Knowledge And Awareness Of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Among Women, Jiyeon Jeon, Marcia Victor, Stuart P. Adler, Abigail Arwady, Gail Demmeler, Karen Fowler, Johanna Goldfarb, Harry Keyserling, Mehran Massoudi, Kristin Richards, Stephanie A. S. Staras, Michael J. Cannon

Pediatrics Publications

Background. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a leading cause of disabilities in children, yet the general public appears to have little awareness of CMV. Methods. Women were surveyed about newborn infections at 7 different geographic locations. Results. Of the 643 women surveyed, 142 (22%) had heard of congenital CMV. Awareness increased with increasing levels of education (P<.0001). Women who had worked as a healthcare professional had a higher prevalence of awareness of CMV than had other women (56% versus16%, P <.0001). Women who were aware of CMV were most likely to have heard about it from a healthcare provider (54%), but most could not correctly identify modes of CMV transmission or prevention. Among common causes of birth defects and childhood illnesses, women's awareness of CMV ranked last. Conclusion. Despite its large public health burden, few women had heard of congenital CMV, and even fewer were aware of prevention strategies.

Digital Equity In Education: A Multilevel Examination Of Differences In And Relationships Between Computer Access, Computer Use And State-Level Technology Policies, Jonathan D. Becker Jan 2006

Digital Equity In Education: A Multilevel Examination Of Differences In And Relationships Between Computer Access, Computer Use And State-Level Technology Policies, Jonathan D. Becker

Educational Leadership Publications

Using data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) state assessment and a survey of state-level technology policies, this study examined digital equity in education as a multilevel organizational phenomenon with data from 70,382 students in 3,479 schools and 40 states. Students in rural schools or schools with higher percentages of African American students were likely to have less access to computers. With respect to computer use, girls and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch were more likely to use computers more frequently when computers are available in the classroom. With respect to relationships between computer access and …

Nosocomial Bloodstream Infections Caused By Klebsiella Pneumoniae: Impact Of Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase (Esbl) Production On Clinical Outcome In A Hospital With High Esbl Prevalence, Alexandre R. Marra, Sérgio B. Wey, Adauto Castelo, Ana Cristina Gales, Guilherme R. Cal, José R. Do Carmo Filho, Michael B. Edmond, Carlos Alberto Pires Pereira Jan 2006

Nosocomial Bloodstream Infections Caused By Klebsiella Pneumoniae: Impact Of Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase (Esbl) Production On Clinical Outcome In A Hospital With High Esbl Prevalence, Alexandre R. Marra, Sérgio B. Wey, Adauto Castelo, Ana Cristina Gales, Guilherme R. Cal, José R. Do Carmo Filho, Michael B. Edmond, Carlos Alberto Pires Pereira

Internal Medicine Publications

Background The frequency of ESBL producing Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections (BSI) is high in Brazilian hospitals, however little is known regarding what role, if any, resistance plays in the expected outcome in hospitals with a high prevalence of these pathogens.

Methods From 1996 to 2001, hospital acquired K. pneumoniae BSI were evaluated retrospectively. Each patient was included only once at the time of BSI. ESBL producing strains were identified using the E-test method. The association of variables with the mortality related to bacteremia was included in a stepwise logistic regression model.

Results One hundred and eight hospital acquired K. pneumoniae …

VCU Health Publications

Classic osteogenesis imperfecta, an autosomal dominant disorder associated with osteoporosis and bone fragility, is caused by mutations in the genes for type I collagen. A recessive form of the disorder has long been suspected. Since the loss of cartilage-associated protein (CRTAP), which is required for post-translational prolyl 3-hydroxylation of collagen, causes severe osteoporosis in mice, we investigated whether CRTAP deficiency is associated with recessive osteogenesis imperfecta. Three of 10 children with lethal or severe osteogenesis imperfecta, who did not have a primary collagen defect yet had excess post-translational modification of collagen, were found to have a recessive condition resulting in …

Surgical Infection Society Guidelines For Vaccination After Traumatic Injury, Thomas R. Howdieshell, Daithi Heffernan, Joseph T. Dipiro Jan 2006

Surgical Infection Society Guidelines For Vaccination After Traumatic Injury, Thomas R. Howdieshell, Daithi Heffernan, Joseph T. Dipiro

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Background: Recommendations for vaccination of injured patients against infection are evolving. Newly-recognized infections, safety considerations, changing epidemiology, and redefinition of patient groups at risk are factors that may influence vaccine development priorities and recommendations for immunization. However, recommendations must often be formulated based on incomplete data, forcing reliance on expert opinion to address some crucial questions. These guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the prevention or treatment of infectious morbidity and mortality after traumatic injury, such as soft tissue wounds, human or animal bites, or after splenectomy.

Methods: A panel of experts conducted a thorough review of published literature, …

Organic Anion And Cation Transporter Expression And Function During Embryonic Kidney Development And In Organ Culture Model Systems, Douglas H. Sweet, Satish A. Eraly, Kevin T. Bush, Sanjay K. Nigam

Pharmaceutics Publications

Background

Organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs and OCTNs) mediate the proximal tubular secretion of numerous clinically important compounds, including various commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Here, we examine the ontogeny of these transporters in rat embryonic kidney in detail, both in vivo and in two in vitro organ culture models of kidney development, whole embryonic kidney (WEK) culture and culture of induced metanephric mesenchyme (MM).

Methods

We used QPCR to determine expression levels of transporter genes in rat embryonic kidneys on each day of gestation from ed13 to ed18, in induced and un-induced MM, and on each day of one …

Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner Jan 2006

Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

The focus of this investigation is in the realm of animation that straddles the ever-shrinking gulf between a screening and an exhibition, the theater and the art gallery. There is a subtle maturity and movement in the animation art world that not only continues but also extends the often-overlooked legacy of independent animation while engaging the conceptual dialogue of contemporary art. This tradition of an art aesthetic is passed from the early inventors who fashioned the necessary tools and images. The myriads of techniques and concepts evidenced throughout this history inform the current practitioner, just as digital technology and the …

E(Raced) Bodies In And Out Of Sight/Cite/Site, Wanda B. Knight Jan 2006

E(Raced) Bodies In And Out Of Sight/Cite/Site, Wanda B. Knight

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In the social sphere there are numerous unmarked and unexamined categories. Heterosexuality, maleness, and middle classness are some of the apparent ones. However, Whiteness is perhaps the foremost unmarked and thus unexamined category in art education. And like other unmarked categories, White is assumed to be the human norm. Moreover, when Whiteness goes unexamined, racial privilege associated with Whiteness goes unacknowledged. In this article, I use the metaphor of sight or vision to examine race through a framework of bodies. My focus is, specifically, on the preparation of the authoritative White body of the art teacher to teach in classrooms …

"No Opportunity For Song:" A Slovak Immigrant's Silencing Analyzed Through Her Pronoun Choice, Danusha V. Goska

Ethnic Studies Review

I can't tell the most frightening story I know, because stories are made of words, and once I was without them. I was trekking in Nepal and ended up with amnesia. Later I stumbled into a mission hospital with a bruised jaw. A bad fall? I can't say. I had no words. No words for this thing that was wrenching and crying, in which "I" - a bundle of terror - seemed trapped. No words for where I began, stopped, or the mud stubble terrace on which I sat. No words to map, no words to define, no words to …
