Passive Immunization During Pregnancy For Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, Giovanni Nigro, Stuart P. Adler, Renato La Torre, Al M. Best Jan 2005

Passive Immunization During Pregnancy For Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, Giovanni Nigro, Stuart P. Adler, Renato La Torre, Al M. Best

Pediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND

Currently, there is no effective intervention for a primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy.

METHODS

We studied pregnant women with a primary CMV infection. The therapy group comprised women whose amniotic fluid contained either CMV or CMV DNA and who were offered intravenous CMV hyperimmune globulin at a dose of 200 U per kilogram of maternal weight. A prevention group, consisting of women with a recent primary infection before 21 weeks' gestation or who declined amniocentesis, was offered monthly hyperimmune globulin (100 U per kilogram intravenously).

RESULTS

In the therapy group, 31 women received hyperimmune globulin, only 1 (3 …

Assessing Sensitivity To Change: Choosing The Appropriate Change Coefficient, Paul W. Stratford, Daniel L. Riddle Jan 2005

Assessing Sensitivity To Change: Choosing The Appropriate Change Coefficient, Paul W. Stratford, Daniel L. Riddle

Physical Therapy Publications

The past 20-years have seen the development and evaluation of many health status measures. Unlike the high standards demanded of those who conduct and report clinical intervention trials, the methodological rigor for studies examining the sensitivity to change of health status measures are less demanding. It is likely that the absence of a criterion standard for change in health status contributes to this shortcoming. To increase confidence in the results of these types of studies investigators have often calculated multiple change coefficients for the same patient sample.

The purpose of this report is to identify the conflict that arises when …

Variation In Periodontal Diagnosis And Treatment Planning Among Clinical Instructors, Sharon K. Lanning, Scott D. Pelok, Brent C. Willians, Philip S. Richards, David P. Sarment, Tae-Ju Oh, Laurie K. Mccauley Jan 2005

Variation In Periodontal Diagnosis And Treatment Planning Among Clinical Instructors, Sharon K. Lanning, Scott D. Pelok, Brent C. Willians, Philip S. Richards, David P. Sarment, Tae-Ju Oh, Laurie K. Mccauley

Periodontics Publications

Consistency in clinical decision making may be necessary for reliable assessment of student performance and teaching effectiveness, yet little has been done to examine variation in periodontal diagnosis and treatment planning among dental school faculty. The purpose of this investigation was to examine variation among faculty in diagnosis and management of common periodontal diseases. Twenty-seven clinical instructors (periodontists, general dentists, dental hygienists, and first- and second-year periodontal graduate students) reviewed three web-based cases and answered a brief questionnaire focusing on radiographic interpretation, periodontal diagnosis, and treatment planning. Response rates for the three cases ranged from 62 percent to 70 percent. …

Epidural Abscess Caused By Streptococcus Milleri In A Pregnant Woman, Russell Lampen, Gonzalo M. L. Bearman Jan 2005

Epidural Abscess Caused By Streptococcus Milleri In A Pregnant Woman, Russell Lampen, Gonzalo M. L. Bearman

Internal Medicine Publications

Background

Bacteria in the Streptococcus milleri group (S. anginosus, S. constellatus, and S. intermedius) are associated with bacteremia and abscess formation. While most reports of Streptococcus milleri group (SMG) infection occur in patients with underlying medical conditions, SMG infections during pregnancy have been documented. However, SMG infections in pregnant women are associated with either neonatal or maternal puerperal sepsis. Albeit rare, S. milleri spinal-epidural abscess in pregnancy has been reported, always as a complication of spinal-epidural anesthesia. We report a case of spinal-epidural abscess caused by SMG in a young, pregnant woman without an antecedent history of spinal …

Case Study For People Who Are Aging: Workworld© Choice Exploration Software, David Ruth, Mark Hill

Case Studies from Age in Action

Educational Objectives

1. To illustrate the usefulness of WorkWORLD, a software package for older Americans with disabilities who have not yet reached retirement age, to determine the financial effects of earnings and the use of work incentives associated with benefits.

2. To show how the software can be accessed and continually updated.

3. To explore the possibility of enhancing WorkWORLD to be useful for those who have reached retirement age but who desire to continue or begin working.

Male Caregivers: Breaking Through The Male Self-Sufficiency Barrier To Help Those In Need, James J. Hutchinson

Case Studies from Age in Action

Educational Objectives

1. To generate awareness of characteristics and issues specific to male caregivers;

2. To examine successful strategies for education and awareness programs that motivate male caregivers to request services when needed;

3. To identify effective services targeted to male caregivers that have been initiated by three Area Agencies on Aging that received funding from the Virginia Department for the Aging.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We measure pseudodielectric functions in the visible-deep ultraviolet spectral range of Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 (x=0.2,0.56,0.82) (PZT), Pb0.98Nb0.04 (Zr0.2Ti0.8)0.96O3, Pb0.91La0.09 (Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.98O3, and Pb0.85La0.15Ti0.96O3 films grown on platinized silicon substrates using a sol-gel method and on (0001) sapphire using a radio-frequency sputtering method. Using a parametric optical constant model, we estimate the dielectric functions(ϵ) of the perovskite oxide thin films. Taking the second derivative of the fitted layer dielectric functions and using the standard critical-point model, we determine the parameters of the critical points. In the second derivative spectra, the lowest band-gapenergy peak near 4 eVis fitted as a double peak for annealed PZTs …
