Various Applications Of The Feldman Method, Jack Hobbs
Various Applications Of The Feldman Method, Jack Hobbs
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The way I see the Feldman Method is as a teaching technique and not as a research tool. The reason I even mention this is that apparently others use it as a research tool. I suppose it could be used that way, but I don't see it that way. I certainly agree, however, that art educators need to do a great deal of homework concerning society, sociology, and art history, especially those art educators who subscribe to the viewpoints of the Caucus - -I imagine many of you in here are sympathetic to the Caucus . We're certainly obligated to …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The inadequacy of writing on the sociology of art has been mentioned. We know the names of those who have taken a sociological approach--Frederick Antal, Arnold Hauser, Anthony Blunt, John Berger, and Tim Clark. Much of the sociology of art has been written by Marxists who have a political as well as a sociological axe to grind. Still, we in art education should be doing more sociological analysis, more work on the consumption of art --with art defined to include every type of man-made image. I fought for the admission of this Social Theory Caucus as an affiliated group of …
Professional Networking In Art Education, Karen A. Hamblen
Professional Networking In Art Education, Karen A. Hamblen
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The social scientist provides three levels of analysis whereby the sociology of art educators can be examined: (1) statistical information, (2) formal organizational structures, and (3) informal, life-world experiences. Although the first two levels provide valuable information, it is proposed that it is within informal, life-world experiences that professional networking occurs and where the character of much of the field of art education is shaped. In this descriptive and analytical study, the sociology of art educators is examined as a function of networks of power and influence. The discussion is limited to art educators with PhD or EdD degrees who …

Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies, John Hatfield
Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies, John Hatfield
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The question of identity is fundamental to human life. "Who am I," as a biological and psychological being; as a member of a human group with a particular style and history; as a participant in the common human values, perceptions, and processes which transcend any particular group? Ethnic studies should have as its focus the whole human being, articulated in the biological, socio/cultural, and psycho/personal categories, and the methodology for ethnic studies should reflect the process by which people live and move within the named categories. The interaction of people who are self-consciously engaged in exploring their lives biologically, culturally, …
Critique [Of Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students By Keith D. Parker], Homer D.C. Garcia
Critique [Of Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students By Keith D. Parker], Homer D.C. Garcia
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The article by Keith D. Parker raises interesting theoretical and methodological questions, but this review focuses on the latter. The author is correct in his critical assessment of black self-esteem research (BSER) methodology. Projective measures have been used in most cases and questions have been raised regarding the validity of such self-esteem measures and therefore about the believability of BSER findings.[1] In addition, blacks and whites tested have not been representative of the general black or white communities of the United States, yet inferences to and comparisons of the populations have been made. Finally, studies have employed non-multivariate statistical techniques …

Critique [Of Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White? By Robert A. Martinez], Terry Simmons
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
When the first Dutch missionaries reached the far shores of Java, they heard rumors of a recently captured large white monkey being held in a remote village. By the time the missionaries reached the village, however, the mysterious monkey had vanished. They found only the post where it had been tied. Chiseled in stone nearby in Latin, English and Dutch were these words: "Help! I am a Dutch sailor."

[Review Of] Keith A. Murray. The Modocs And Their War, Lyle Koehler
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In late 1872 and early 1873 the lava beds along northern California's Tule Lake became an arena of conflict between 160-odd Modoc Indians and a thousand U.S. soldiers, civilians, and their Warm Springs Apache scouts. Thread-bare clothing, a lack of water, internecine friction, and a general demoralization ultimately forced those Modocs to surrender, but not before they had inflicted great damage on the pursuing military. Keith Murray's account of the Modoc War is a quick-moving, dynamic, highly detailed narrative which reads like an action-novel. It is an intricately researched chronicle of events and includes actual conversation from participants on both …

[Review Of] Jane Cortez. Coagulations: New And Selected Poems, Aisha Eshe
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Jayne Cortez in Coagulations just comes right out and says all the things that need to be said, things that might only be thought about momentarily if at all. Not only does she say them, but Jayne Cortez speaks with such force and clarity that the reader is right there on the scene with her. And the scene is not pretty; there are no beautiful flowers growing in the country in the picture Cortez paints.

[Review Of] J. Eugene Grigsby, Jr. Arts And Ethnics: Background For Teaching Youth In A Pluralistic Society, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Created to respond to an issue before art educators in this country since the early 1970s, this well-referenced work, complete with index and illustrations, accomplishes that task with reasonable success. Teachers of art have struggled for decades with curriculum materials that restrict the discussion of art history to the European tradition, labeling art of any other origin as "folk art" unworthy of academic attention.

[Review Of] Waldo E. Martin, Jr. The Mind Of Frederick Douglass, Kent L. Koppelman
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
He was one of the foremost orators and abolitionists of the 19th century. He was also a feminist who actively worked for woman's suffrage. He was a Christian who opposed the use of the King James Bible in public schools as a violation of the separation of church and state. He was a former slave and designated spokesman for black people whose second marriage was to a white woman. Frederick Douglass was highly praised and soundly criticized by blacks and whites alike, but through it all he maintained a consistent and powerful moral voice calling upon this nation to measure …

[Review Of] Virginia Sapiro. Women In American Society, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Political scientist Virginia Sapiro's introductory-level women's studies text is unusual in the ease with which it integrates the data bases which form the foundation for its multidisciplinary approach. Although it assumes no background in the social sciences, the book is nevertheless demanding in the rigor and complexity of its analysis. Striking a balance between societal and individual concerns, the work moves easily from one framework to another, drawing content and methodology from fields as diverse as biology and religion.

[Review Of] David O. Sears , Jonathan L. Freedman, And Letitia Anne Peplau. Social Psychology, Alex GonzáLez
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
At a time when social psychology as a field of study has reached a new high and journals and textbooks have proliferated to meet the new demands of social psychologists and students alike, the publication of the fifth edition of a basic social psychology text says something not only about the book's endurance but also about its basic soundness. Over the years, this volume has been used by thousands of students and in many ways has set the standard for other social psychology texts which attempt to give an introduction to the field. With this edition the high standard set …

[Review Of] C. Kamarae, M. Schultz, And W.M. O'Barr, Eds. Language And Power, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In recent years, educators concerned with issues of access and equity have supported a variety of bilingual educational delivery systems. Similarly, feminists seeking representation and recognition have advocated inclusive language and nonsexist job titles. From these and other arenas, the relationship of language and power has surfaced as an issue of national importance. In this timely collection of essays, Kamarae and her associates have legitimated and extended the discussion.

[Review Of] Beverley Ormerod. An Introduction To The French Caribbean Novel, Charlotte H. Bruner
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Beverley Ormerod displays real expertise in An Introduction to the French Caribbean Novel. She is a West Indian herself, and she knows the background and culture of the Caribbean: its African slave origins and the present quest for pan-Caribbean identity. After post-graduate research at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris , she earned her doctorate in French at Cambridge University. When necessary, she translates the French originals into English. She also knows various creoles of the islands and appreciates the linguistic variety there. She has taught Caribbean literature for twenty years.
[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington
[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow is an account of maturation or, put another way, of a black woman's willingness to confront her emergent self. Tastefully groomed, sixty-four year old Avatarra " Avey" Johnson leaves her suburban New York home to vacation with two friends on a West Indies cruise. Her decision to interrupt her plans, shortly after arriving at one of the destinations, is a surprise to everyone. Avey is compelled to discount the material investment she has made in the trip in order to follow a mind that has been haunted by dreams of her great aunt Cuney.

An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz
An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz
Theses and Dissertations
In the present study, airline employees undergoing highly realistic but simulated captivity as hostages were given one of three types of prestress training programs. One group of subjects was given Problem (P)-focused training, which emphasized activities which would be useful in actively manipulating the stress situation. A second group was given Emotion (E)-focused training which emphasized techniques designed to help them directly modulate fear and anxiety associated with the situation. A third (control) group was given no specific stress management training. Retrospective data from the Ways of Coping Check List indicated that subjects tended to engage in the type of …

Essay Writing In College Mathematics And Its Effect On Achievement, Gerald Lee Burton
Theses and Dissertations
This experiment was designed to determine the effect essay writing has on learning introductory level college mathematics, learning mathematical skills, problem-solving and mathematical applications, and the retention of new knowledge in mathematics. The independent variable was the writing of essays. Essay writing included responding to questions assigned as homework and addressing mathematical situations presented in in-class activities. The dependent variables were overall achievement, skills, applications, and retention in each of these areas. The sample consisted of five classes of introductory-level algebra at Virginia State University. The experimental group consisted of 50 students in two classes; the control group was made …
Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter
Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter
Theses and Dissertations
There are speculations that disabled readers may fail to correctly decode written words because they are insensitive to language's phonetic form. This insensitivity is presumed by some to be due to a speech perceptual deficit. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences between disabled and non-disabled adolescents and elementary school students in their perceptual accuracy in decoding phonetically ambiguous speech. The effects of two processing factors derived from previous research, priming and word form (e.g., Spencer & Carter, 1982), were also examined to assess how perceptual processes may differ between groups. Clinical evidence of some verbal problems …

Health Perception, Anginal Symptoms And Life Satisfaction After Coronary Artery Bypass And Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, Diana Creger Porter
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to gather data about the perceived health, anginal symptoms and life satisfaction in CABG and PTCA patients. The study explored the interrelationships among the variables and the differences between the two groups. The problem statement was:
1. How do patients perceive their own past, present and future health, level of anginal symptoms and life satisfaction after CABG and PTCA?
2. What are the interrelationships among perceived health, anginal symptoms and life satisfaction in CABG and PTCA patients.
The conceptual framework for this study was based on the social theory of symbolic interactionism …
Illness Behaviour Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Problematic And Aproblematic Patients With A Painful Upper Extremity, Suzanne S. Seay
Illness Behaviour Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Problematic And Aproblematic Patients With A Painful Upper Extremity, Suzanne S. Seay
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to measure the illness behavior of acute and chronic upper extremity pain patients using the Illness Behaviour Questionnaire (IBQ), to determine' the rehabilitation outcome by pre-set criteria, and to determine the effectiveness of the seven scales of the IBQ in predicting the problem pain patient. Each subject completed a self-administered test packet which included the IBQ. Each was identified by the investigator as a problematic or as a problematic patient using information in the medical chart. Patients entering the study with acute pain (n=12) had less pain upon discharge and returned more quickly to …

The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts
Theses and Dissertations
The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.
Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk
Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk
Theses and Dissertations
Poor peer relations in childhood predict difficulty in adolescent and adult adjustment. Sociometric methods provide a useful way to operationalize social competence. Five groups of children (Average, Popular, Rejected, Neglected, and Controversial), identified by nomination sociometrics, show significant differences on a variety of behavioral and non-behavioral indices. This categorization scheme has value in the identification of children at risk for later maladaptive outcomes, and may be useful in designing preventive intervention programs.
The current study attempted to determine the degree to which diagnostic ratings generated by significant adults can be generalized to the sociometric status of children. Parent and teacher …
Vcu Today (1985-12-11)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
