[Review Of] Hubert M. Blalock, Jr., Race And Ethnic Relations, Hardy T. Frye
[Review Of] Hubert M. Blalock, Jr., Race And Ethnic Relations, Hardy T. Frye
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In the field of race relations, particularly in the United States, many scholars have turned their attention to the area of government policy and its implication for American racial relations.1 Race and Ethnic Relations by Blalock is concerned with this issue, but not exclusively. He makes the point that racial and ethnic conflict is not simply an American problem but indeed exists as a problem for most societies and emphasizes the desirability of comparative analysis whenever possible. Blalock also wants to rescue us from the naive assumption that it is possible to view race and ethnic relations in isolation.

[Review Of] Joseph Rothschild, Ethnopolitics, A Conceptual Framework, Alan Spector
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Whether ethnicity stems from certain intrinsic group characteristics or whether it is a definition conferred upon various groups because of their political, social, and economic environment has been a fundamental debate within the field of ethnic studies. Most students of ethnic studies would agree that ethnicity today embraces both factors, and more, that it is the result of the interactions between both sets of influences. How these factors interact in the political sphere is the core of Rothschild's ambitious new book.
Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I propose that there is a direct correlation between the precarious state of our cultural pattern and the role that artists and art educators assume in our society. I hope to demonstrate that the near fatal deficit of our culture is its undue esteem of individualism over the community--of private gain over the public good, and that the artist and art teacher reflect these same social values. I wish to demonstrate that artist need not assume the role of estranged other and fierce individualist in order to exercise their powers of imagination and craft, but may put these resources toward …
Critique [Of Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People], Anthony J. Cortese
Critique [Of Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People], Anthony J. Cortese
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Historically, scientific racism has provided reinforcement for maintaining the status quo. Researchers who sought to discover and explain racial difference in intelligence generally operated from a functionalist or social facts paradigm. Gilbert Gonzalez shows that “Racism was essentially an ideological explanation for the social structure, and did not affect the distribution of property, but rationalized that distribution.“ In sum, scientific racism indicated that the social structure was based on the genetic make-up of racial categories.
Some Developmental Components Of The Career Decision Making Process Among College Students, Glenn Thomas Gould
Some Developmental Components Of The Career Decision Making Process Among College Students, Glenn Thomas Gould
Theses and Dissertations
Current research suggests that there is some relationship between developmental variables, levels of career maturity and career decisions. In this study, the relationships between certain developmental factors and the degree of certainty expressed by college students about their decision to major in a field of study were explored. The variables included the student's decision making stage, decision making styles, levels of autonomy and interpersonal relationships, and degree of career maturity. The relationships between students' status as decided or undecided about a choice of major and the variables were also investigated. The participants of this study were 104 men (n=47) and …
Towards A Model For Considering The Social Functions Of Art, Ronald W. Neperud
Towards A Model For Considering The Social Functions Of Art, Ronald W. Neperud
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The purpose of this paper is to suggest development of a model for examining the social functions of art with the goal that art educators might better understand and value that dimension of human activity. In recent decades individuality, self-expression, and creativity have reigned supreme to the neglect of other dimensions of art important to human welfare--functions important to maintaining the group. The more recent valuing of art of the culturally diverse and the importance of art to groups such as Blacks, Chicanos, and the elderly, and others has suggested that art educators need to understand how art functions in …

Carl Jung: A Formalist Critique, Harold J. Mcwhinnie
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I will present a review of the basic thoughts of Carl Jung and outline his research in areas such as psychological types and the uses of symbols in art. Special attention will be placed on his discussions of Schiller's work on aesthetic play. His work on the psychological types will be related to research in art education with the Myers-Briggs tests. His work on symbols in art will be related to the new and growing interest of art education in the whole field of Creative Arts Therapy. Jung's influence on art education will be discussed within the historical and philosophical …
Critique [Of Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People], Olivia Mercado
Critique [Of Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People], Olivia Mercado
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Educational institutions are representative microcosms of the society. If the society segregates, exploits, and excludes racial groups, then it can be expected that educational institutions will follow suit. The intelligence testing of the 1920s and 1930s was an academic response to eugenics theories and to contemporary political-economic policies related to immigration, miscegenation, and segregation. As Gonzalez concludes, the creation of intelligence tests and their application were not only an apologia but also a means to maintain the status quo in the society.
Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People, Gilbert G. Gonzalez
Racial Intelligence Testing And The Mexican People, Gilbert G. Gonzalez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In the 1920s and 1930s the Mexican school age population increasingly participated in the educational system of the US. Meanwhile, many first experiences of these children with the state came in the form of educational research. The intelligence testing movement had a brief history before then, one which was gathering much momentum and greatly encouraged by corporate foundations and the cooperation of university administrations. The rapid immigration in the 1920s and settlement of Mexicans into colonias of the Southwest coincided with the rise of academic research and publications on racial intelligence as well as with the combination of mass compulsory …
Critique [Of Institutional Racism], Anthony J. Cortese
Critique [Of Institutional Racism], Anthony J. Cortese
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
As Deloria indicates in the opening lines of his essay, the dominant paradigm of racism in the 1960s reflected the popularly held belief that racism was an individual phenomena. Consequently. if racist individuals were confronted and curtailed or converted, the argument concluded, then discrimination would come to an end. However, history has shown us that we can have racist institutions without having racist individuals. For instance, our education institutions perpetuate racial, as well as sex, inequality. Yet it is possible for every member of such an institution to be non-racist, as well as non-sexist.

Some Symbols Of Identity Of Byzantine Catholics, Robert J. Skovira
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This essay is a description of some of an ethnic group’s symbols of identity”, its aim is to explore the meanings of the following statement: [Byzantine Catholics] are no longer an immigrant and ethnic group. Byzantine Catholics are American in every sense of the word, that the rite itself is American as opposed to foreign, and that both the rite and its adherents have become part and parcel of the American scene.”
The Influence Of Assertiveness Characteristics Of Raters On Perceived Assertiveness In Others, Elise Heffelfinger Labe Sloan
The Influence Of Assertiveness Characteristics Of Raters On Perceived Assertiveness In Others, Elise Heffelfinger Labe Sloan
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the perceptions of assertiveness, limited to the situation of ability to refuse requests, by assertive and nonassertive subjects as they rated assertive and nonassertive encoders. Gender differences were also assessed. Subjects were 40 Caucasion male and female undergraduate General Psychology students at a large urban university. Within each gender group there were 10 high-assertive and 10 low-assertive subjects as determined by their scores on the second part of the Conflict Resolution Inventory. The subjects rated videotaped assertive and unassertive encoders on an attractiveness scale, assertiveness scale, and on the Impact Message Inventory, (an interpersonal assessment instrument). …
Person-Environment Interaction In Nursing Homes For The Elderly, Stan J. Orchowsky
Person-Environment Interaction In Nursing Homes For The Elderly, Stan J. Orchowsky
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a growing interest in recent years in the study of person-environment interaction in the elderly. Several theoretical models have been proposed in the gerontological literature. Each of these models suffers from one or more limitations, including the restriction of requiring that the person and the environment be measured in the same terms, and the difficulty posed by attempting to empirically test the model.
A new model of person-environment interaction in the elderly is proposed here. The model views life satisfaction as the ultimate outcome variable. Feelings of personal control and choice are seen as intervening between life …
Vcu Today (1981-12-16)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
