Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang
Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
In a project with long-term prisoners at HMP Dumfries, Scotland, tutors and students explore the notion and application of compassion, focusing in particular on the ways in which understanding compassion enables learning – not just the learning of academic subjects but also of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The project highlights the benefits of teaching a so-called extracurricular subject, at the same time as revealing its centrality to learning in the first place. A lack of adequate teaching time in prison, and the fact that compassion is not considered a core subject in education, are both cited as obstacles in …
Teachers’ Beliefs – Believing In Teaching Incarcerated Persons (English Version), Monika Schumacher
Teachers’ Beliefs – Believing In Teaching Incarcerated Persons (English Version), Monika Schumacher
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Abstract This article gives insight into a German as a foreign language course in a prison in the German speaking part of Switzerland. From the perspective of the teacher, the author reflects on beliefs and assumptions regarding professional issues which are carried into this specific learning setting and challenges these by contrasting them with anecdotal accounts. She advocates the view that rather than try and do away with beliefs teachers should believe in incarcerated person’s capability to learn and achieve.

Preliminary Results Of The Louisiana Sex Offender Treatment Program, Lee A. Underwood, Frances L.L. Dailey, Carrie Merino, Yolanda Crump
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
The purpose of this study was to offer preliminary support for the Louisiana Sex Offender Treatment Program (LSOTP) in addressing the needs of juvenile sex offenders. Research objectives were (1) to offer statistical evidence for reductions in anxiety, depression, cognitive distortion and negative attitudes towards women comparing a group of 21 adolescents, 12 of whom received services as usual and nine of whom participated in the LSOTP. A controlled experimental evaluation design was utilized. The juvenile sex offenders were randomly assigned to the experimental group for 12 weeks receiving treatment services and a control group receiving care “as usual” in …
Barriers To Participation In Vocational Orientation Programmes Among Prisoners, Dorien Brosens, Liebeth De Donder, Sarah Dury, Dominique Verté
Barriers To Participation In Vocational Orientation Programmes Among Prisoners, Dorien Brosens, Liebeth De Donder, Sarah Dury, Dominique Verté
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This study investigates the barriers to prisoners’ participation in vocational education, as well as the predictors of different types of barriers. Survey data derived from a project in a remand prison in Belgium (N=468) provided the empirical evidence for the analyses. The results indicate that facing situational and informational barriers are most common. Based on the different kinds of barriers, various types of non-participants can be distinguished and multinomial logistic regression analyses are conducted to identify in what way participants of vocational education differ from various types of non-participants. For instance, prisoners with a poor understanding of the Dutch language …

The Failure Of Whiteness In Art Education: A Personal Narrative Informed By Critical Race Theory, Sunny Spillane
The Failure Of Whiteness In Art Education: A Personal Narrative Informed By Critical Race Theory, Sunny Spillane
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This article explores failure from the perspective of a white art educator interested in social justice and educational equity. Interconnected notions of failure are explored, including: the author’s learning from personal failure as a process of professional growth over the course of her career; the specter of “school failure” and its impact on K-12 students’ educational opportunities and experiences; entrenched, systemic inequities in public schools and their failure to serve marginalized students and communities; and the potential complicity of the author’s individual professional failures – if left unaddressed – in perpetuating racialized inequities in art education. Whiteness, or white power, …
Failure To Be A “Real American”? → Challenging Failure: An Impetus To Shape Scholarship And Teaching, Christina Chin
Failure To Be A “Real American”? → Challenging Failure: An Impetus To Shape Scholarship And Teaching, Christina Chin
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The author reflects on personal experiences, highlighting vignettes of her perceived “failure to be a ‘real American,’” and recounts these stories through her own voice. With the hopes that her journey might inspire, inflame empathic frustrations with an inegalitarian status quo, and remind others of how important it is for us to participate in fighting for justice, she shares her experiences and developing understandings as she has learned to embrace more counterhegemonic scholarship and practices. She describes how her childhood experiences and daily life experiences as an adult have shaped her work as a researcher and teacher of art education. …

(Re)Constructing Erased Narratives: Unearthing Strange Fruit, Maria D. Leake
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This article focuses on the artistic practices of Vincent Valdez, who (re)constructs hidden narratives regarding the lynching of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in South Texas from 1848 until 1928. Valdez counters the historical gaps and omissions of Latino history from textbooks as a form of failure which he addresses not as a historian, but as an artist looking at the past through a contemporary lens. The conceptual framework of this research references critical race theory and its relationship with culturally sustaining pedagogies to challenge exclusionary practices that selectively privilege the histories of some groups over others. Implications for confronting the master …

Racial Disparities And Similarities In Post-Release Recidivism And Employment Among Ex-Prisoners With A Different Level Of Education, Susan Klinker Lockwood, John M. Nally, Taiping Ho, Katie Knutson
Racial Disparities And Similarities In Post-Release Recidivism And Employment Among Ex-Prisoners With A Different Level Of Education, Susan Klinker Lockwood, John M. Nally, Taiping Ho, Katie Knutson
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Previous studies rarely examined racial disparities in post-release employment and recidivism. Finding a job is an immediate challenge to all released ex-prisoners, and often more difficult for African American ex-prisoners who typically return to economically-depressed neighborhoods upon release from prison. The present researchers conducted a 5-year (2005-2009) follow-up study in an attempt to understand racial disparities in post-release employment and recidivism among 6,394 released ex-prisoners (2,531 Caucasian and 3,863 African American), while controlling for the ex-prisoner’s level of education. Results of this study showed that African American ex-prisoners had a higher unemployment rate and recidivism rate than Caucasian ex-prisoners. This …

Have You Paid Your Rent? Servant Leadership In Correctional Education, Alana Jeaniece Simmons, Latosha M. Branch
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This article makes the case for servant leadership as a model and as a philosophy to guide correctional educationalists on how to interact with their students. This article begins with an introduction to identify the gap in the literature with regards to the relationship between servant leadership and adult and correctional education. It continues with a summary of the 10 characteristics of servant leadership that parallel some of the characteristics that educators exhibit in the prison classroom, and explores how those characteristics impact the student population. We conclude by providing a framework by which further research should explore the link …

Symptoms Of Adhd Are Related To Education And Work Experience Among Incarcerated Adults, Arve Egil Asbjørnsen, Terje Manger, Ole-Johan Eikeland
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Several reports document increased prevalence of attention deficit and hyperactivity (ADHD) and similar symptoms in incarcerated members of the community, but little is known about how the symptoms are related to education and work experience. An ongoing study among Norwegian inmates reveals that 60 % report signs of ADHD. In the present study a sample of 600 inmates incarcerated in Norway filled out a questionnaire including the WURS-k (Wender Utah Rating Scale, short form) and questions to survey completed education level and work experience. A clear relationship was found between the WURS-k score and earlier job-experience, with increased probability of …
