Risk Factors For Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction In Older Adults Undergoing Major Noncardiac Surgery, Osama Shoair
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a deterioration in cognitive function that occurs after surgery as measured by neuropsychological tests. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for POCD in older adults three months after major noncardiac surgery. Methods: This is a prospective study of patients aged 65 years and older who underwent major noncardiac surgery. Patients’ cognitive function was assessed before and three months after surgery using a computerized neurocognitive battery. Blood samples were withdrawn from patients before surgery to identify patients with high level of C-reactive protein (CRP), and patients who had …
Dispositional Mindfulness As A Moderator Of Electrocortical And Behavioral Responses To Affective Social Stimuli, Jordan T. Quaglia
Dispositional Mindfulness As A Moderator Of Electrocortical And Behavioral Responses To Affective Social Stimuli, Jordan T. Quaglia
Theses and Dissertations
Numerous studies have linked dispositional mindfulness to enhanced emotion regulation. The present research examined dispositional mindfulness as a predictor of emotion regulation in social affective contexts. Participants completed passive viewing and Emotional Go/No-Go tasks involving social affective stimuli (happy, neutral, and fearful facial expressions). Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioral responses were examined to discern whether dispositional mindfulness predicted differential neural and behavioral responses indexing attention to, awareness of, and inhibitory control over automatic responses to affective social stimuli. Dispositional mindfulness predicted larger (more negative) N100, N200 and No-Go N200 amplitudes during the Emotional Go/No-Go task, but was not associated with …
Evaluating Social Sustainability In Plans For Inter-Cultural Cities, Diane Faye Gapas
Evaluating Social Sustainability In Plans For Inter-Cultural Cities, Diane Faye Gapas
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there is an increasing interest and awareness on sustainability and sustainable development. Sustainability is comprised of the three E’s: environment, economy and equity. Of these three, the equity or the social sustainability component is often overlooked. As cities become more global and demographically diverse due to immigration, diversity’s impact to the city should be addressed through policies and plans. The content analysis and evaluation of city plans, policies and urban design examines their response to accommodating and including inter-cultural diversity using identified indicators of social sustainability and equity. This study finds that the length of time a city has …

Can Managerial Knowledge Of Executive Compensation Encourage Or Deter Real Earnings Management? An Analysis Of R&D Reporting Methods, Andrea Gouldman
Can Managerial Knowledge Of Executive Compensation Encourage Or Deter Real Earnings Management? An Analysis Of R&D Reporting Methods, Andrea Gouldman
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effects of research and development (R&D) reporting method and managerial knowledge of supervisor compensation on R&D project continuation decisions. The current study employs an experiment with a 2x3 between-participants design, manipulating both R&D reporting method (expense vs. capitalize) and knowledge of supervisor compensation (control group with no knowledge vs. knowledge of non-restricted stock compensation vs. knowledge of restricted stock compensation). Using salient short-term incentives to motivate real earnings management, this study demonstrates that capitalization may result in managers foregoing economically efficient R&D investment opportunities. The results indicate that managerial knowledge of supervisor compensation structure has little …

Chromosome-Specific Telomere Length In Women With Breast Cancer: Their Relationship To Chemotherapy And Acquired Psychoneurological Symptoms, Areej Alhareeri
Chromosome-Specific Telomere Length In Women With Breast Cancer: Their Relationship To Chemotherapy And Acquired Psychoneurological Symptoms, Areej Alhareeri
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common diagnosed malignancies in females. Although 90% of early diagnosed women are expected to survive for at least 5 years, their quality of life is adversely affected by a cluster of symptoms which we collectively named “psychoneurological symptoms’’ (PN). Given that acquired telomere attrition has been speculated to be a causal factor in chronic diseases and the lack in the literature of mechanisms giving rise to PN symptoms, this study was performed to assess telomere length using a chromosome-specific telomere assay before receiving chemotherapy and at the first chemotherapy. We showed significant …
Modification Of Nanostructures Via Laser Processing, Louis Franzel
Modification Of Nanostructures Via Laser Processing, Louis Franzel
Theses and Dissertations
Modification of nanostructures via laser processing is of great interest for a wide range of applications such as aerospace and the storage of nuclear waste. The primary goal of this dissertation is to improve the understanding of nanostructures through two primary routes: the modification of aerogels and pulsed laser ablation in ethanol. A new class of materials, patterned aerogels, was fabricated by photopolymerizing selected regions of homogeneous aerogel monoliths using visible light. The characterization and fabrication of functionally graded, cellular and compositionally anisotropic aerogels and ceramics is discussed. Visible light was utilized due to it’s minimal absorption and scattering by …
Structural And Functional Characterization Of Sortase A, Vishaka Santosh
Structural And Functional Characterization Of Sortase A, Vishaka Santosh
Theses and Dissertations
Sortases have been known to be essential in Gram-positive bacteria for attaching proteins onto the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterium. Sortase A has been found to be useful as a “molecular stapler”, although; in vivo, the enzyme is responsible for attaching proteins to the peptidoglycan layer of Gram-positive bacteria. It accomplishes both of these tasks by joining two proteins together via an LPXTG sorting sequence. The enzyme has been proven to be very useful in attaching any two proteins together without worrying about recombinant techniques to generate the fusion protein. The problem with this enzyme is that the catalytic diad, …
Coworking, Theodora Doulamis
Coworking, Theodora Doulamis
Theses and Dissertations
Coworking spaces have proliferated in the last several years. They reflect a change in how we work, how we learn and how we connect. Coworking is a story of change. There is a large spectrum of types of coworking spaces. Some are minimal offering only an open room with desks and chairs, while others function as mini-cities. Regardless of the size or scope of a coworking facility, what drives the success is the community. This is an exploration on how design creates community. Through my research, I discovered the importance of the 3rd place in supporting the success of a …
The Effects Of Tarsh Overexpression On Lung Carcinomas, Young Kim
The Effects Of Tarsh Overexpression On Lung Carcinomas, Young Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer arises from epithelial cells that line the air passages of the lungs. It is the second most common malignancy in the United States; trends suggest that over 228,000 new patients will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013. Due to the fact that lung cancer is highly aggressive, it has proven difficult to control. The 5-year survival rate has been shown to be only 15.9%, despite the advances made in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we are faced with the problem of finding more effective methods that allow for an earlier diagnosis and the improved treatment of …
Do You Fit The Alloy Mold? The Homogenization Of Structure And Audience In The Television Adaptations Of 'Gossip Girl,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' And 'The Vampire Diaries', Caitlin Murray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the ways in which the television adaptations of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries become more homogenized during the adaptation process, thus contributing to an implied exclusivity from which Alloy, Inc.—the media and marketing company that owns these products—might benefit. This paper points out the ways in which the three products become structurally similar to one another during the adaptation process through the implementation of soap opera conventions. An exploration of consumption and class in each of the three works reveals an emphasis on class-based exclusivity in the adaptation process. Finally, a focus on …
The Mechanotransduction Of Primary Cilia In Tumor Progression Of Lung Adenocarcinoma, Sagar Patel
The Mechanotransduction Of Primary Cilia In Tumor Progression Of Lung Adenocarcinoma, Sagar Patel
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to investigate primary cilia and their mechanotransduction role in lung adenocarcinoma tumor progression. The main focus investigated the effect of primary cilia on cell cycle progression, survival, adhesion and migration analysis of these cells and the role of sonic hedgehog signaling pathway in mechanotransduction. Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) adenocarcinoma biopsies contain more primary cilia than non-tumor lung sections. To observe the effects of primary cilia presence in lung cancer cells in-vitro, formation of primary cilia is inhibited using small interfering RNA. A549 cells with intact primary cilia observe less cell cycle progression …
The Inflammasome In Acute Myocarditis, Harsha Kannan
The Inflammasome In Acute Myocarditis, Harsha Kannan
Theses and Dissertations
Acute myocarditis is an acute inflammatory syndrome characterized by myocardial damage and dysfunction often due to a viral infection followed by a variable development over time. There are currently no specific treatments and standard treatments for heart failure are generally applied. The inflammasome is a recently identified macromolecular structure that occupies a central role in the amplification of the inflammatory response and promotion of cell death during acute and chronic infections. We hypothesized the formation of the inflammasome in acute myocarditis. To investigate, samples of patients were collected from the Cardiomyopathy Registry in Trieste, with 12 cases of biopsy-proven myocarditis …

Utilizing secondary data, this research sought to report HPV vaccination rates among a racially diverse population and to identify potential barriers to vaccination. The ACHA-NCHA survey provided a large sample size (N=68,193) in which to perform a binary logistic regression analysis. Demographic characteristics were analyzed as potential barriers to HPV vaccination. Additionally, lack of certain health behaviors were explored as potential barriers to HPV vaccination. In this study, White/non-Hispanic women had a …
Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy
Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy
Theses and Dissertations
This study intends to investigate British artist Anish Kapoor’s stylistic formation in relationship to globalization, positing its history as a multiplicity, comprised of several competing localisms, including: minimalism; the traditions of modern painting; and the artist’s own personal diasporic narrative. It will demonstrate how Kapoor is a transgressive global artist, concerned not only with rethinking the longstanding question of artistic form, but also with the enduring process central to the cultural formation of subjects. Overall, this thesis will propose that Kapoor’s art in particular can be comprehended by the special liminal position it occupies between such polarities as modern and …
Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta
Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta
Theses and Dissertations
Typically, singing training for the musical theatre student is divided into three subjects: music theory, private voice instruction and acting through song. By separating the study of the components of musical theatre performance, musical theatre programs reinforce this compartmentalization and few students are able to make connections between these components in performance. This thesis gives an account of my design of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of musical theatre, specifically a class I developed called Singing for the Actor. In this class, I focused on connecting three components of musical theatre singing: music theory, vocal production (specifically the Estill …
Query: How Does The Never To Be Differ From What Never Was?, Robert Scott Whipkey
Query: How Does The Never To Be Differ From What Never Was?, Robert Scott Whipkey
Theses and Dissertations
The feeling of a narcotic cannot be put to words, just as the sensation one receives from her or his favorite artwork is impossible to record. Equally, both these delicacies of modern existence must be sought out. The user/viewer only gets a tiny taste and must therefore keep coming back for more. Utopia may be an unrealistic construction of culture, but I would posit the idea the both narcotics and art strive to give us just that – however tiny a taste. This paper addresses the intersections of visual art, drugs, anti-hero worship and contemporary representations of Romanticism throughout the …

Theses and Dissertations
This project analyzes a database of 118 ceramic sherds that were excavated from the Late Intermediate Period site of Yanaorco, located in the Cajamarca region of the north highlands in present-day Peru, for vessel form, style, and imagery. Through the placement of these sherds within the context of inter-community feasting events that took place at Yanaorco, fineware ceramic vessels are interpreted as prestige items that were utilized by the elite to further differentiate themselves from other community citizens. By examining key examples of representational and non-representational imagery depicted on the sherds, an understanding of the social agency of the vessel …
My World Of Motherhood, Aimee Rop
My World Of Motherhood, Aimee Rop
Theses and Dissertations
Artist Statement In my artwork, I want to relay the emotional ups and downs of being a single mother. Motherhood, its challenges and rewards, is a recurring theme in my mixed media and photographic work. In family life we all experience the cycles of pain, sorrow, happiness, and tranquility. These are the moments that I want to explore and share. In my pieces, I incorporate simple, black outlined figures that contain little to no facial features, text that is hidden and broken up, and repeated drawings of entangled spirals. These outlined figures symbolize me as a woman that is facing …
The Role Of Alginate In The Inhibition Of Macrophage Phagocytosis Of Mucoid Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Warren Rowe Iii
The Role Of Alginate In The Inhibition Of Macrophage Phagocytosis Of Mucoid Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Warren Rowe Iii
Theses and Dissertations
During colonization of the cystic fibrosis airway Pseudomonas aeruginosa converts from non-mucoid to a mucoid phenotype, characterized by the production of the exopolysaccharide alginate. Alginate production has been shown to enhance survival by promoting biofilm formation, evading complement killing, and resisting phagocytosis. The mechanism by which alginate protects P. aeruginosa from phagocytosis is unclear. To investigate the role of alginate in the inhibition of phagocytosis, a human monocytic cell line (THP-1) and a murine alveolar macrophage cell line (MH-S) were used to determine the effects of alginate on macrophage binding, signaling, and phagocytosis. Phagocytosis assays using the mucoid cystic fibrosis …
Understanding The Public's Attitudes Toward Tissue Donation: A Multi-Method Approach, Lindsey Kurland
Understanding The Public's Attitudes Toward Tissue Donation: A Multi-Method Approach, Lindsey Kurland
Theses and Dissertations
The impact of deceased tissue donation and transplantation is far-reaching; however, little is known about the public’s attitudes towards tissue donation. Siminoff, Traino, and Gordon (2010) found that families’ attitudes towards tissue donation were a significant predictor of consent; specifically, families that were initially favorable towards tissue donation were more likely to donate their loved ones tissues than families that were initially unfavorable towards tissue donation. Using a qualitative coding approach and the Tripartite Model of Attitude Structure (affective, behavioral, and cognitive attitude components) as a conceptual framework, families’ expressed attitudes toward tissue donation were extracted from N=240 audiorecordings of …
