and cultural--are profoundly affecting college health medicine. These changes are occurring with unusual rapidity, and are certainly causing strains to the old establishment thought to be so secure and unassailable a few years ago. However, in the new trends--student participation in the work of the Health Service, expansion of the work of the Health Service to include the entire college community, and the coming age of the Mental Health Program--we recognize new and more effective ways to deliver health care to our college youth and their …

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton Jan 1971

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The approach to total patient care in a teenager with malignant disease represents one of the greatest challenges to any physician. To bridge the generation gap and communicate in an area of medicine where we cannot always cure, but often only palliate, guide, comfort and listen, is often difficult for we physicians who are so often taught only how to win therapeutic battles. Malignancy is the leading medical cause of death in the 10-21 year age group in the United States. Leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, bone and brain tumors are the most commonly encountered forms of cancer during this period (Heald, …

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage Jan 1971

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage

Theses and Dissertations

The problem to be investigated is: What are the emotional needs of patients, who are approaching death, as revealed by the patients themselves? The review of literature pointed out that almost all the data published about the dying patient were the thoughts of those around him rather than his own thoughts. Since the patient is our concern, it would seem logical to ask him what his needs are.

Nurses recognize as one of their responsibilities of assisting a patient toward a peaceful death when curative goals are beyond grasp. If the patient dies and his needs are not met, or …

Differential Effects Of Reward And Punishment On Subsequent Altruistic Behavior, Sharon Browning Jan 1971

Differential Effects Of Reward And Punishment On Subsequent Altruistic Behavior, Sharon Browning

Theses and Dissertations

In today's complex society, no one can be independent and survive; people must help others. There appear to be limits on help giving or at least some conditions under which help is not given. For example, why did thirty-eight people stand silently and watch Kitty Genovese being murdered without one person calling the police or offering any assistance? In addition to making people more interdependent, our rapidly expanding technological society may also account for increased im-personalization and accompanying apathy and alienation. However, the research which has been done in the area of altruism or helping behavior seems to indicate that …
