Some Psychological Aspects Of Dealing With Cancer, Joel J. Silverman
Some Psychological Aspects Of Dealing With Cancer, Joel J. Silverman
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Cancer has a potentially profound affect upon the emotional and physical life of the patient and his or her family. For most people the word “cancer” has a fearsome connotation. This discussion explores the areas of self-image, body-image, and personal relationships that are often altered in cancer patients, as well as the emotional and cognitive states which can result from malignancy and its treatment. We will also review some techniques for helping the patient. It is important to remember that the psychological responses to any illness are individual and largely determined by the patient’s past experience, psychological strengths, weaknesses and …

Urinary Incontinence In Women, J. Andrew Fantl
Urinary Incontinence In Women, J. Andrew Fantl
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The adult bladder and urethra acting as a unit allow for the voluntary dual function of urine collection and evacuation. Urinary continence is an acquired, “learned” state, and normal anatomy and function of the nervous and genitourinary systems are necessary to maintain it. Urinary incontinence is defined as “a condition where involuntary loss of urine is a social or hygienic problem and is objectively demonstrable.” This definition takes into account both sociocultural aspects and the need for objective clinical assessment of urinary leakage. Marked individual variations in physical activity, occupation and hygienic standards call for appropriate clinical judgment when evaluation …

Contemporary Sociological Theory And The Study Of Art Education, Nancy R. Johnson
Contemporary Sociological Theory And The Study Of Art Education, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
These contemporary theories in sociology could be useful in the study of art education. All of them focus upon meanings, interpretations, social context, beliefs, and interaction. What is significant is how people describe life in the world. They also describe human beings as persons who have personalities that are unique and which are not entirely manifestations of physiological processes. Human beings are seen as initiators of action and as creative agents. These premises about human beings seem to me to be ones that validate art.
The Effect Of Three Different Types Of Feedback On The Amount Of Force Generated During Isometric Contraction Of The Triceps Brachii Muscle, Cindy I. Buchanan
The Effect Of Three Different Types Of Feedback On The Amount Of Force Generated During Isometric Contraction Of The Triceps Brachii Muscle, Cindy I. Buchanan
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken in order to investigate the effect of different feedback variables on isometric strength performance. The variables studied were auditory EMG biofeedback, knowledge of results, and verbal cues.
Nineteen normal adult women volunteered as subjects for the study. Each subject performed nine isometric contractions of the triceps brachii muscle against the resistance of a cable tensiometer. One of three different types of feedback was given during each contraction in order to motivate subjects to generate as much force as possible. Feedback variables were applied in random order; each variable was used three times. Peak force readings were …
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Duration Of Low Back Pain, Betty Sue Holliday Ashby
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Duration Of Low Back Pain, Betty Sue Holliday Ashby
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-esteem and duration of low back pain. Low back pain is one of the most common types of chronic pain. Sternbach et al. (1973) have estimated that the chief complaint of at least seventy percent of the patients presenting at the Pain Clinic associated with the School of Medicine of the University of California, San Diego is back pain. They feel that the major reason for this phenomena is the failure of physicians to recognize it as a psychosomatic illness. Erena (1978) concurs with this conclusion. He notes that …
Age Differences In Attributions Of Causality: Implications For Intellectual Assessment, Thomas R. Prohaska
Age Differences In Attributions Of Causality: Implications For Intellectual Assessment, Thomas R. Prohaska
Theses and Dissertations
The present investigation was designed to test the hypothesis that failure experienced by the individual in a testing situation is moderated by causal attributions and these attributions influence subsequent test measures. The effect of manipulating cause (lack of effort or Lack of ability) to response-independent failure and its relationship to scores on the Reasoning, Hidden Patterns, and Paper Folding Test, in younger an older person's was investigated. The same measures were assessed in a group that experienced the same response-independent-failure but with no explanation offered as to the cause for the failure, a group that was not given any information …
Comparison Of Burned Patients' Perception Of Pain With Nurses' Perception Of Patients' Pain, Merri Diane Walkenstein
Comparison Of Burned Patients' Perception Of Pain With Nurses' Perception Of Patients' Pain, Merri Diane Walkenstein
Theses and Dissertations
Pain is a universal experience. Caring for people in pain is a central aspect of nursing practice. Many studies have been done to determine the physical and psychosocial mechanisms of the pain sensation, in addition to methods of relief. Very little has been done, however, dealing specifically with the pain experienced by the burned patient.
People hospitalized with thermal injuries complain most often of the intensity and long duration of their pain experience. Due to the large number of persons sustaining thermal injuries every year, it is apparent that nurses must familiarize themselves with methods of evaluation and intervention to …
Personality Correlates Of Musical Talent, Walter W. Tunstall
Personality Correlates Of Musical Talent, Walter W. Tunstall
Theses and Dissertations
Existing commentary and research on the nature of musical talent was reviewed and found lacking in conception, primarily because previous researchers had failed to identify the unique creative element a musician contributes to a musical performance. The personality structures of 60 subjects, 32 males and 28 females, were analyzed via the 16PF. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation, an ANOVA, and a second order factor analysis were used to assess the relationship between personality and musical talent for 1) persons with little or no musical ability, 2) highly talented university music majors, and 3) professional performing musicians. Significant relationships were found …
Loneliness: A Study Of Adult Clinic Patients With Metastatic Cancer, Katherine Norfleet Berry
Loneliness: A Study Of Adult Clinic Patients With Metastatic Cancer, Katherine Norfleet Berry
Theses and Dissertations
Loneliness is a topic of growing concern in the literature. Despite inherent difficulties in measuring such a personal experience, the present study was undertaken in order to gain knowledge concerning emotional needs of the dying cancer patient.
The conceptual frameworks for loneliness of Francis and Brown were combined and added to Bowen’s theory of “family reaction to death” to formulate the framework for this research. The relationship of secondary loneliness among adult clinic patients with metastatic cancer, and openness of their relationship system with a significant other was explored using the structured interview method. The loneliness scale and relationship system …
Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato
Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
One priority of the Health Task group of the Conference on Pacific and Asian American Families (1978) was the need for research into the psychological and emotional problems of Pacific and Asian American (PAA) groups and their possible remedies. Specifically, the report identified the importance of shame in the education and socialization process of PAA families in controlling behavior. As a cultural characteristic among PAAs, shame or “saving face” remains an important concept to the individual, the family, the community, and to the racial group as a whole.

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 8th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
On November 10, 1939 at Benedict College, a black institution in Columbia, black South Carolinians met to organize a state unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Poeple [People] (NAACP). The main objective of the new organization, the South Carolina Conference of NAACP, was to create an effective instrument to be used for propaganda, fund-raising and litigation purposes, and to function as a united front in the struggle to reclaim the ballot. From the outset, the State Conference sought to create a mass-supported organization. Membership drives were initiated to enlarge the existing branches and to set up …
One Decade And The Politics Of Ethnic Studies: Focus For The Future, Charles C. Irby
One Decade And The Politics Of Ethnic Studies: Focus For The Future, Charles C. Irby
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The first decade of coloured ethnic studies has passed quietly. This uncelebrated passing is probably more related to what did not occur in conceptual, methodological, and theoretical developments during the ten-year period than what did, in fact, happen. The decade can be characterized as one in which the ethnic studies movement suffered from intellectual dropsy. The politics of ethnic studies are all of those activities which have served to restrict its development.
