Isolation, Hollis B. Mccracken
Isolation, Hollis B. Mccracken
Theses and Dissertations
My work investigates a lifelong passion for buildings, homes, and architecture. Buildings are more then shelters made of wood and screws; I personify them as if they were living breathing creatures. I’m particularly drawn to rundown and abandoned structures because I empathize with these sad looking buildings that were once majestic. This personal connection exists because I view them as versions of my former self, rough around the edges with a promising interior. Expanding beyond vacant and decaying buildings, I portray my experiences within fabricated architectural systems. I communicate with building materials and architecture through their many layers of physical …
Edgelands, Anne Bujold
Edgelands, Anne Bujold
Theses and Dissertations
Animal imagery has been part of the human effort to understand our place in the world since the beginning of recorded history. Through examining the role and use of animal imagery in the creation of cultural signals, I have developed a framework for my practice. Edgelands employs representations of feral animals as symbols for the “misfit” to emphasize the value of those who do not fit in. My experience as a woman in the field of metal work informs my material choice and process, subverting ironwork motifs and the purpose of gates and boundaries. Edgelands overlaps a series of material …
Victims, Victors, Or Bystanders? African American College Students' Perceptions Of African American Agency During The Civil War, Stephanie L. Hooks
Victims, Victors, Or Bystanders? African American College Students' Perceptions Of African American Agency During The Civil War, Stephanie L. Hooks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines African American students’ perspectives of African American agency during the Civil War. It also seeks to understand where their knowledge of African Americans during the Civil War comes from. The topic fits within the Critical Race Theory framework and utilized a mixed methods approach to understand the study findings. The methodology included an online survey completed by forty-two participants at a Historically Black university and 3 semi-structured interviews using the interview protocol. Descriptive statistical demographic data, open-ended responses and interview transcripts were analyzed using the agency rubric developed by the researcher. The themes that emerged from the …
What Lies Beneath, Meg Wachs
What Lies Beneath, Meg Wachs
Theses and Dissertations
What is the very first thing you notice about a person? Appearance? What if the first thing you saw was everything that they were trying to hide? We would see every flaw but we would also see every truth. What Lies Beneath is an exploration of interior and exterior and an exposure to the dark and abject inside all of us; the parts we keep hidden and the things that build up until they have no place else to go. Rooted in an examination of the human psyche, my thesis explores the difference between the facade we project to the …
From Invisible To Visible: Exploring Invisibility Syndrome And Coping Among African American Men, Jesha Jones, Stacey Lawson
From Invisible To Visible: Exploring Invisibility Syndrome And Coping Among African American Men, Jesha Jones, Stacey Lawson
Graduate Research Posters
INTRODUCTION: African American men may experience feelings of invisibility when maneuvering throughout the public education system. Encounters with alienation, discrimination, and prejudice play a major role in influencing one’s decision to remain in school or dropout. Examining the extent to which the invisibility syndrome manifests in African American men during their K-12 experiences can expand knowledge in understanding their feelings of worthlessness and insignificance in the classroom. METHOD: This research investigated the degree to which invisibility syndrome manifested in retrospective accounts in the K-12 experiences of African American collegiate men. Analysis aim to identify how coping mechanisms can …
A Survey Of Cannabis Consumption And Implications Of An Experimental Policy Manipulation Among Young Adults, Alyssa K. Rudy
A Survey Of Cannabis Consumption And Implications Of An Experimental Policy Manipulation Among Young Adults, Alyssa K. Rudy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this online cross-sectional study was to identify cannabis user profiles by administration method and examine how differential cannabis policies influence intentions among young adults. Participants were assigned randomly to one of three hypothetical cannabis policy conditions (recreationally legal; medically legal; illegal). Within conditions, participants completed measures regarding cannabis use, including administration methods, cannabis attitudes, norms, perceived behavioral control, self-efficacy, and intentions. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to determine sub-groups of past 30-day cannabis users by administration method followed by sub-group comparisons. Condition effects on intentions and associated variables were examined using ANCOVA. Four classes (Low-Blunt, Low-Bong, …
Integrating Obesity And Eating Disorder Prevention: A Pilot And Feasibility Trial Of Inspire, Courtney C. Simpson
Integrating Obesity And Eating Disorder Prevention: A Pilot And Feasibility Trial Of Inspire, Courtney C. Simpson
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity and eating disorders are pervasive concerns among young adult women, and profoundly impact physical and psychological functioning. Weight-related disorders are typically chronic conditions; their treatment is often complex and frequently ineffective. Moreover, Black and Latina women have disproportionately high rates of obesity, and experience rates of eating disorders comparable to those of their White peers; yet, they are less likely to be referred to appropriate treatment. Given the intractability of weight-related concerns and their detrimental consequences, attempts to prevent unhealthy eating attitudes and behaviors are essential. To date, few prevention programs have significantly reduced both obesity risk and eating …

Masculinities, Attachment Theory And Transformative Learning: A Discussion Of Some Theoretical Considerations For Developing An Emotionally Secure Teaching Praxis, Damien Carberry
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This paper situates education as an integral component of the overall prison rehabilitation process. The article discusses how an educational practitioner's knowledge of attachment theory and masculinities can be utilized to develop a secure methodological teaching environment in the classroom of a prison education unit and create a space where transformative learning can take place. The link between attachment theory and the social and institutional composition of masculinities are considered for their influence on perceptions and concepts of the masculine self and masculine identity in general. The practitioner who is cognizant of these issues has the potential to develop secure …
In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper
In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of An Attachment-Informed Psychotherapeutic Parenting Program For Incarcerated Parents, N. Laura Kamptner, Faith H. Teyber, Nicholas J. Rockwood, Dolly Drzewiecki
Evaluating The Efficacy Of An Attachment-Informed Psychotherapeutic Parenting Program For Incarcerated Parents, N. Laura Kamptner, Faith H. Teyber, Nicholas J. Rockwood, Dolly Drzewiecki
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
An attachment-based, psychotherapeutic parent education course was created for incarcerated mothers and fathers to improve their ability to provide positive parenting and a more stable home environment for their children. The current study assessed the effects of this parenting curriculum on parents’ tendencies to be abusive, their sense of efficacy and satisfaction as a parent, their psychological distress, and their knowledge of child development and positive child guidance strategies. Results of pre-post assessments showed a significant improvement in parents’ sense of efficacy and satisfaction in the parenting role; their knowledge, skills, and behavior as a parent; their understanding of child …
Professional Friction: Racialized Discourse And The Practice Of Teaching Art, Jessica Kirker
Professional Friction: Racialized Discourse And The Practice Of Teaching Art, Jessica Kirker
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Language is crucial in situating our selves and others. Discursive patterns create alliances or factions, establish hierarchies, and subjugate individuals or groups. In this autoethnographic study, I consider how I, as a White woman teaching art, participate in, maneuver, and manipulate spoken and unspoken racialized discourses within the context of a high school with a diverse population of students. Through the data collection process of journaling over one school year, I recorded reflections on conversations, speeches, and written communication with, between, and regarding teachers, students, parents, and school administrators.
I employed discourse analysis on these texts and draw upon Critical …
Fictive Kinship In The Aspirations, Agency, And (Im)Possible Selves Of The Black American Art Teacher, Gloria Wilson
Fictive Kinship In The Aspirations, Agency, And (Im)Possible Selves Of The Black American Art Teacher, Gloria Wilson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper, I explore the pairing of the concepts of fictive kinship and agency in order to explore racial identity narratives of the Black American art teacher. Expanding on the anthropological concept of fictive kinship, where bonds of connectedness between people help to shape selfhood, I consider the powerful impact that visual culture has on shaping identity narratives and the professional aspirations of Black American art teachers. I identify fictive kinship connections as salient in creating spaces which affect agency in the conceptualization and achievement of the self as an artist. I further use the concept of fictive kinship …
Dressing Up: Exploring The Fictions And Frictions Of Professional Identity In Art Educational Settings, Amy L. Pfeiler-Wunder
Dressing Up: Exploring The Fictions And Frictions Of Professional Identity In Art Educational Settings, Amy L. Pfeiler-Wunder
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
What fictions do we tell ourselves in order to teach? How do our stories as educators impact how we see our learners? Building from auto-ethnography research I begin with the personal and then invite co-participants to further illuminate a shared experience (Chang, 2008). In this example, I highlight the self-reflective work toward revealing and concealing identities associated with “teacher.” Using collage pedagogy (Garoian & Gaudelius, 2008), students in a pre-service art education class, created paper doll narratives marking and unmarking themselves through collaged backdrops and clothing choices which performed identities that would impact their role of teacher. Future teachers also …

The Echr Condemns Prison Overcrowding In Italy: The Total Reorganization Of The Institution And The Social Reintegration Of The Prisoner, Maria Garro, Federica Cirami
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
The contribution analyses the current Italian prison system, which has been called upon on to resolve its structural problems. The Council of Europe, in fact, in 2013 condemned Italy for inhuman treatment in its prisons. The principal accusation concerns the problem of overcrowding. The country has responded with solutions such as the application of the open system, which provides cells solely for overnight stays, and dynamic monitoring, an effective system for ensuring order in the institutions. These initiatives aim to promote re-educational activities and the social re-integration of prisoners. In addition, Italian institutions have made greater use of alternatives to …

‘Learning To Be More Human’: Perspectives Of Respect Within Prison Education In An Irish Young Offenders Institution, Emmanuel O'Grady
‘Learning To Be More Human’: Perspectives Of Respect Within Prison Education In An Irish Young Offenders Institution, Emmanuel O'Grady
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Respect is fundamental aspect of how human beings relate to each other and, arguably, is a significant factor in the relationship between student and teacher. For incarcerated adults, the relationships they foster with their teachers (and by extension the respect or disrespect cultivated within it) often has a considerable impact on their educative development. This research explores how respect, and disrespect, is perceived to be communicated within prison education by 13 prisoners and 13 teachers in an Irish Young Offenders institution. The values at the core of prison educators’ practice and their capacity to promote self-respect within their students emerged …
