Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz
Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
It was stated years ago that physicians pour medicines about which they know little, for diseases about which they know less, into human beings about whom they know nothing. Although as a prophet this wag may have overstated the case as it concerns the therapy of urinary tract infections (UTI), the character of contemporary infectious diseases is, in part, due to the use and abuse of anti-infective agents. One has only to look at the rising incidence of gram-negative bacteremia and the emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant organisms over the past several decades to appreciate the impact physicians have made with …

Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel
Porotic Hyperostosis In The Eastern Mediterranean, J. Lawrence Angel
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Porotic hyperostosis is bone expansion caused by hypertrophy of blood-forming marrow. It usually affects the skull diploë in adults and the long bones, face, skull vault, and sometimes the trunk in children, often with some thinning and porosity in the cortex and even the formation of a double cortex (bone-in-bone) in severe infections. Excess formation of red cells in hematogenous marrow can come from sicklemia or thalassemia (especially in the homozygous form), from other hemolytic anemias including unusual blood defects like spherocytosis, and from iron deficiency anemia. Presumably hookworm, amebiasis and other dysenteries, endemic malaria, and even high-altitude anoxia can …
Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose
Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The major focus of paleopathology has been the delimiting of disease in time and space. Information about the history of specific diseases is the objective of many of these studies. While the chronological and geographical dimensions of paleopathology contribute significantly to our knowledge of disease, there are limits to this approach, which often fails to consider the interaction of biology and culture in the disease of prehistoric populations.

Vcu Today (1977-10-11)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
The Polymorphonuclear Neutrophilic Phagocyte, Gerald L. Mandell
The Polymorphonuclear Neutrophilic Phagocyte, Gerald L. Mandell
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Patients who have too few functioning mature polymorphonuclear neutrophils frequently develop fatal bacterial or fungal infections despite our best efforts to prevent and treat those infections. Recently new facets of white cell function which enable us to better understand both normal and abnormal states have been found. Several review articles about polymorphonucler neutrophils (also called neutrophils and granulocytes – the latter term includes eosinophils and basophils) have been published recently and the reader is referred to these for more comprehensive coverage of the field.

Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The existence of immunity to cancer was postulated by the eminent scientists who helped to establish the discipline of immunology. In 1907 Clowes suggested that human resistance to cancer resulted from what we today call “immune surveillance.” During the ensuing 70 years the results obtained from experimental animal cancers and human cancers have greatly influenced the palatability of tumor-immunity theories. Early optimism that immunity to cancer could be specifically induced waned and almost disappeared when it was demonstrated that the rejection of cancer transplants resulted from transplantation immunity and not tumor immunity. A sustained wave of enthusiasm for immunity to …

Bacterial Meningitis: Some Epidemiologic And Clinical Factors In Diagnosis, Vincent P. Calabrese
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In ancient times all acute delirium states were known as “phrenesis.” It was not until the 17th century that inflammations of the meninges and cerebrum were differentiated from each other. By the 19th century meningitis had been described to the extent that a number of epidemics were reported both in the United State and Europe, but it was the development of the lumbar puncture by Quincke in 1893 which opened up a new diagnostic era for the disease.
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Summary:
1. The type of animal blood used in preparing blood agar plates did not significantly affect the demonstration of hemolysis by any streptococcal species except for S.faecalis. S.faecalis more consistently displayed an alpha reaction on sheep blood agar while expressing a beta reaction on horse and rabbit blood agars.
2. A recommended scheme for identifying streptococci, adaptable to most any clinical laboratory, was developed and is outlined in Table 13.
3. S.agalactiae (group B) was the most frequent beta hemolytic streptococcal isolant. Significantly, it was the only species over-all to be recovered from every clinical source. The CAMP test …

Cutaneous Manifestations Of Venereal Disease, Charles M. Caravati Jr.
Cutaneous Manifestations Of Venereal Disease, Charles M. Caravati Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
There has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of venereal disease, and these disorders have become one of our major national health problems. It is obvious that if this chain of infection is to be broken, individuals with these diseases must be treated as early as possible in the course of the infection before there is a chance for it to spread to others. We have been implored to help find the sexual contacts of these individuals, and it is essential that we use the excellent epidemiological investigators of our health departments for this purpose.

The Documentation Of Communicable Diseases In Peruvian Mummies, Harry P. Dalton, Marvin J. Allison, Alejandro Pezzia
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Communicable disease in Egyptian mummies was documented by Ruffer and Ferguson when early in this century they reported a case of smallpox. A case of schistosomiasis was also reported by Ruffer. Various intestinal parasites have been reported from mummies, and suggestive evidence has been presented for poliomyelitis and tuberculosis. Much of this work was done at a time when good laboratory techniques were not available.

The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell
The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell
Theses and Dissertations
Arterial disease is virtually a universal entity in man. Some cultures, such as the African Bantus have very little in the way of vascular lesions, while in the United States and other industrialized nations atherosclerosis affects a large segment of the population. With this in mind it is not hard to understand why ischemia, or arteriosclerotic heart disease, is second only to cardiovascular diseases in general as the major cause of death in the United States (4, 42).
Ruffer (112) noted the presence of arterial lesions in Egyptian mummies dating back 3,400 years. The presence of atherosclerotic lesions has also …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki
Theses and Dissertations
Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. It has been suggested that the lowering of cholesterol levels will provide an effective means …
Laboratory Aspects Of Venereal Disease, Mario R. Escobar
Laboratory Aspects Of Venereal Disease, Mario R. Escobar
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Introducing the laboratory aspects of venereal diseases, I would like to define the criteria according to which certain infectious diseases are considered to be "sexually transmitted." The expression "sexually transmitted disorder" is less weighted with moral overtones than the term "venereal" and may therefore be more acceptable to both medical practitioners and the general public.
Microbial Monitoring, Harry P. Dalton
Microbial Monitoring, Harry P. Dalton
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The need for monitoring both areas for alteration in microbial flora, which may result in invasion or adverse effect on internal organs of the host, has been an accepted scientific fact of modern medicine for years. Questions remain, however, on how much monitoring needs to be done. What areas of the patients and the environment should be tested, and what are the practical uses of the results of such monitoring? Before attempting to answer these questions, let me give you an overview of how microbial monitoring has been used at the Medical College of Virginia hospitals and other institutions to …
Fetal Abnormalities Of Viral Origin, Paul D. Parkman, Harry M. Meyer Jr.
Fetal Abnormalities Of Viral Origin, Paul D. Parkman, Harry M. Meyer Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The high incidence of acute infections known to occur in pregnant women contrasts with the relative rarity of fetal damage and attests to the efficiency of the mechanisms by which the fetus is protected in utero.
