COVID-19 disrupted educational instruction which transitioned into remote learning and testing modes. Faculty adopted various platforms of remote learning, however, the students' perception of efficacy and adequacy remains unclear. Curriculum delivery transformation should be based on student feedback to align it with their needs and expectations. As remote learning evolves, it is important to identify perceptions from faculty and students. Our project might help improve and potentially enhance remote teaching and learning techniques.

The Potential Effects Of Hormonal Therapy And Stress On The Oral Health Of The Transitioning Population, Elena G. Cantwell, Devon Mcclure
Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship
Problem: In terms of healthcare, the transgender population is underserved. Unfortunately, these individuals often experience stress related to seeking preventative care and fear discrimination. These factors preventing them from seeking care, in addition to hormone therapy taken during the transition process, could have severe impacts on their dental health. The purpose of this study is to establish a link between the hormone therapy used during gender transitioning and the effect on oral health. While there is a correlation between hormone replacement therapy and clinical evidence that sex hormones can impact on periodontal tissues, few studies have linked this knowledge to …

Infection Prevention In Patients Receiving Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Through Proper Hemodialysis Line Care, Nicole Ingram, Susan Mckenna
Infection Prevention In Patients Receiving Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Through Proper Hemodialysis Line Care, Nicole Ingram, Susan Mckenna
VCU Health Nursing
The goal was to reduce Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)-related Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) rates by introducing a just-in-time re-education toolkit for proper hemodialysis (HD) line care in adult Intensive Care Units (ICU).
CRRT requires specialized expertise delivered in the ICU setting with the support of HD nurses. Problem-solving when cartridges clot or clog requires ICU nurses to return the blood and notify HD to restart therapy. Current evidence supports the use of white CurosTM caps and TegoTM connectors when deaccessing lines in order to prevent CLABSIs, air emboli, and bleeding. A learning needs assessment revealed inconsistent …

Seasonal Facilitative And Competitive Trade‐Offs Between Shrub Seedlings And Coastal Grasses, Michael N. Sinclair, Natasha N. Woods, Julie C. Zinnert
Biology Publications
Shrub expansion is occurring in grasslands globally and may be impacted by the balance of competition and facilitation with existing grasses. Along the mid‐Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the native shrub Morella cerifera (wax myrtle) is rapidly expanding and displacing other native coastal species. Recent research suggests that much of this expansion is due to warming winter temperatures, as temperatures below −15°C kill M. cerifera. The objective of this project was to understand the importance of species interactions with grasses on the growth and physiology of M. cerifera at the seedling life stage through both field and laboratory experiments. In …
Immigration Policies On Adolescent Trauma Among Mixed-Status Latinx Families: A Systematic Review, Isis Garcia-Rodriguez, Oswaldo Moreno
Immigration Policies On Adolescent Trauma Among Mixed-Status Latinx Families: A Systematic Review, Isis Garcia-Rodriguez, Oswaldo Moreno
Psychology Publications
The current policy surrounding immigration in the United States (U.S.) has sparked negative attitudes surrounding individuals that are undocumented, as well as mixed-status families.1 Latinx adolescents residing in the U.S. are already at risk for psychological (i.e., depression, stress, anxiety) and physical health problems (i.e., chronic and acute health problems),2-4 and the current political climate only exacerbates these health outcomes.5-7 These experiences are striking given that 58.9 million Latinx individuals reside in the U.S.8 Given the impact that these recent local and federal policies have on the largest minority group in the U.S., these policies may …

Introduction
Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for developing cancer. Adenocarcinomas are the most commonly observed tumors of the gastrointestinal tract whereas data on gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in IBD patients is limited. GIST is a neoplasm that originates from the interstitial cells of Cajal in the smooth muscle layers of the gastrointestinal tract. [1] The association between GIST and Crohn’s disease (CD) is debated, as the tumor inconsistently present in areas of inflammatory activity. We report an interesting case of CD maintained on Infliximab, who presented with a flare that revealed GIST in the …

Gut Microbiome And Opioid-Induced Analgesic Tolerance, Sach D. Thakker, Karan H. Muchhala
Gut Microbiome And Opioid-Induced Analgesic Tolerance, Sach D. Thakker, Karan H. Muchhala
Biology Publications
The gut microbiome plays an important role in maintaining health and homeostasis. Chronic usage of opioids leads to microbial dysbiosis in the gut. This dysbiosis leads to several severe diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Here, we discuss the literature on how opioids affect the gut-microbiome axis and how these changes alter the ability of morphine to produce analgesic tolerance. Chronic morphine exposure leads to increases in gut permeability due to disruption of tight junction proteins and increases in inflammation due to release of proinflammatory cytokines, both of which promote tolerance to morphine. Additionally, it …

When Statistical Significance Is Not Enough: Investigating Relevance, Practical Significance, And Statistical Significance, Kaveh Mohajeri, Mostafa Mesgari, Allen S. Lee
Information Systems Publications
The notions of significance and relevance have provoked much controversy and confusion among those who conduct and those who are intended to be informed by quantitative research in the information systems (IS) field. The history of quantitative research in the IS field and beyond reveals not only disputes over the adequacy of statistical significance to warrant the scientific merits of research, but also pleas for drawing attention to practical significance, as well as a lack of distinction between relevance and practical significance. This essay offers a remedial, overarching account. We establish the position that statistical significance, practical significance, and relevance …

Mohs Micrographic Surgery In A Pediatric Patient With Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Cameron Nichols, Shields W. Callahan Md
Graduate Medical Education (GME) Resident and Fellow Research Day Posters
An 11-year old boy presented with biopsy proven squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the left cheek. Pathology demonstrated moderate to well-differentiated SCC with positive deep and peripheral margins and no signs of definitive perineural invasion. Past medical history was significant for radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and stem cell transplant seven years prior for the treatment of a spinal embryonal tumor with multilayered rosettes with no signs of recurrence. He never had any direct radiation therapy to the site of his SCC. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) was ultimately selected as the treatment of choice for his SCC.
The main concern with MMS …

Hip Labral Injury Worsens After Platelet Rich Plasma Injections: A Case Report, Brennan M. Wright, Carmen Wong
Graduate Medical Education (GME) Resident and Fellow Research Day Posters
Case Description
A 47-year-old active male presented with 2.5 years of right hip pain suggestive of labral pathology. Ice, heat, celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac gel, and physical therapy provided minimal relief. A diagnostic intra-articular bupivacaine injection resolved the pain. A subsequent MR arthrogram revealed a non-displaced tear of the right anterior superior acetabular labrum.
In pursuit of conservative treatment, the patient agreed to a series of 3 right hip intra-articular PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections. When he presented for the second injection, he reported his pain had decreased by 20% and he was tolerating light running. Due to improvement in symptoms, …

Introduction
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways are associated with better postoperative recovery, however, evidence is lacking in major liver surgery, .This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an ERAS pathway in U.S. veterans undergoing major hepatectomy surgery. We hypothesized that the adoption of an ERAS pathway reduces decreased length of stay (LOS).
Methods
After approval from the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center IRB, we compared data from consecutive patients undergoing elective open hepatectomy within an ERAS pathway (January 2019-December 2019) to a previous cohort of patients before introduction of ERAS (July 2016-December 2017). One surgeon performed all …

Severe Drug-Induced Gingival Enlargement And Periodontitis: A Case Series With Clinical Presentation And Management, Janina Golob Deeb, Denver J. Lyons, Daniel M. Laskin, George R. Deeb
Periodontics Publications
Gingival enlargement (GE) is a condition in which the size of the gingiva increases in response to inflammation, systemic disease, or certain medications including anticonvulsants, calcium-channel blockers, and immunosuppressants. This report describes the management of two cases involving severe gingival enlargement related to the use of an anti-hypertensive calcium-channel blocker and an immunosuppressant. Besides taking amlodipine, one patient had undergone a heart transplantation seven years prior and has been taking two immunosuppressant drugs, mycophenolate and tacrolimus. The extent of the destruction of periodontal support, aggravated by gingival enlargement, resulted in extensive tooth loss. Periodontitis and gingival enlargement exacerbate and accelerate …

Loneliness And Sleep: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sarah C. Griffin, Allison B. Williams, Scott G. Ravyts, Samantha N. Mladen, Bruce D. Rybarczyk
Psychology Publications
Despite the mounting evidence linking loneliness with health, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain obscure. This systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between loneliness and one potential mechanism—sleep—identified 27 relevant articles. Loneliness correlated with self-reported sleep disturbance (r = .28, 95% confidence interval (.24, .33)) but not duration, across a diverse set of samples and measures. There was no evidence supporting age or gender as moderators or suggesting publication bias. The longitudinal relationship between loneliness and sleep remains unclear. Loneliness is related to sleep disturbance, but research is necessary to determine directionality, examine the influence of other factors, …

Objectives/Aims: Today the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infects nearly 14 million people each year in the United States alone. HPV is responsible for several cancers, including oropharyngeal, which is currently on the rise. Each year an estimated 53,000 cases of oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed, with 70% of the cases related to HPV. The significance of educating dental providers and patients of the correlations between HPV and oropharyngeal cancers involves increased prevention strategies in dental practices. The aim is to begin offering multi-level education to adolescents’ parent’s in routine dental care visits, in order to provide an innovative approach to reduce HPV-related …

Background and Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States. COPD is expensive to treat, whereas the quality of care is difficult to evaluate due to the high prevalence of multi-morbidity among COPD patients. In the US, the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) was initiated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to penalize hospitals for excessive 30-day readmission rates for six diseases, including COPD. This study examines the difference in 30-day readmission risk between COPD patients with and without comorbidities.
