[Review Of] James Lafayette Glenn, My Work Among The Florida Seminoles, Michael D. Green Jan 1983

[Review Of] James Lafayette Glenn, My Work Among The Florida Seminoles, Michael D. Green

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

James Lafayette Glenn's My Work among the Florida Seminoles is a memoir of his five-year tenure (1931-35) as United States agent to the Seminoles. Written in the mid-1940s as a long letter to his daughter, this document remained unpublished in the manuscript holdings of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society until it was discovered and edited by Harry A. Kersey, the leading student of recent Seminole history.

[Review Of] Ricardo L. Garcia, Teaching In A Pluralistic Society, And Donna M. Gollnick And Philip C. Chinn, Multicultural Education In A Pluralistic Society, Margaret A. Laughlin Jan 1983

[Review Of] Ricardo L. Garcia, Teaching In A Pluralistic Society, And Donna M. Gollnick And Philip C. Chinn, Multicultural Education In A Pluralistic Society, Margaret A. Laughlin

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Americans live in a pluralistic society populated by persons of different ethnic backgrounds, languages, socio-economic levels, and religious beliefs. Within our society other personal characteristics are also evident, e.g., age, sex, physical and mental abilities. Too often value-laden, distorted messages and images are conveyed about those who are not viewed as being members of mainstream America. Prejudice becomes manifest and stereotypic misinformation is used to formulate major decisions affecting the lives of human beings.

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher Jan 1983

Interactions Between Murine Peritoneal Macrophages And Naegleria Fowleri, Leigh Ann Belcher

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, we have examined the differences among Corynebacterium parvum-activated, thioglycollate-elicited, and resident macrophages from (C57BL/6 X C3H)F1 mice utilizing two microcytotoxicity assays. Macrophage and Naegleria fowleri were interchangeably employed as effector and target cells. To assess the ability of the macrophage to lyse N. fowleri, the amoebae were labeled with 5 μCi of 3H-uridine per 5 x 10^5 cells for 18 h prior to co-culturing with adherent macrophage monolayers. Although the macrophage-induced lysis was density and time dependent, C. parvum macrophages consistently demonstrated an increased cytotoxic response to N. fowleri after 24 h co-incubation at a 10:1 …

A Nutritional And Morphological Study Of Two Cyanobacteria Free Azolla Ferns, Michael Paul Bonner Jan 1983

A Nutritional And Morphological Study Of Two Cyanobacteria Free Azolla Ferns, Michael Paul Bonner

Theses and Dissertations

The symbiotic association between the aquatic water fern Azolla and its symbiont, Anabaena azollae Straus. has been extensively studied in the past ten years. The cyanobacteria has received much of the attention due to its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen while the fern free of the cyanobiont has been somewhat neglected. The purpose of this research was to determine the nutritional requirements of the cyanobacteria free (CBF) ferns and study the morphology of the leaves and branches of these CBF ferns.

Azolla filiculoides and Azolla pinnata were freed of the cyanobiont using the surface sterilization technique adopted from Duckett, et …

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani Jan 1983

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani

Theses and Dissertations

During the past few decades, analogs of purine nucleosides have been described that are modified either in the heterocyclic base, sugar moiety or both, and many of these modified nucleosides display antiviral and/or antineoplastic activity. The Class II mesoionic purinones are isosteric with their non~mesoionic purinone counterparts. It is conceivable that the mesoionic purinone nucleosides might constitute an entirely novel class of modified nucleosides with potential chemotherapeutic activity. That the mesoionic heterobases are bioisosteric as well as isosteric with non-mesoionic purinones was realized by demonstrating that certain mesoionic xanthine derivatives, such as Anhydro-8-ethylw-5-hydroxy-7-oxo-l,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide and Anhydro-6-p-chlorobenzyl-8-ethyl-5-hydroxy-7-oxo—l,3,4—thiadiazolo [3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide were comparable …

The Relationship Of Sex Role Self Concept And Role Conflict In Female Nursing Administrators, Charlotte B. Hoelzel Jan 1983

The Relationship Of Sex Role Self Concept And Role Conflict In Female Nursing Administrators, Charlotte B. Hoelzel

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between the sex role self concept of female nursing administrators and the role conflict they experienced. The correlation of age. education and experience with sex role self concept and role conflict was examined. This was a descriptive survey with a purposive probability sample of 126 subjects from three mid-Atlantic states. A mail survey resulted in a useful return of 88 questionnaires, including 81 females.

The Bem Sex Role Inventory was utilized to measure sex role self concept; masculinity and femininity are viewed as two independent dimensions present in every individual. Role conflict was measured by …

Poe Per Se, Robert Williamson Storrs Iv Jan 1983

Poe Per Se, Robert Williamson Storrs Iv

Theses and Dissertations

There are four elements involved in this production of Poe per se which make it interesting and suitable as a thesis: the actor, the subject, the format, and the audience. I will discuss the problems posed by each and the methods of attack I will pursue to those problems. I will then describe the evolution of the script from research through performance. My conclusion will be an assessment of the success of the script in solving my acting problems.

[Review Of] Carmelo Mesa-Lago, The Economy Of Socialist Cuba: A Two-Decade Appraisal, Bernard E. Segal Jan 1983

[Review Of] Carmelo Mesa-Lago, The Economy Of Socialist Cuba: A Two-Decade Appraisal, Bernard E. Segal

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

It's not unusual for partisans of opposing viewpoints about Cuba to spark each other to flaming argument, while those who prefer less heat and more light can easily find adventure enough just in following the course of the Western Hemisphere's most important social experiment since the Mexican Revolution. Shouldn't a book about twenty years of post-revolutionary Cuba be exciting, especially when it comes to us from Carmelo Mesa-Lago, Cuban native, an early supporter of the revolution and also an early emigre to the United States, and now, as Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, one of only a …

[Review Of] Joy Hendry, Marriage In Changing Japan: Community And Society, Lyle Koehler Jan 1983

[Review Of] Joy Hendry, Marriage In Changing Japan: Community And Society, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Joy Hendry uses a social anthropological examination of one community, the village of Kurotsuchi on southerly Kyushu Island, to illuminate the pivotal role of marriage in Japanese society. Marriage from pre-Meiji times to the present, she points out, has been crucial to the continuation of the ie, that union of the genealogical family and household/property. Marriage establishes the house head as an integral member of the village associations for governance, tax collection, care of the shrines, road building, and mutual aid. Moreover, it brings together Shintoism and Buddhism in a harmonious blending of rituals concerning birth and death.

[Review Of] Virginia Huffer, The Sweetness Of The Fig: Aboriginal Women In Transition, Lyle Koehler Jan 1983

[Review Of] Virginia Huffer, The Sweetness Of The Fig: Aboriginal Women In Transition, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

During 1970 and 1973, University of Maryland professor of psychiatry Virginia Huffer spent some time with the women of the Lardil and Kaiadilt tribes who live on Mornington Island in northern Australia's Gulf of Carpenteria [Carpentaria]. Forced to accommodate increasingly to Western ways, these women struggle to maintain traditional linkages while they undergo modern change. This conflict between the past and the future, as well as the everyday realities of their existence, are presented through Huffer's psychobiographical lens, primarily through the intervention and words of her chief informant, Elsie Roughsey, a "cooperative, friendly, generous, and intelligent" Lardil woman who is, …

Abstracts From The Eleventh Annual Conference On Ethnic Minority Studies, 1983, Ontario, California

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

We asked discussants for the 1983 Conference to summarize their responses to the papers in their sessions, and Stewart Rodnon of Rider College provided a statement which comments specifically on the session for which he was discussant and summarizes the significance of many of the papers delivered at the 1983 Conference. His comments serve as a meaningful preface to these abstracts.

Translation Of The Tibia During Isometric Contraction Of The Quadriceps, Charles V. Connors Jan 1983

Translation Of The Tibia During Isometric Contraction Of The Quadriceps, Charles V. Connors

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine in normal knees, and in knees with anterior cruciate ligament absence, what effect maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the quadriceps has on translation of the tibia on the femur. Ten subjects with bilaterally normal knees, and nine subjects with one normal knee and the contralateral knee having an arthroscopic finding of absent anterior cruciate ligament were tested. Tibial translation was measured with a dial indicator at 15, 45 and 60 degrees of knee flexion. There was a measurable anterior translation of the tibia in all knees. An analysis of variance with post …

Differences In The Maternal Feeding Choice And The Perceived Locus Of Control, Glenda E. Stephan Jan 1983

Differences In The Maternal Feeding Choice And The Perceived Locus Of Control, Glenda E. Stephan

Theses and Dissertations

The research question for this descriptive investigation was: Does a difference exist between the maternal feeding choice and the perceived locus of control? The investigation was conducted from September 15, 1982 until October 29, 1982 in a privately owned community hospital in Southeastern United States. Two randomly selected days per week were used for data collection.

The sample consisted of fifty Caucasian women between the ages of eighteen and thirty-four who had delivered a normal, viable, and stable infant within the past twenty-four to seventy-two hours. The sample consisted of twenty-six breast feeding and twenty-four formula feeding women.

The subjects …
