Critique [Of Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s By Linda M.C. Abbott], Cecilia E. Dawkins
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Abbott's presentation should be of critical concern for educators and practitioners who prepare others to deliver psychological services to ethnic minority clients. A strong point of the article is the description of a serious problem in many educational programs which fail to adequately prepare psychologists to work among a variety of ethnic groups. Equally significant, the author provides pragmatic recommendations and strategies for addressing the concerns which emerge from a theoretical framework.

Perception And Power Through Naming: Characters In Search Of Self In The Fiction Of Toni Morrison, Linda Buck Myers
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Humpty Dumpty was correct to see the important connection between language and power; and if Lewis Carroll had developed this discussion further, he might have had his characters comment as well on the interrelationship between language and thought, language and culture, and language and social change. While linguists and anthropologists continue the difficult debate about whether language is culture or is merely "related" to culture, and while sociolinguists and psychologists question the effects of language on society and on the psyche, American blacks and women understand all too well that "He is master who can define,"[1] and that the process …

Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Alice Deck
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
After a lengthy description of the various facets of Haudosaunee ritual, Kristin Herzog makes some interesting statements on the parallels between our modem day social arguments and those which plagued them centuries ago. The unique feature of Haudosaunec social organization is its systematic balance of power between the sexes. Although it is doubtful that American women who are currently engaged in a struggle for political and social power will achieve quite the same degree of equity, just studying a society in which such a balance was achieved is helpful for those in the process of defining women's goals and objectives.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The United States has a poor record in meeting the mental health needs of its minority populations. By focusing on individual pathology and relying on the white male as norm, practitioners have provided an ethnocentric and ineffective means of treating their culturally diverse clients. No longer can mental health problems be regarded only in terms of disabling mental illnesses and identified psychiatric disorders. They must also embody harm to mental health linked with perpetual poverty and unemployment and the institutionalized discrimination that happens on the basis of race or ethnicity, age, sex, social class, and mental or physical handicap. In …

[Review Of] Roger Mais. Black Lightening, Anne E. Freitas
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Upon first opening Black Lightning, the reader is surprised to find a fifteen-page introduction to a 136-page novel. Suspicions arise that here is a story that does not speak for itself! Careful examination reveals the introduction to be a scholarly, thorough (if a bit repetitious) review of the novel by Jean D'Costa of Hamilton College in New York. First published in 1955 (the same year Mais died at the age of fifty), Black Lightning was published again in 1983 as part of the Caribbean Writers Series with the introduction by D'Costa included. After reading the novel, one suspects that the …

[Review Of] Rose Basile Green. Songs Of Ourselves, Maxine S. Seller
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
"The time has come to be both joyous and lyrical about the particular exhilaration in the experience of the American immigrants and their descendents," writes Rose Basile Green in the introduction of this volume of poetry. "In lifting harmonized voices, the people of this nation sing in a symphony of one theme-we are all Americans" (4).

[Review Of] The People Of The 'Ksan. Gathering What The Great Nature Provided: Food Traditions Of The Gitskan, Caroline Shugart
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Gathering What the Great Nature Provided is a book about the Gitskan Indian tribe in North Central British Columbia living on the banks of the Skenna River. The book resulted from a project by ninety members of the tribe whose purpose was to document their past for themselves and future generations. This collective authorship shows the commitment and dedication of the people to the goal. Elders were questioned and memories strained to remember the distant past. Their culture is conveyed in a rich oral tradition. The writing was difficult and tedious, accomplished by long hours of interviewing and transcription of …
Unidirectional Calcium And Nucleotide Fluxes In Sarcoplasmic Reticulum. I. Interpretation Of Flux Ratios For Different Reaction Schemes, J. J. Feher
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
The relation between unidirectional calcium and nucleotide fluxes was examined for different ATPase reaction schemes of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The schemes considered differed in the order of sorption and desorption of calcium, ATP, and ADP. The results suggest that the theoretical relation between calcium and nucleotide fluxes depends on the reaction scheme and that experimental measurements can distinguish among them. The results obtained are generally valid and do not depend on assumptions of equilibrium or pseudoequilibrium between intermediate states of the pump.

Potential And K+ Activity In Skinned Muscle Fibers. Evidence Against A Simple Donnan Equilibrium, R.E. Godt, C.M. Baumgarten
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
ABSTRACT
It has been suggested that potentials measured with conventional microelectrodes in chemically or mechanically skinned muscle fibers arise from a Donnan equilibrium due to myofilament fixed charges. This hypothesis was tested in mechanically skinned frog (Rana pipiens) semitendinosus fibers by measuring the distribution potential (Ed) between fiber and bath with 3 M KCI-filled microelectrodes and the K+ activity gradient (a'K/a) with K+ ion-selective microelectrodes (KISE). If skinned fibers are a Donnan system, Ed should become more positive as pH is decreased, altering the fixed charge on the myofilaments. Consistent with this expectation, Ed was -4.4, -0.6, and +4.8 mV …

Undirectional Calcium And Nucleotide Fluxes In Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum. Ii. Experimental Results, J. J. Feher, F. N. Briggs
Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations
Unidirectional calcium influx and efflux were evaluated in cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) by 45Ca-"0Ca exchange at steady state calcium uptake in the absence of calcium precipitating anions. Calcium efflux was partitioned into a pump-mediated efflux and a parallel passive efflux by separately measuring passive efflux referable to the steady state. Unidirectional and net ATP-ADP fluxes were measured using [3H]-ATP -- ADP and [3H]- ADP -- ATP exchanges. Methods are presented that take into account changing specific activities and sizes of the nucleotide pools during the measurement of nucleotide fluxes. The contribution of competent and incompetent vesicles to the unidirectional and …
Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog
Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The poem prefaces Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony, the story of a young American Indian who regains the wholeness and meaning of his life by rediscovering his ancient tribal roots and rituals.[1] It is a story of the American Southwest, especially the Pueblo-Laguna people. Anyone even vaguely familiar with American Indian culture knows that the groups were originally as different from each other as modern-day Swedes are from Albanians or Catalans, if not more so. There were more than 2,000 independent culture groups in Columbus's time, and they spoke 500 different languages belonging to fifty distinct language groups, some as …

Effects Of N-Substituents On The Polymerization Properties Of Maleimide, Dilip R. Abayasekara
Effects Of N-Substituents On The Polymerization Properties Of Maleimide, Dilip R. Abayasekara
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of the amide function and the carbethoxy function on the polymerization properties of maleimide are reported. The effects of these functions on homopolymerization and copolymerization (with styrene) were examined. These electron-withdrawing groups appeared to decrease the rate of homopolymerization and increase the rate of copolymerization.
N-carbamylmaleimide and N-carbethoxymaleimide were copolymerized with styrene in 1,4 -dioxane at 60.0° C at different feed ratios to high conversion. Copolymer composition, determined by elemental analysis and 1H NMR, indicated that while 1:1 copolymers were obtained with an equimolar feed ratio, the two systems were not alternating. It is of note that the …

National Certification As A Performance Measure: Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, 1977-1982, Barbara Hall Dunn
Theses and Dissertations
This research involved an analysis of data for 3,387 candidates who took the National Qualifying Examination for pediatric nurse practitioners/associates between 1977 and 1982. Those data were available from the National Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Associates, which administers the examination, and its testing agency, the National Board of Medical Examiners. Included in the data were sociodemographic characteristics of examinees, characteristics of their nurse practitioner educational programs, and their composite examination scores.
The purpose of the research was to determine the ability of these sociodemographic and educational program variables to predict examination performance. Sociodemographic variables included: examinee age; highest …

Critique [Of Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual By Kristin Herzog], Karl J. Reinhardt
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The value of Herzog's study, in addition to the factual information presented, is a tragic reminder of two interrelated truths: 1) by studying history we could learn how to make a better world in which to live; and, 2) we do not learn from history. The women's movement of recent years has two aspects which do not, for all times, go together. One moving force in its genesis is the demand that physical and emotional abuse and misuse of women by men cease. The other, not necessarily related to the first, is that of equal status, which includes equal access …

The Lone Ranger Lied: Tonto Wasn't Real, Lee Hadley
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whenever Hadley Irwin speaks to school children or to adults, for that matter, someone always asks, "Did the things in the book really happen to you? Are the characters in your books real people?" Writing is full of bits and pieces of the past, but what goes on paper is an amalgam of thousands of things, consciously and unconsciously remembered-experiences, overheard conversations, stories, imagined events. For a child, at least this writer as a child, all things had equal validity; all were equally true, even though she finally learned that growing up was a mixture of reality and myth.

In an attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions of the 1984 Conference, we asked the Chairs to assemble abstracts and discussant comments for their sessions. Although we are pleased with a response greater than in 1983, we are aiming for one hundred percent in 1985.
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Psychological services, as a part of the health-care system, have been "embedded in specific configurations of cultural meanings and social relationships,"[1] and the role of patients and healers cannot be understood apart from that context. This article explores the failure of psychology to effectively address the inhibiting impact of racism on human development, and it suggests a corrective agenda for the training of socially responsive and responsible psychologists, an agenda derived from the literacy education model of Paulo Freire.

[Review Of] Joseph Bruchac, Ed. Breaking Silence: An Anthology Of Contemporary Asian American Poets, James B. Irby
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Bruchac has compiled an anthology of contemporary Amerasian poets who speak in clear and melodious voices. These poets of Hawaiian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino backgrounds present and affirm fresh ideas and viewpoints in poetic form. They offer an understanding of their backgrounds through variant ideas. Each one captures some sense of her or his background culture and shows how their individual lives have been affected by it.
