A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards
A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards
World Studies Publications
Preface and chapter one of Cliff Edward's book, Van Gogh and God.
From the preface: "My purpose in this book is to help us move in the direction that sensitive art critics have pointed out, to enter the territory that theologians have generally ignored: the creative spiritual quest of Vincent van Gogh that he expressed in both word and image. It is my conclusion, after several years of investigation, that an understanding of van Gogh from the perspective of his spiritual search is a key to the unity of the artist's life and work, casting new light on many of …

Consulting In Higher Education: Principles For Institutions And Consultants, Jon Wergin
Consulting In Higher Education: Principles For Institutions And Consultants, Jon Wergin
Teaching and Learning Publications
American higher education is characterized by keen competition but also by a high degree of cooperativeness. This apparent paradox is illustrated by the extensive use of consultants. The typical higher education consultant is based on one campus and helps a competing institution become more effective. The net result is the reverse of Gresham's Law: good practice drives out bad, and the total enterprise of higher education benefits.
This handbook is intended to help colleges and universities make wise choices about consultants and derive the maximum benefit from them. It draws extensively from experiences of the Consultation and Advisory Service that …
[Review Of] Mark Mathabane. Kaffir Boy, Mary Ann Busch
[Review Of] Mark Mathabane. Kaffir Boy, Mary Ann Busch
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Few middle and upper class Americans, whether they are black or white, can fathom the extent of humiliation, suffering, and brutality that black people are currently enduring as a result of the South African apartheid policy. Mark Mathabane's autobiographical book Kaffir Boy documents the inhumane treatment of blacks in that society and relates the "meaning of this policy in human terms." The book gives the reader insight into the daily life of a black family struggling to survive in the midst of hatred and bigotry.
[Review Of] Joseph Bruchac, Ed. Survival This Way: Interviews With American Indian Poets, Kristin Herzog
[Review Of] Joseph Bruchac, Ed. Survival This Way: Interviews With American Indian Poets, Kristin Herzog
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
It is risky for an editor to compose a book of twenty-one interviews , each being centered in the same type of questions: What started you writing? Who were your models? What role does your tradition play in your work? How do you relate to mainstream poetry? The amazing result of reading this book is the recognition that it is neither repetitious nor dull, but highly informative and a pleasure to read. The reason for this outcome lies not only in the poetic sensibility, literary knowledge, and psychological skill of the interviewer, but in the quality of the poets selected …

[Review Of] E. Jane Gay. With The Nez Perces: A Lice Fletcher In The Field, 1889-92, Gretchen Harvey
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Persons interested in Indian history will not want to overlook this collection of E. Jane Gay's letters written from Nez Perce (Nimipu) country between 1889-1892. On four separate trips to the West, Gay accompanied her friend, special agent and anthropologist Alice Fletcher, whose job it was to coordinate the allotment of the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho. While "Her Majesty" (Gay's endearment for Fletcher) figures prominently in the correspondence, the letters tell us less about Fletcher than the subtitle suggests. What they do provide, however, is an insightful account of the allotment process at the local level, and herein lies …

[Review Of] W. Grant Dalstrom, David Lachar, And Leona E. Dahlstrom. Mmpi Patterns Of American Minorities, David Mcbride
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This anthology bobs out of the stormy sea of psychological research centered on minorities. The relationship between psychometrics and American minorities such as blacks, Native Americans, and Hispanics, is a long and troubled one. Prior to World War II standardized psychologic instruments were used mostly to assess and compare educational performance or "temperament" of whites and blacks or other racial minorities. But criticism emerged which questioned the reliability of such psychological tests. The tests seemed to find that, first, blacks and other minorities were inferior educational achievers compared to whites; and, second, severe psychosocial deficiencies of these minority group populations …
[Review Of] Beth Brant. Mohawk Trail, Helen Jaskoski
[Review Of] Beth Brant. Mohawk Trail, Helen Jaskoski
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is Beth Brant's first collection of her own work (she also edited A Gathering of Spirit, a collection of writings by American Indian women, for Sinister Wisdom). Length, genre and approach are mixed: poetry, short story, vignette, ritual, coyote tale. Thematic unity emerges in the book through Brant's focus on integrating and synthesizing her Mohawk family heritage with her current situation as writer, urban mother, and lesbian lover. The piece titled "A Long Story" brings the three themes together in the alternating soliloquies of a nineteenth-century Indian mother whose children have been wrenched a way to boarding school and …

[Review Of] D. L. Crockett-Smith. Cow Boy Amok, Alan Spector
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Politically-oriented poetry is difficult to do well. Many politically oriented writers resist displaying a certain type of passion, the type of intense commitment that helps a writer convey ideas without being didactic, because displaying such intensity may make the writer feel vulnerable or weak in public. Conversely, many poets and artists use their art to grasp and convey what they see as profound dichotomy need not hold firm, however. Art, including poetry, has shown itself to be an effective way to convey important ideas, and the political struggles that surround issues of racial violence, oppression, war, famine, and the destruction …

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick
Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Since 1983, with the publication of five well-known national reports calling for reform in education,[2] the later release of other reports by prestigious groups (such as the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession and the Holmes Group), and the enactment of approximately 700 state statutes focused on school reform,[3] the push for excellence has overshadowed earlier commitments to equity in schools. As Orlich writes, "In at least one instance, implementing the proposals of these two groups [Carnegie and Holmes] would have the same undesirable effect: reducing the number of minority teachers from few to virtually none."[4] This movement …
The Merging Of Traditional Chinese Medicine And Western Medicine In China: Old Ideas Cross-Culturally Communicated Through New Perspectives, James A. Schnell
The Merging Of Traditional Chinese Medicine And Western Medicine In China: Old Ideas Cross-Culturally Communicated Through New Perspectives, James A. Schnell
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The People's Republic of China is engaged in reforms which involve development of its economic, cultural, educational, and political processes. The need for reform has been realized as China has fallen behind the development of the western world in many areas. China closed its doors to the outside world in 1949, and it experienced limited interaction with the outside world until reform began in 1979.
[Review Of] Simon Gikandi. Reading The African Novel, Cortland P. Auser
[Review Of] Simon Gikandi. Reading The African Novel, Cortland P. Auser
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Gikandi, has added an excellent critical work to his earlier volumes on new African writers. Employing the techniques of modern criticism, he analyzes significant works of eleven African writers including, among others, Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Ferdinand Oyono, and Ayi Kwei Armah. He is concerned with the form-content relationship in the novels examined, as well as the part played by centers of consciousness of main characters. As he states, he set out to "show how ... life and consciousness" move from external reality of the novel to "interiority."

[Review Of] Ruthanne Lum Mccunn, Chinese American Portraits: Personal Histories, 1828·1988, Amy Ling
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
With her latest book, Chinese American Portraits, Ruthanne Lum McCunn adds to her growing list of publications about the painful struggle and heroic survival of the Chinese in America. In an engaging novelistic style, accompanied by equally eloquent photographs, she tells detailed stories of seventeen diverse men and women, ranging from Yung Wing, educator and patriot, and the first Chinese to graduate from an American university (Yale, class of 1854), to Ho Yuet Fung, writer and filmmaker, who emigrated from Hong Kong in the 1970s. Interspersed within these primary narratives are photographs and lengthy captions telling the stories of other …

Here’S Looking At Us Looking At Us, Amy Brook Snider
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This paper was an introduction to the mini-conference, “The Conference as Ritual: The Sacred Journey of the Art Educator,” organized by Harold Pearse, Cynthia Taylor and myself for the NAEA Convention in Los Angeles, April 1988. Art educators from Canada and the United States along with Dr. Michael Owen Jones, author and director of the Folklore and Mythology Center at UCLA (our non-participant observer) looked at our annual spring pilgrimage to various hotels in the United States from historical, psychological, philosophic, structural, and ethnographic perspectives. As the introduction to the mini-conference, my paper specifically recounts the ways that I, an …

Subjective Undercurrents: Humour And The Naea, Harold Pearse
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The psychological climate of an NAEA conference is a highly variable one. Given the temporal and spatial restrictions, emotions tend to be intense and feelings concentrated. A good deal of what is felt is predictable – after all, conferences are call conventions. But beneath the surface veneer of officiousness, formality, and collegiality, there are subjective undercurrents. The novices experience loneliness, insecurity and feelings of inadequacy being surrounded by “experts” – people whose publications they have read or with whose names they are familiar. The experts may experience anxiety and insecurity as their egos, careers and reputations are exposed to public …
Self-Reflections In Organizations: An Outsider Remarks On Looking At Culture And Lore From The Inside, Michael Owen Jones
Self-Reflections In Organizations: An Outsider Remarks On Looking At Culture And Lore From The Inside, Michael Owen Jones
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
As apparent from the title of my remarks, I am an outsider to this organization. I teach folklore courses at UCLA, which is one of five institutions in North America offering both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the study of folklore. I have been asked to speak in this session, in part because I give courses on folk art, aesthetics, fieldwork, and organizational culture and symbolism. As an outsider, as a researcher of organizational culture, and as the final speaker in this session, it seems to be my role to suggest a larger framework of study to which this …

Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks
Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The concept of cultural literacy as a process of becoming socially empowered is developed. A comparison is made between “Getty-ized DBAE” with an approach to art education informed by the development of cultural literacy. How these approaches differ, not only in their design but in the fundamental goals which motivate and guide them is illustrated. An outline is presented of a pedagogical structure around which a cultural literacy approach to art education can be organized and implemented.
