The Role Of The Primary Care Physician, David A. Draper Jan 1979

The Role Of The Primary Care Physician, David A. Draper

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All of us at one time or another have been involved either professionally or perhaps personally with Sudden Infant Death. My first experience dates back to one of my brother’s children who was a victim of Sudden Infant Death in the 1950s. My brother and his wife had had two daughters prior to that, and this child was the male infant, the heir to the throne. The Draper clan is a very close one, and this was going to be the third generation of Thomas Frazier Draper III. The child died at three months of age, and I think that …

Panel Discussion: The Nursing Role, Ann Barr Jan 1979

Panel Discussion: The Nursing Role, Ann Barr

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I will talk about setting up a program for nursing visits to SIDS parents and its importance. The first thing the parents need to know is what their baby died of; they need to know facts about SIDS, how to relieve their guilt reactions, and a set of guidelines for grief reactions. A four-point management system has been set up by the National SIDS Foundation and includes (1) an autopsy, (2) notification of cause of death within 24 to 48 hours, (3) use of SIDS as the cause of death on the death certificate when appropriate, and (4) availability of …

[Review Of] Gretchen M. Bataille, David M. Gradwohl, And Charles L. P. Silet (Eds.), The Worlds Between Two Rivers: Perspectives On American Indians In Iowa, William Bedford Clark Jan 1979

[Review Of] Gretchen M. Bataille, David M. Gradwohl, And Charles L. P. Silet (Eds.), The Worlds Between Two Rivers: Perspectives On American Indians In Iowa, William Bedford Clark

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The presentation of symposia papers in book form poses several editorial problems, the chief of which is maintaining a unity of focus between the various offerings. With one or two notable exceptions, the papers in this collection treat aspects of the Native-American experience within the boundaries of the present state of Iowa, but, unfortunately, that rubric is too broad to provide an organizing principle definite enough to hold the book together. The result is something of a mixed bag. Although each of the papers is presented as a “chapter” and some attempt at cross-reference between individual papers is made, it …

A Network Thermodynamic Two-Port Element To Represent The Coupled Flow Of Salt And Current. Improved Alternative For The Equivalent Circuit, D. C. Mikulecky Jan 1979

A Network Thermodynamic Two-Port Element To Represent The Coupled Flow Of Salt And Current. Improved Alternative For The Equivalent Circuit, D. C. Mikulecky

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

A two-port for coupled salt and current flow is created by using the network thermodynamic approach in the same manner as that for coupled solute and volume flow (Mikulecky et al., 1977b; Mikulecky, 1977). This electrochemical two-port has distinct advantages over the equivalent circuit representation and overcomes difficulties pointed out by Finkelstein and Mauro (1963). The electrochemical two-port is used to produce a schematic diagram of the coupled flows through a tissue. The network is superimposable on the tissue morphology and preserves the physical qualities of the flows and forces in each part of an organized structure (e.g., an epithelium). …

A Network Thermodynamic Approach To Compartmental Analysis: Na+ Transients In Frog Skin, D. C. Mikulecky, E. G. Huf, S. R. Thomas Jan 1979

A Network Thermodynamic Approach To Compartmental Analysis: Na+ Transients In Frog Skin, D. C. Mikulecky, E. G. Huf, S. R. Thomas

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

We introduce a general network thermodynamic method for compartmental analysis which uses a compartmental model of sodium flows through frog skin as an illustrative example (Huf and Howell, 1974a). We use network thermodynamics (Mikulecky et al., 1977b) to formulate the problem, and a circuit simulation program (ASTEC 2, SPICE2, or PCAP) for computation. In this way, the compartment concentrations and net fluxes between compartments are readily obtained for a set of experimental conditions involving a square-wave pulse of labeled sodium at the outer surface of the skin. Qualitative features of the influx at the outer surface correlate very well with …

[Review Of] Kay Graber (Ed.), Sister To The Sioux: The Memoirs Of Elaine Goodale Eastman, 1885-91, Gretchen Bataille Jan 1979

[Review Of] Kay Graber (Ed.), Sister To The Sioux: The Memoirs Of Elaine Goodale Eastman, 1885-91, Gretchen Bataille

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Elaine Goodale Eastman was a white woman from the East who decided early in her life that her “mission” was to educate the Sioux Indians of the Dakotas. The memoirs, published in 1978, were written in the thirties from notes and diaries kept by the writer from 1885-1891. Thus, there are three distinct periods of time the contemporary reader must consider.

Asian Americans In Psychiatric Systems, Niel Tashima Jan 1979

Asian Americans In Psychiatric Systems, Niel Tashima

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Prior to the l960's, very little interest had been shown in researching patterns of American utilization of mental health facilities. The notion of culturally different patterns of psychological “normalcy” for Asian Americans as a distinct population had not been adequately explored. Although a few case studies of Asian-American patients did appear in the literature from time to time, no extensive or systematic research into the demographic and psychological characteristics of Asian-American patient populations had been presented.

The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Responses To Opiates And Other Centrally-Acting Pharmacologic Agents, Glenn Stuart Simon Jan 1979

The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Responses To Opiates And Other Centrally-Acting Pharmacologic Agents, Glenn Stuart Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people. Although diabetics can lead relatively normal lives, all treatments for the disease are symptomatic and not curative. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the sensitivity to opiates and other selected centrally-acting drugs in animals is altered by streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. A second objective was to determine which aspect of the diabetic syndrome primarily was responsible for the altered sensitivity. Other experiments were performed in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism whereby this altered sensitivity occurred.

STZ-induced diabetes or dextrose-induced transient hyperglycemia did not have a significant effect on the duration of …

Life Change Events In Patients With Minor Injuries, Janice Vandenburg Keitz Jan 1979

Life Change Events In Patients With Minor Injuries, Janice Vandenburg Keitz

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the time relationship of life change events in young adult patients with minor injuries for which medical attention was sought in an emergency department (ED). Life change events are those occurrences in life which require an alteration in a person's adaptive and coping responses to ease the discomfort associated with the change. Too much change without an increase in adaptation responses may cause loss of control. The manifestation of loss of control under evaluation in this study was the occurrence of a minor injury.

The Measurement Of Anger In Children: A Multi-Modal Approach, Edward Shirrell Eastman Jr. Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Anger In Children: A Multi-Modal Approach, Edward Shirrell Eastman Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to utilize self-report, peer-report and teacher-report techniques in measuring (reporting) anger in children; and to determine the intercorrelation between these three approaches in order to determine their relationship to one another and in turn, to assess these reporting tools. Subjects were 38 male and female emotionally disturbed children from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, a short-term residential psychiatric facility in Richmond, Virginia. There were 28 boys and 10 girls, with a mean age of approximately 11 years.

Each student was given the Children's Inventory of Anger (CIA) and the Peer-Report of Anger (PR). …

[Review Of] Jesse E. Gloster. Minority Economic, Political And Social Development, Kwang Chung Kim Jan 1979

[Review Of] Jesse E. Gloster. Minority Economic, Political And Social Development, Kwang Chung Kim

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Minority Economic, Political and Social Development is a comprehensive document on the experience of discriminated minority groups in the United States, covering a wide range of minority issues which include poverty, aging, unemployment, housing, health, financial institutions, politics, and minority experiences in professional athletics, the military, and mass media. Few other books could surpass the scope of this ambitious work.

[Review Of] Joseph Hraba. American Ethnicity, Barbara Hiura Jan 1979

[Review Of] Joseph Hraba. American Ethnicity, Barbara Hiura

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Hraba uses the social science disciplines--i.e., sociology, history, and psychology--to set the scope of his research on American ethnicity. Hraba combines the theoretical premises of assimilation, pluralism, and ethnic conflict theory as methods for Viewing ethnic group convergence to and divergence from American society. "Each theory is only a partial explanation of societal modernization and ethnic evolution . . . and together they offer a fuller understanding of ethnic evolution in the modernization process" (p. 7). Societal modernization and ethnic evolution are keys for understanding the convergence (inclusion) and divergence (exclusion) process.

[Review Of] Patricia A. Vardin And Ilene N. Brody (Eds.). Children's Rights: Contemporary Perspectives, Linda Fystrom

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In 1979, the International Year of the Child, this volume presents a telling indictment of our record in the area of children‘s rights. Authors from international and interdisciplinary perspectives indicate the tremendous gulf between the ideal and the real.

[Review Of] Roberto V. Vallangca. Pinoy: The First Wave, Masayuki Sato

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The importance of documenting “oral histories” in print has to be emphasized among all Pacific Asian American groups. Dr. Roberto Vallangca has done a superb job and should be rewarded greatly as an encouragement to others to document the personal histories of the “old timers” who immigrated to Hawaii and mainland United States before the war.

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 7th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

This paper reviews some of the most salient aspects of E. M. Rogg's (1974) seminal work, The Assimilation of Cuban Exiles; The Role of Community and Class--a sociological study of the Cuban community in the town of West New York in northeastern New Jersey. Although taking issue with some of the author's theses, this paper elaborates on other findings of the book in question by means of more recent participant-observation field research in the same neighborhood. For example, the new data confirms Rogg's proposition that the organized ethnic minority helps to direct the process of acculturation, though slowly.

A Study To Compare The Strength Changes After Training The Abductor Digiti Minimi In Young Adults And In Geriatric Adults, Timothy Lee Kauffman Jan 1979

A Study To Compare The Strength Changes After Training The Abductor Digiti Minimi In Young Adults And In Geriatric Adults, Timothy Lee Kauffman

Theses and Dissertations

A paucity of research exists in the strength training and aging literature. Hettinger (1958) reported that strength declined with age and that older persons gained less with strength training than younger persons. This study altered Hettinger's design by using a different muscle and a different strengthening routine. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of isometric strength training of the non-dominant left abductor digiti minimi muscles of young subjects and old subjects. The ten young female subjects, mean age 22.6 years, were all nursing students. The ten older female subjects, mean age 69.2 years, did not constitute …

The Invalid: A Play, Robert Blumenstein Jan 1979

The Invalid: A Play, Robert Blumenstein

Theses and Dissertations

A playwright is confronted with a barrage of problems each time he attempts to write a playscript. As each problem is either solved, eliminated, or worked out on its own, the play grows closer to its life upon the stage. In writing The Invalid, I was spared not one of the many problems a playwright faces when he writes a play. am certain that I not only encountered, but solved many of the same problems that other writers encounter, in a manner not unlike their own. In fact, in this introduction, I present a few thoughts by other playwrights who …

The Responsiveness Of Murine Tumors To Maleic Vinyl Ether, Paal Christian Klykken Jan 1979

The Responsiveness Of Murine Tumors To Maleic Vinyl Ether, Paal Christian Klykken

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were undertaken to characterize the immune status of mice bearing the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) and to maximize the cure rate of LLC and Madison l09 carcinoma (Ml09) bearing mice by employing the immunomodulator maleic vinyl ether (MVE) in combination with surgery or radiotherapy.

The pattern of immunodeficiency in mice bearing the LLC appeared to be in contrast to most studies. LLC mice with a minimal tumor burden were found to have a diminished ability to phagocytize sheep erythorcytes (SRBC) or elicit an antibody response to the same antigen. Vascular clearance and phagocytic uptake of 51Cr-labeled SRBC into …

Intravenous Infection Of Mice With Naegleria Fowleri, Richard G. May Jan 1979

Intravenous Infection Of Mice With Naegleria Fowleri, Richard G. May

Theses and Dissertations

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis is a fatal disease of man caused by the free-living ameboflagelate Naegleria fowleri. In general, the victims have been active, healthy, young adults with a recent history of swimming or other fresh water-related activity. Infection with N. fowleri is apparently by way of nasal introduction of amebae-containing water. After nasal installation, electron microscopic and histopathologic studies with experimental animals reveal that amebae reside in the olfactory mucosa and then invade and migrate through the submucosal structures into the nerve plexuses. Amebae pass through pores of the cribiform plate and into the subarachnoid space. Subsequently, amebae invade the …

Activities Of Nurse Practitioners As Identified By Medical Directors Of University Student Health Services, Candace Beaman Moore, Miriam Lee Gottlieb Jan 1979

Activities Of Nurse Practitioners As Identified By Medical Directors Of University Student Health Services, Candace Beaman Moore, Miriam Lee Gottlieb

Theses and Dissertations

University health services play a very important role in the general health, performance, and well-being of the students, the university itself, and the community. As stated by the American College Health Association, the goal of a university health service is to "promote and maintain those conditions which will permit and encourage each individual to realize optimum physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being."

University students have special health care needs such as drug and alcohol abuses, emotional problems, and gynecological, sexual, and contraceptive problems. It is the goal of the health professionals involved with students to meet those needs. Because of …
