Vcu Voice (1992-04-17)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

[Review Of] A. Lavonne Brown Ruoff And Jerry W. Ward, Jr., Eds. Redefining American Literary History, Hartwig Isernhagen
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The collection by Ruoff and Ward stands within the canon discussion in American literary history, which it briefly recapitulates, placing itself in the multiculturalist camp. The first section of the four-part book can perhaps be called programmatic in just this sense: It points out how much has been overlooked among writings produced in America, and it tries to develop rationales according to which such exclusion might be rectified. Much space is here taken up by questions that concern the material and practical side of research and teaching: anthologies, MLA sessions, and the like. Much is program rather than execution, and …

Abstracts From The Twentieth Annual Conference, "Ethnicity And Racism In The Americas"
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Early in March participants gathered in Boca Raton, Florida, for the Twentieth Annual Conference of the National Association for Ethnic Studies. The conference theme, "Ethnicity and Racism in the Americas," provided the opportunity to examine perspectives related to the Quincentennial and the encounter among various populations in what is now collectively identified as the "Americas." Presenters discussed the impact of five hundred years of colonialism as well as the experiences of "new" immigrants, many of them from continents other than Europe.
[Review Of] Benjamin B. Ringer And Elinor R. Lawless. Race-Ethnicity And Society, Alberto Pulido
[Review Of] Benjamin B. Ringer And Elinor R. Lawless. Race-Ethnicity And Society, Alberto Pulido
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The heritage of European colonization in the "New World" left a legacy of dualism for the contemporary nation-states of South, Central, and North America, according to Ringer and Lawless. As a major focus of their work, their "duality thesis" contends that European colonists constructed a society modeled in their racial, religious, and national image, resulting in the formation of a lasting colonial plural structure with a permanently established elite. Racial and ethnic groups emerged first as sojourner colonizers and then formalized their relationship with the establishment of colonies and the creation of racially segmented and subjugated societies. Dominant ethnic/racial groups …

The Persistence Of Ethnicity In African American Popular Music: A Theology Of Rap Music, Angela M. S. Nelson
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The racial oppression of black people in many ways has fueled and shaped black musical forms in America. One example is the blues which originated in the rural South among poor, nonliterate, agrarian African Americans.[1] In the North the music became more formalized, and singers such as Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, and Sarah Martin became known as the queens of the "classic blues." Another musical genre is jazz, which was largely based on the twelve-bar blues harmonic structure and phrasing. It was more "polished" than the earlier New Orleans jazz at the turn of the …
Evaluation Of Quantitative Electroencephalography For Assessment Of Central Nervous System Stimulant Response, Patricia W. Slattum
Evaluation Of Quantitative Electroencephalography For Assessment Of Central Nervous System Stimulant Response, Patricia W. Slattum
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this investigation was to evaluate quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) as a measure of CNS stimulation. The reproducibility and sensitivity of quantitative EEG was compared to neuroendocrine, mood, and psychomotor performance measures.
The study was conducted in two parts. The first part investigated the inter- and intra-individual variability associated with a series of pharmacological response measures under baseline (no drug) conditions. It was an open-label pilot study in which eight healthy male volunteers underwent a series of tests (EEG, visual continuous performance task (CPT), a finger tapping task, and self-rated mood scales) repeated eight times over a 12 hour …

Reviews: The Playful City: A Vision Of The City Through The Eyes Of Young Children, Joanne Kurz Guilfoil
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Review of The Playful City Conference Program: The Playful City is a Vision of the city through the eyes of young people. It is not a vision of painted flowers on walls or a city where only children live. It is a fundamental rethinking of how we understand, design, implement and use the urban environment. It is an effort to create a city that meets the needs of all its citizens.
