The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan Jan 1984

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between social support and the blood pressure of mild and moderate hypertensives. Motivation for the study was derived from the growing realization that the social support of an individual has a far-reaching effect on illness and health and that little research has been done concerning the specific effect that social support has on blood pressure.

The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) was administered to a convenience sample of 30 subjects selected from among the hypertensive clients of the Family Practice Clinic and General Medical Clinic located in the Peninsula Health Center. The …

Interpersonal Perceptions As Function Of Personality Styles, Suzanne R. Gascoyne

Theses and Dissertations

One hundred, sixty-nine undergraduates participated in a study that investigated the effects of interpersonal self-perceptions on judgements made about others. Subjects' interpersonal styles were assessed by self-ratings using the Interpersonal Adjective Scales (IAS). Subjects also rated the interpersonal styles of two video-taped stimulus others using the IAS. In addition, subjects' degree of identification and desire to affiliate with the stimuli were assessed. The general design was a two-group rating comparison (Friendly-Dominant and Friendly-Submissive, and more extreme and less extreme) across two stimulus conditions, Hostile-Dominant and Hostile-Submissive. There were several findings and interpretations were forwarded. Extreme subjects assigned higher, more extreme …

The Nature Of Philosophical Criticism, Ann L. Sherman Jan 1984

The Nature Of Philosophical Criticism, Ann L. Sherman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Nielsen challenges philosophers to examine the nature of philosophy. He criticizes them for adhering to 'philosophy for philosophy's' sake and points out the non-neutrality of philosophy. Nielsen and other radical philosophers ask: In what sense are the concepts and distinctions which philosopher address 'ordinary'? What are the societal influences on the formation of their discourse? What are the societal consequences of their discourse? Can philosophy be conceived in such a way as to perform a critical service to society? and In what ways does or should philosophy interface with other disciplines?

The Relationship Between Oral Contraceptives And Intraepithelial Neoplasia Of The Uterine Cervix, Barbara Jeannette Fox

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between specific oral contraceptive use and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to determine if duration of use and content of oral contraceptives were related to CIN. Data was collected from 52 clinical records of clients who attended a colposcopy clinic during a four month period. Clients included in the study were utilizing one of five specific oral …

To accomplish this, subjects were selected and treatment effects evaluated on the basis of changes elicited in each of the three response modalities by a specific fear stimulus, The relative effectiveness of the external inhibition treatment in modifying the multiple components of the anxiety response was examined by a comparison with procedures controlling for expectancy effects and repeated exposure to the …
