[Review Of] Gretchen M. Bataille And Charles L. P. Silet, The Make-Believe Indian: Native Americans In The Movies, Helen Kathleen Walsh
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The Make-Believe Indian is all that is implied in the title and more. The slide-tape program is a useful instructional device which goes beyond the scholarly margins of The Pretend Indians (1980) by the same authors. The program clearly depicts how most white Europeans had their "images of Indians" formed well before their arrival in the Americas. We are subsequently shown and told how these fixed images of Indians were generated through the dime novels of the nineteenth century and transferred to the silver screen by movie producers in Hollywood.
Conceptual Art And The Continuing Quest For A New Social Context, Robert Morgan
Conceptual Art And The Continuing Quest For A New Social Context, Robert Morgan
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In challenging the notion of formalist aesthetic taste during the late sixties, a scattered group of artists, centered primarily in New York City, began to reveal the wider implications of art which had been largely ignored by galleries and museums. Their efforts suggested that objects made and distributed within a somewhat limited art context become part of a much larger social context; that, although art reflects the concerns of a society at a particular time and through a particular artist's interpretation, its attachment to that society is eminently clear. Whether art works exists in the form of objects, installations, propositions, …
Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Beyond Individualism In The Arts, Peter London
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
I propose that there is a direct correlation between the precarious state of our cultural pattern and the role that artists and art educators assume in our society. I hope to demonstrate that the near fatal deficit of our culture is its undue esteem of individualism over the community--of private gain over the public good, and that the artist and art teacher reflect these same social values. I wish to demonstrate that artist need not assume the role of estranged other and fierce individualist in order to exercise their powers of imagination and craft, but may put these resources toward …

[Review Of] Elizabeth Weatherford, Ed. With Emelia Seubert, Native Americans On Film And Video, Charles L. P. Silet
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is an extraordinarily impressive and thorough compilation of primarily documentary films made by and about Native Americans. The Museum of the American Indian, the Heye Foundation and Elizabeth Weatherford and Emelia Seubert are to be commended for their effort and industry. Native Americans on Film and Video grew out of a major exhibition, "The Ancestors: Native Artisans of the Americas," where more than one hundred and twenty-five films and video tapes were shown by the museum.
Enflagellation Of Naegleria Fowleri, Terry Wayne Woodworth
Enflagellation Of Naegleria Fowleri, Terry Wayne Woodworth
Theses and Dissertations
Organisms of the genus Naegleria differentiate from feeding, dividing amebae into temporary swimming flagellates when deprived of nutrients. Factors critical for enflagellation of the pathogenic species, N. fowleri, were delineated and optimal conditions established for evoking reproducible conversion of N.fowleri populations. N. fowleri enflagellation differed from that of N. gruberi in its dependence upon growth phase, population density during enflagellation and in the timing and extent of the conversion. N. fowleri amebae from stationary phase cultures grown at 37°C, washed free of medium and suspended in nutrient~free ameba saline, acquired flagella and converted to mature flagellates in a synchronous manner …
Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith
Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were studied to investigate the effects of an electric field, per se, on biological systems, without the densometric and other technical problems associated with other forms of nonionizing radiation. Exposure of mouse splenocytes to a high voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability to K+ that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μsec, 3.0 kV/cm pulse elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K+ indicating that the critical transmembrane potential (Vm) at breakdown was 1.26 volts …
Recognizing Social Issues In The Art Curriculum, Daniel Nadaner
Recognizing Social Issues In The Art Curriculum, Daniel Nadaner
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
It is a conventional assumption in art education that all experience with art contributes to the student's educational growth. Yet recent art and media criticism suggest that the arts can also function as ideologies that restrict or mystify our views of the world, thus inhibiting growth. This problem suggests the need for curriculum designers, teachers, and students to recognize the social meaning in art. This paper identifies and critically discusses two kinds of social meaning: meanings inherent in the work of art (e.g., political statements in film); and meaning created by the design of the art curriculum (e.g., a monocultural …

Futures Research Methodologies: Report Of An Exploration Of A Delphi Study, Judith A. Kula
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In an unpublished "Second Report on a Survey of Doctorates in Art Education", the author examined the responses of persons with doctorates in art education with regard to those items which dealt with their perceptions of the field as it existed both at the time of the survey and as they perceived the future might be. The responses suggested a lack of consensus regarding the present state of art education as well as little agreement regarding the direction(s) the field ought to be taking. Although the survey form used was quite lengthy, most information solicited was provided with the exception …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Art Education that is socially relevant and responsible is the shared goal that brought a group attending the 1979 National Art Education Association Convention to form the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education. Since then the Caucus has expanded both its membership and its endeavors to focus the art education profession on the importance of critical socio-cultural understanding. This issue of the BULLETIN, our second, reflects the progress we have made. Twice the size of the inaugural issue, this BULLETIN includes twelve of the many papers on the Caucus Program at the 1981 NAEA Convention. The ideas and issues …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
“The complex of concepts which western peoples use to process data and make decisions are the ultimate enemy of minorities. . . .” As an educator, and especially as one involved in educating journalists, I found myself drawn to Deloria’s statement.
Fascism: A Review Of Its History And Its Present Cultural Reality In The Americas, Jack D. Forbes
Fascism: A Review Of Its History And Its Present Cultural Reality In The Americas, Jack D. Forbes
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The Italians may have given us the word “fascismo,” but whether we use that word or the Spanish ”falangismo” or the German “National Socialism” (Naziism) we are talking about a form of social organization which has a complex history. Indeed, many persons wrongly believe that fascism as a political system first achieved state power in Italy in the 1920s. However, fascism in modern times first achieved independent (sovereign) power in the Americas -- in the Argentina of Juan Manuel de Rosas (1830s) and in the Confederate States of America (1860-1865).

Critique [Of Fascism: A Review Of Its History And Its Present Cultural Reality In The Americas], David M. Johnson
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
To quote the cartoon character Pogo: "We have met the enemy and he is us." The key strength in Forbes' analysis of fascism is his wide-ranging historical sweep and the way he shows that many elements in American character, such as prejudice against immigrants and eagerness for the spread of American ideas overseas, are related to fascistic tendencies throughout American history.

The Image-Making Picture Art Process – Exploring The Social Dimension, Bruce Breland
The Image-Making Picture Art Process – Exploring The Social Dimension, Bruce Breland
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The basic assumption is that every artist works in the present. The objects (Art) that he produces are lessons about the environment which he wears like a mask. The artist through his mask, his art, his idiosyncratic set of goggles, is very much a part of the present. The artifact (Art) which the artist produces describes his world and, as a consequence, anticipates the future. Most artists are unaware of the critical role they play (few would admit to a status that resembles that of a social navigator). They, like most of us, do not think of the objects (art) …
Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden
Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden
Theses and Dissertations
The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.
The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.
The cyclic …

Vcu Today (1981-11-18)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
