Effect Of Local Anesthesia On Postoperative Pain With General Anesthesia, Belinda Campbell
Effect Of Local Anesthesia On Postoperative Pain With General Anesthesia, Belinda Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine if the use of local anesthesia with general anesthesia results in less postoperative pain. The alternative hypothesis is that children will experience less postoperative discomfort when utilizing intraligamental local anesthetic during the intra-operative time period. Methods: Patients were recruited for this single blind, randomized, prospective cohort study with the following inclusion criteria: English speaking children age 3-6 years, ASA I/II requiring general anesthesia for dental treatment. Randomization was done to place patients in groups of no local anesthetic vs. local anesthetic administration. A Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale was utilized to evaluate …
Mental Space, Tiffany Floyd
Mental Space, Tiffany Floyd
Theses and Dissertations
I create process-oriented, mixed media work in an intuitive manner. I develop compositions by choosing from a wide range of materials and media. I have established a visual vocabulary that I use formally and, on occasion, symbolically to express my personal thoughts. My prints are primarily collagraphs pulled from plates that are constructed using foam, rope, sticks, cardboard, or screen prints. My fiber works are mixed media and often combine soft and stiff fabrics, dyes, pigments, embroidery, quilting, and screen printing. At times I find ways to integrate hard, rigid materials such as kiln-formed and sandblasted glass into my fiber …
Workplace Discrimination And The Perception Of Disability, William Draper
Workplace Discrimination And The Perception Of Disability, William Draper
Theses and Dissertations
Decisions by the EEOC in favor of claimants perceived to have disabilities disproportionately exceeded those in favor of claimants with documented disabilities. This finding lends support to the assertion that unconscious/implicit bias is persistent in the workplace.
Unravelings, Megan Mcconnell
Unravelings, Megan Mcconnell
Theses and Dissertations
My work is a collection of narratives. Each one is the unfolding of the story of a person or thing. Several pieces are made up of objects that tell the story of their owners, giving clues to their lifestyles and experiences. I am interested in the story behind the things and people that I come across on a daily basis. For instance, what was housed in the drawers of the dresser I found in a thrift shop? Who drank from the milk bottle I now use as a vase? If I see a discarded toy on the street, I wonder …
Responding To The Child Welfare Workforce Crisis Here And Now: A Constructivist Approach To Understanding Supervision, Abigail K. Wyche
Responding To The Child Welfare Workforce Crisis Here And Now: A Constructivist Approach To Understanding Supervision, Abigail K. Wyche
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the author argues that there is strong evidence that the child welfare workforce continues to be in crisis. While a great deal of research has indicated that supervision is closely linked to the crisis, extremely high rates of turnover have not been notably reduced through the efforts of administrators or academics to change supervisory practices. Therefore, the author makes the case that it is time to employ an alternative methodology—constructivist inquiry. Constructivist inquiry is based on paradigmatic assumptions that make it distinct from the functionalist approach that researchers most commonly use to understand the child welfare workforce …
Transcending Terra Firma, Kimberly H. Compton
Transcending Terra Firma, Kimberly H. Compton
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement My landscapes depict the converging of sky, water, and land to symbolize transcendence, transformation, and life. I use an impressionistic style and manipulate the effects of light to capture a scene as it appears to me. Other times I re-arrange sky, land, and water into compositions that I visualize in my imagination. The convergence of natural elements can be a wide open gate where the ocean meets the sky, or it can be the narrow meandering path of a long river that meets the sky at a distant horizon. I use the physicality of terra firma, the place …
The Strategic Association Between Enterprise Content Management And Decision Support, Jaffar Alalwan
The Strategic Association Between Enterprise Content Management And Decision Support, Jaffar Alalwan
Theses and Dissertations
To deal with the increasing information overload and with the structured and unstructured data complexity, many organizations have implemented enterprise content management (ECM) systems. Published research on ECM so far is very limited and reports on ECM implementations have been scarce until recently (Tyrväinen et al. 2006). However, the little available ECM literature shows that many organizations using ECM focus on operational benefits while strategic decision-making benefits are rarely considered. Moreover, the strategic capabilities such as decision making capabilities of ECM are not fully investigated in the current literature. In addition, the literature lacks a strategic management framework (SMF) that …
Visual Intimacy, Richard Bottomley
Visual Intimacy, Richard Bottomley
Theses and Dissertations
My work is designed to visually intrigue and excite while creating a sense of intimacy with the viewer. The inspiration for my paintings, prints, and mixed media pieces are derived from views of flowers and the female form. Sometimes the flowers and forms are presented separately, sometimes they are combined into single works. I experiment with different media and supports, such as acrylic paint and gel transfers on canvas or Plexiglas, drypoint on Plexiglas, and chalk pastels on wood paneling. Compositionally, I often place light, transparent shapes against dark, opaque grounds to create dramatic contrast. I also use a wide …
Defining Museum Intervention: An Analysis Of James Putnam's Time Machine, Caitlin Hanbury
Defining Museum Intervention: An Analysis Of James Putnam's Time Machine, Caitlin Hanbury
Theses and Dissertations
In his 2001 publication Art and Artifact: The Museum as Medium, independent curator James Putnam coins the term ‘museum intervention’ to describe a type of artwork created by some artists as a means to critique organizing principles of the museum. Putnam’s book analyzes examples of museum interventions, including his own 1994 exhibition, Time Machine: Ancient Egypt and Contemporary Art, but fails to offer a definition for the term. This thesis analyzes the trajectory of exhibition practices leading to the publication of the new term through an examination of historical changes in museum display. The paper then analyzes examples of museum …

Theses and Dissertations
My faith is an important factor in my art making. I believe the ability to create is endowed by an original Creator. My work continues this initial creative legacy while confronting viewers with a storyline of beauty, truth, justice, and redemption. I am a realist oil painter devoted to portraiture and figurative work. Human form, gesture, and facial expression provide inexhaustible subject matter. I depict narratives from antiquity to the present day. Some of my paintings contain spiritual elements based on biblical writings presented in a contemporary context. I work from photos that I take of family, friends, and strangers …

Use Of Procalcitonin As A Biomarker Of Bacterial Infection In Acute Liver Failure And Acute Liver Injury, Jody Balko
Use Of Procalcitonin As A Biomarker Of Bacterial Infection In Acute Liver Failure And Acute Liver Injury, Jody Balko
Theses and Dissertations
Infections in patients with acute liver failure (ALF) and acute liver injury (ALI) are a frequent occurrence. Because ALF and ALI patients share many of the same clinical features as patients with severe sepsis and septic shock, identifying an infection based upon clinical manifestations is extremely difficult. Bacterial culture and sensitivity reports require 24 to 72 hours to be finalized after the need for a culture is suspected and obtained. During this time period, ALF and ALI patients are either not receiving required antibiotic therapy, receiving antibiotic therapy that is not required or not appropriate for the infecting bacterial pathogen, …
Journeys And Destinations, Houston Leeanne Lawrynas
Journeys And Destinations, Houston Leeanne Lawrynas
Theses and Dissertations
My work includes both painting and mixed media approaches. My paintings portray the conflict and discrepancies between Eastern and Western cultures. Each painting emphasizes the Western fascination with body image, fashion, and status symbols. In contrast, they also contain intricate details influenced by the patterns of Eastern fabrics and rug designs, as well as images of Buddha. I reflect on the things that each culture finds important or valuable. In my mixed media work, I employ techniques that combine transfer, collage, and painting. My materials include photographs, newspapers, magazines, tissue paper, and text from books. The inspirations are photographs from …
My Identity, Kris Cho
My Identity, Kris Cho
Theses and Dissertations
My identity is the dominate theme in my works. As a Korean American, I am influenced by life experiences in both countries. These two vastly different cultures and experiences define me as an individual. I use references and symbolism from both cultures as elements in my painting, mixed media, and crafts. I have spent half of my life in Korea, my mother country, and the other half in America, my new homeland. Living as an American, my artworks keep me connected to my Korean roots. Creating artwork is my way to relay who I really am as a Korean American.
The Effects Of Micro- And Macro-Scale Geometric Parameters On Performance Of The Pleated Aerosol Filters, Shahryar Fotovati
The Effects Of Micro- And Macro-Scale Geometric Parameters On Performance Of The Pleated Aerosol Filters, Shahryar Fotovati
Theses and Dissertations
While most filters are made of pleated fibrous media, almost all existing theories of aerosol filtration are developed for flat media placed perpendicular to the air flow. Expressions developed for flat sheet media do not provide accurate information directly useful for designing a pleated filter, and therefore, most progress made in developing pleated filters is based on empiricism. This study is aimed at establishing an enabling knowledge that allows for a better design and optimization of pleated aerosol filters. This study is focused on developing a predictive simulation method that accounts for the influence of a filter’s micro-scale geometric parameters, …
Rhythms Of Times And Places, Bettye Pope
Rhythms Of Times And Places, Bettye Pope
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement I am inspired by living in multiple environments and experiencing many regions of the United States. My imagery varies from references to landscapes to geometric abstractions of quilt patterns. My media consists of acrylics, oils, and pastels on supports including fabric, canvas, or paper. Mixed media allows me to add multiple layers in creating visual textures, depth, and energy to draw in my viewers. The media is glazed, flowed, dripped, sprayed, rolled, scraped, and scrubbed into my interpretations of natural elements and geometric patterns. My landscape paintings are of observations of nature, and I attempt to capture the …
Genius Loci, Cecily Corcoran
Genius Loci, Cecily Corcoran
Theses and Dissertations
I attempt to capture the simple and fleeting beauty of Washington, DC, before it folds into time. In my representational paintings and monotypes, I want to convey the elegance and serenity of the streets, cars, pedestrians, and the majestic buildings of our nation’s capital. As a native Washingtonian, I’ve always admired the view of the city from across the Potomac River, from sunrise to sunset. I want to share these views and these experiences of my daily life with the viewer.
