A series of sharp intense peaks was observed in the low-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of unintentionally doped GaN in the photon energy range between 3.0 and 3.46 eV. We attributed the majority of these peaks to excitons bound to unidentified structural and surface defects. Most of the structural- and surface-related peaks (at 3.21, 3.32, 3.34, 3.35, 3.38, and 3.42 eV) were observed in Ga polar films. In N polar GaN, we often observed the 3.45 eV peak attributed to excitons bound to the inversion domain interfaces.

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner Jan 2003

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

Talking about the content and meaning of abstract animation, for the practitioner or enthusiast, is like discussing why one eats chocolate or why we stand at the edge of the ocean, experiencing the sensation of the sand being sucked out from under our feet by the pull of the receding wave. Or why listening to a beautiful adagio can create such a stirring response. These experiences stand for themselves and need no explanation.

For the uninitiated, or the viewer who has little to no encounter with abstract animation, however, these moving images can be initially disconcerting and hard to understand. …

Case Studies For Dentistry®: Development Of A Tool To Author Interactive, Multimedia, Computer-Based Patient Simulations, Louis M. Abbey, Pamela Arnold, Lucy Halunko, Mary Beth Huneke, Stacie Lee

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Publications

Computer-based patient simulations have been used to enhance the dental curriculum since the 1980s. This article describes the development of CASE STUDIES for Dentistry (CSD), a patient case simulation building template, developed at Virginia Commonwealth University, with which authors who have no programming expertise can create realistic, effective, interactive multimedia patient simulations by entering their own information and images into a straightforward, fill in the blanks interface. This program was written with Authorware, by Macromedia Inc. Design considerations included emphasis on information collection and analysis, synthesis of collected information, hypothesis proposal and testing, diagnosis, and treatment planning. The program consists …

Different Cdna Microarray Patterns Of Gene Expression Reflecting Changes During Metastatic Progression In Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, Dan Huang, Wantao Chen, Ronggen He, Fan Yu, Zhiyuan Zhang, Weiliu Qiu Jan 2003

Different Cdna Microarray Patterns Of Gene Expression Reflecting Changes During Metastatic Progression In Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, Dan Huang, Wantao Chen, Ronggen He, Fan Yu, Zhiyuan Zhang, Weiliu Qiu

Pathology Publications

Background The metastatic ability of tumor cells is determined by level of expression of specific genes that may be identified with the aid of cDNA microarray containing thousands of genes and can be used to establish the expression profile of disease related genes in complex biological system.

Materials and Methods Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma cell line and its high metastases adenoid cystic carcinoma clone were used as model systems to reveal the gene expression alteration related to metastasis mechanism by cDNA microarray analysis. The correlation of metastatic phenotypic changes and expression levels of 4 selected genes (encoding CD98, L6, RPL29, …

The Comic/Anime Fan Culture In Taiwan: With A Focus On Adolescents’ Experiences, Jin-Shiow Chen Jan 2003

The Comic/Anime Fan Culture In Taiwan: With A Focus On Adolescents’ Experiences, Jin-Shiow Chen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A striking phenomenon in this technology-laden and media-driven modern Taiwanese society is that fan culture has become overly active and enthusiastic. Adolescents make up the major percentage of the fan population. Whenever a famous singer or movie star launches an event, a mass of youngsters are sure to chase him or her throughout the series of fan parties that go on afterwards. This phenomenon also happens in comic/anime fandom. In August of 1995, an event of Meeting Anime Stars given in a department store across the Taipei Train Station attracted more than fifteen thousand adolescents who lined up for hours …

(Re)Marking Time/(Re)Examining The Social History Of A Community School Of Visual Art, James H. Sanders Jan 2003

(Re)Marking Time/(Re)Examining The Social History Of A Community School Of Visual Art, James H. Sanders

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this paper the author argues that education researchers, artists, educators and arts agencies need to reexamine their policies and practices and grapple with the difficult knowledge of their embeddedness in the problems they seek to resolve. The author identifies the narrative research methods and post positivist analyses he employs in constructing a polyvocal history of an arts education agency. Drawing on fifty-five years of agency meeting minutes, promotional catalogs and news clippings as cross-read within/against the oral testimonies of participants in a community school of visual art, the author critically reflects on the ways community-based arts institutions navigate the …

[Review Of] Jun Xing And Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, Eds. Reversing The Lens: Ethnicity, Race, Gender, And Sexuality Through Film, Susan Crutchfield Jan 2003

[Review Of] Jun Xing And Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, Eds. Reversing The Lens: Ethnicity, Race, Gender, And Sexuality Through Film, Susan Crutchfield

Ethnic Studies Review

The fourteen essays collected in Xing and Hirabayashi's new volume make a strong argument for serious intellectual work involved not only in the college-level study of moving images for their messages about minority groups but also in pedagogical approaches that take film and video as their primary texts. Written by a collection of scholars who work in ethnic and racial studies and various allied fields, the essays share a concern with pedagogy and with showing "how visual media can be used to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and communications, particularly with respect to the thorny topics of ethnicity and race" (3). Indeed, …

The Perfect Perspective: A Mathematical Analysis Of Perspective Using Tools Available To Middle School Students, W. Griffin Jan 2003

The Perfect Perspective: A Mathematical Analysis Of Perspective Using Tools Available To Middle School Students, W. Griffin

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This paper examines the basic properties of perspective drawings, the history of perspective drawings, and the basic mathematics of perspective. Using a side view and a top view of a three-dimensional projection, similar triangles can be used to find distances from the axes and vanishing point in a projection. By breaking the three-dimensional projection into two, two-dimensional planes, one can recreate projections based on actual figures, or create placements of figures in real space based on a projection. Using this method, one 'can change a projection based on the changing position of the vanishing point. This simple approach to perspective …

Commentary: Art Education And New Technology: Are You Ready?, Susan Witwicki Jan 2003

Commentary: Art Education And New Technology: Are You Ready?, Susan Witwicki

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

As an Art education major, I was somewhat daunted by a recent job offer requiring me to teach in the Career and Technology Studies department. As a recovering technophobe and lover of scissors and paste, I was cautious of this ‘Brave New World’ of computers. I perceived post-millennial teens to be cyber savvy know-it-alls, largely due to the way in which they were portrayed in the media. As well, if the ads were true, teens weren’t the only ones riding the new technological wave; Cisco Systems 1999 television campaign presented a global Utopia of citizens united through surfing the net. …

From Bucktown To Niketown: Doing Visual Cultural Studies (Chicago Style), Kevin Tavin, Lea Lovelace, Albert Stabler, Jason Maxam Jan 2003

From Bucktown To Niketown: Doing Visual Cultural Studies (Chicago Style), Kevin Tavin, Lea Lovelace, Albert Stabler, Jason Maxam

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

We begin this article with an epigrammatic manifesto: Art education should be a political project that engages visual representations, cultural sites, and public spheres through the language of critique, possibility, and production. Art educators should help students understand, critique, and challenge how individuals, institutions, and social practices are inscribed in power differently, to expand the possibilities for freedom, equality, and radical democracy, through relevant and meaningful production. These are the elements and principles of a politically engaged and socially just art education. This is art education as visual cultural studies.

Teaching Critical Practice For Future Technologies, Leslie Sharpe Jan 2003

Teaching Critical Practice For Future Technologies, Leslie Sharpe

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

What are the issues when faculty wishes to teach art students critical or alternative practices with newer technologies not yet widely available to the public? Can one teach alternative practices that consider social or personal contexts when the technologies are not yet publicly available? What other issues are involved when teaching art students to do fine art with such technologies, and when not training artists to do commercial work for the communications industry or mainstream media? What does it mean for the art students who wants to use these technologies for fine art to have ideas for their use, but …

Editorial: Research, Visual Cultural Studies, Programs, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2003

Editorial: Research, Visual Cultural Studies, Programs, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This year’s journal explores a number of social issues that continue to reassert themselves on the postmodern landscape. How can social and cultural justice assert itself in arts based education? What is our responsibility to “at risk” children when it comes to a critical pedagogy? The first two essays use innovative approaches to arts based research by incorporating a critical autobiographical methodology. James Sanders and Diane Conrad, drawing their theoretical base from critical autoethnographic inquiry, attempt to examine themselves within the context of their investment as administrator, teacher and researcher.
