Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Barbara Hiura
Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Barbara Hiura
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Ethnic Studies is generally viewed as a minor program in the academy, lacking research philosophy and methodology. Consequently, scholars who attempt research concerning peoples of color focus on the "group": their social history, migration patterns, political and economic development, educational attainment, and lifestyle. Social science disciplinary guidelines are the usual framework. John Hatfield's "Identity as Theory and Method for Ethnic Studies" provides a basis for truly understanding ethnicity.

The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Most human services practitioners at one time or another must confront cultural issues which in many ways have a direct impact on their role and effectiveness as helping professionals. This article links the phenomenon of ethnic identity to problems, practices, and policies encountered in the field of human services. Although most of the theoretical concepts presented here are related to counseling psychology and education, other practitioners with culturally diverse client populations will also find the information applicable to their work. The social scientist, teacher and researcher, who is often the disseminator of theoretical and methodological paradigms, should also find these …
Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Thermally Stable Polypyrazoles And Acetylene Terminated Aspartimides, John W. Connell
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Thermally Stable Polypyrazoles And Acetylene Terminated Aspartimides, John W. Connell
Theses and Dissertations
Reactions involving the nucleophilic addition cyclization to activated acetylenes have been employed as a novel route to moderate to high molecular weight polymers. Polypyrazoles (PI to P12) have been prepared from the Michael-type addition cyclization of various aromatic dihydrazines to aromatic dipropynones in m-cresol. The aromatic dihydrazines employed were 4, 4'-dihydrazinodiphenyl ether (4,4' -DHDPE), 4,4 '-dihydrazinodiphenylmethane (4, 4'-DHDPM), and 4, 4' -dihydrazinodiphenyl sulfone (4,4'-DHDPS). The dipropynone sutilized were 1,1’- (1,4-phenylene) bis (3-phenyl- 2-propyn-l-one), (l,4 -PPPO), 1,1’ - (1, 3-phenylene) bis (3 -phenyl- 2 -propyn-l-one), (1,3-PPPO), 1,1 '-(1,4 -phenylene) bis (2 -propyn- l-one), (1,4 -PPO), and 1,1’- (1,3 -phenylene) bis (2 …
Attitudes Of Three Urban Appalachian Teenagers Toward Selected Early Modern American Paintings, Bonnie Southwind
Attitudes Of Three Urban Appalachian Teenagers Toward Selected Early Modern American Paintings, Bonnie Southwind
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Three urban Appalachian teenagers were taken individually into an exhibit of early modern American art in the Cincinnati Art Museum. They were asked to choose one work that they wished to discuss. When the choice was made, they were asked to discuss the work, first freely and then directed by a set of questions. All three chose paintings in realistic styles that were of subjects familiar to them. Their discussions were limited by their level of training, but were otherwise perceptive and insightful. The act of choosing, the painting chosen, and the way it was discussed all seemed to both …
The People’S Show: Promoting Critical Response, Mary Stokrocki
The People’S Show: Promoting Critical Response, Mary Stokrocki
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
An exhibition of artwork done by local artists was sponsored by a midwestern university gallery to promote greater community involvement. It was open to all artists and all media for a small entrance fee. A questionnaire of provocative categories was given out at the opening to elicit spectator reactions to the work and to help them vote. They were asked to decide which works best represented the particular categories. Responses to the show were mostly positive; however, certain artworks evoked much controversy and publicity. Two artworks, bordering on the pornographic, raised the question: Is art anything one can get away …

Children’S Views On Art In The Primary Grades, K-3, Nancy R. Johnson
Children’S Views On Art In The Primary Grades, K-3, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This study examined some of the kinds of know ledge that primary students have regarding art. Approximately one hundred students participated in the study. The researcher visited their classrooms, sat among them, and interviewed them as they did their art work. Although the students appeared to have an accurate grasp of the methods for working with art media, they were not very knowledgeable about ways to judge art. At all grade levels, the students' knowledge was somewhat inconsistent and not articulated very well. The students exhibited both unique meanings and socially shared meanings in their discourse and confirmed the importance …
Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Neil Nakadate
Critique [Of Identity As Theory And Method For Ethnic Studies By John Hatfield], Neil Nakadate
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
John Hatfield's discussion of identity and ethnicity in an increasingly wider, abstract, and problematical context is an extended definition of the current dilemma. I suspect Hatfield intends to offer an essentially optimistic statement, but for many readers questions and doubts may remain, if not predominate.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This annotated bibliography on black Americans in various media formats came at a time when I was searching for bibliographic information on black women. As a result, I was able to locate several titles of articles from the Bibliography that were appropriate and timely. The entries reflect variety in source content, and the use of media fields helps to catalog the publication materials.
Electrochemical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature, Ph, And Electrolyte On The Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cytochrome C, Kent Brian Koller
Electrochemical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature, Ph, And Electrolyte On The Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cytochrome C, Kent Brian Koller
Theses and Dissertations
Spectroelectrochemical and electrochemical methods have been used to investigate the characteristics of heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and indium oxide electrodes. Direct electron transfer between cytochrome c and solid electrodes is of interest due to the interfacial character of electron transfer between the protein and its membrane-bound physiological redox partners. The conformation of ferricytochrome c is affected more by changes in temperature or pH than is its reduced form, ferrocytochrome c. This difference in conformational stability is attributed to the +1 charge of the heme in ferricytochrome c that is largely embedded in the hydrophobic interior of the enzyme. …
An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz
An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz
Theses and Dissertations
In the present study, airline employees undergoing highly realistic but simulated captivity as hostages were given one of three types of prestress training programs. One group of subjects was given Problem (P)-focused training, which emphasized activities which would be useful in actively manipulating the stress situation. A second group was given Emotion (E)-focused training which emphasized techniques designed to help them directly modulate fear and anxiety associated with the situation. A third (control) group was given no specific stress management training. Retrospective data from the Ways of Coping Check List indicated that subjects tended to engage in the type of …
Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown
Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.
The results obtained from the free radical assay did not show any correlation to the results observed either in vitro …
Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter
Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter
Theses and Dissertations
Trimethoprim resistance(Tp r) is encoded by conjugative plasmids in clinically significant staphylococcal isolates. Two genetically and physically similar plasmids from S. aureus, pG01 and pGOS, have Tp r genes that map in different locations on these plasmids. In order to study the relatedness of the Tp r genes and their products to other known Tp r genes, a 1.2 kb fragment of pG01 and a 4.2 kb fragment of pGOS were cloned in E. coli and used as probes for in situ filter hybridization experiments.
A 500 base pair subclone of the original 1.2 kb fragment containing only the staphylococcal …
