Violence And Generation X: How The Right Is Managing The Moral Panic Through Television And Teen Films, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 1996

Violence And Generation X: How The Right Is Managing The Moral Panic Through Television And Teen Films, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The continual "cultural wars" between "Generation X" ("baby busters" whose birth years begin with 1961, aged 11-35), and New Right "baby boomers" (whose birth years range. From 1946 to 1960), around the issue of violence as represented in the popular cultural forms of film and television provide critically concerned art educators with an opportune moment to examine how conservative rhetoric has made "moral panic" an object of current discourses. This highly-charged debate, now literally and symbolically represented by the censorship that "V-chip" technology provides, is explored in this essay from a seemingly non-populist position given the current tide against the …

Art Education And Technology: These Are The Days Of Miracles And Wonder, Paul Duncum Jan 1996

Art Education And Technology: These Are The Days Of Miracles And Wonder, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper examines the impact on human consciousness of the exponential proliferation of electronic images, and offers suggestions concerning how educators should respond. A postmodern critique includes the ideas of an inverted Kantian aesthetics which embraces the everyday, a dramatic compression of space and time, and personal disorientation. A further critique grounds these views of consciousness in new economic arrangements and the rapaciousness of capitalism. I argue that the only viable educational response to this new consciousness is a critical examination of mass media imagery. Basic components of media education in schools are signposts of an appropriate response.

When Art Turns Violent: Images Of Women, The Sexualization Of Violence And Their Implications For Art Education, Yvonne Gaudelius, Juliet Moore Jan 1996

When Art Turns Violent: Images Of Women, The Sexualization Of Violence And Their Implications For Art Education, Yvonne Gaudelius, Juliet Moore

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Approximately two years ago, after viewing a slide of Rubens’ The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus, a group of students enrolled in an “art for elementary education majors” course were asked to write an interpretation of this work, as part of a series of art criticism activities that they had engaged in through the semester. Most of the students wrote what might be described as reasonable interpretations in that they discussed the work in formal terms and made judgments about the artwork. However, and this is what is of interest to us in this paper, only two students in …

Perspectivist Chicano Studies, 1970-1985, Michael Soldatenko Jan 1996

Perspectivist Chicano Studies, 1970-1985, Michael Soldatenko

Ethnic Studies Review

This essay examine the development and failure of Perspectivist Chicano Studies. By the late 1960s Chicano(a) academics constructed several views of Chicano Studies. Not all Chicanos(as) followed El Plan de Santa Barbara nor interpreted it in the same manner; several expressions of Chicano Studies existed. This essay traces one such articulation through the writings of Romano and Carranza who develop perspectivism. In the academy the writings of Rodriguez and Rocco manifest Perspectivist Chicano Studies. Moreover in the writings of Atencio and the activists of Hijos del sol we encounter a non-academic expression of this view of Chicano Studies. The essay …

[Review Of] Flore Zephir, Haitian Immigrants In Black American: A Sociological And Sociolinguistic Portrait, Aloma M. Mendoza

Ethnic Studies Review

Zephir explores Haitians' identification with Americans through the transitional nature of Haitians' ethnicity, roles of languages, the roles of bilingual educational programs, the generational transmission of Haitian ethnicity, and Haitians' and Black Americans' relationships. For historians and sociologists who are unfamiliar with the history of Haiti and Haitians in American, this book is informative and insightful, especially because of its useful maps and tables. Scholars interested in migration and adaptation are provided with helpful demographic information on Haitians' immigration and settlement in America. Very relevant is a critical discussion of Haiti's history and the resulting effects in the behavior and …

Affect, Identity, And Ethnicity: Towards A Social-Psychological Mode Of Ethnic Attainment, Jack David Eller Jan 1996

Affect, Identity, And Ethnicity: Towards A Social-Psychological Mode Of Ethnic Attainment, Jack David Eller

Ethnic Studies Review

Since the days of Shils and Geertz it has been common to refer to ethnicity as a bond, a tie, or an attachment. Shils used the term "tie" in the title of his seminal 1957 article to refer to a set of social relationships, including what he called "civil," "kinship," "sacred," and "primordial." The primordial tie was notable for the "ineffable significance" which social actors attribute to it and to the relationship which it engenders: "the attachment [is] not merely to the other ... as a person, but as a possessor of certain especially 'significant relational' qualities, which could only …

Like Sustenance For The Masses: Genre Resistance, Cultural Identity, And The Achievement Of Like Water For Chocolate, Ellen Puccinelli Jan 1996

Like Sustenance For The Masses: Genre Resistance, Cultural Identity, And The Achievement Of Like Water For Chocolate, Ellen Puccinelli

Ethnic Studies Review

Laura Esquivel's 1989 Mexican novel Like Water for Chocolate, neither translated into English nor published in the United States until 1992, was both an American bestseller and the basis for an acclaimed motion picture. Interestingly, though, Esquivel's work also seems to be receiving glimmers of the type of critical attention generally reserved for less "popular" works. Two particular critical studies composed in English, one by Kathleen Glenn and the other by Cecelia Lawless, have been devoted entirely to Chocolate, and both of the scholar/authors grace the faculties of reputable American institutions of higher learning.^1 As a student whose academic experience …

Unraveling An Ancient Peruvian Tapestry Sampler: A Study Of Weaver Education In The Ica Valley, Peru, Elizabeth Sara Lewis Jan 1996

Unraveling An Ancient Peruvian Tapestry Sampler: A Study Of Weaver Education In The Ica Valley, Peru, Elizabeth Sara Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

A tapestry from the Ica Valley of Peru (A.D. 900-1476), in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, is the subject of this study. This thesis is an attempt to demonstrate that the tapestry is an example of a textile form known as a "sampler." Woven as a learning tool and template by an apprentice and an expert weaver within the style and reflecting the iconography of Ica art.

A three-part approach is taken to examine the Ica tapestry. First, it is necessary to prove that the piece is a sampler, woven in an apprenticeship situation, …

Power Analysis For The Mixed Linear Model, Cheryl Annette Dixon Jan 1996

Power Analysis For The Mixed Linear Model, Cheryl Annette Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

Power analysis is becoming standard in inference based research proposals and is used to support the proposed design and sample size. The choice of an appropriate power analysis depends on the choice of the research question, measurement procedures, design, and analysis plan. The "best" power analysis, however, will have many features of a sound data analysis. First, it addresses the study hypothesis, and second, it yields a credible answer.

Power calculations for standard statistical hypotheses based on normal theory have been defined for t-tests through the univariate and multivariate general linear models. For these statistical methods, the approaches to power …

Fears In Children With Chronic Constipation: Reliability And Validity Of The Defecation Anxiety Scale, Elizabeth Page Clawson Jan 1996

Fears In Children With Chronic Constipation: Reliability And Validity Of The Defecation Anxiety Scale, Elizabeth Page Clawson

Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric constipation can lead to various negative emotional and physical consequences including abdominal pain, painful defecation, toileting fears, anxiety about pain and intestinal dysfunction. In addition, constipation can lead to socially compromising and embarrassing situations due to associated overflow incontinence. These unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms may in tum lead to conditioned avoidance behaviors, which serve to further maintain the cycle of stool retention and constipation. Presently, there have not been any studies directly addressing the role of conditioned aversion in the etiology and maintenance of constipation. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Defecation Anxiety Scale (DAS)- a …
