VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

CyanoNews
CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

Clinical Findings In Four Children With Biotinidase Deficiency Detected Through A Statewide Neonatal Screening Program, Barry Wolf, Gregory S. Heard, Linda G. Jefferson, Virginia K. Proud, Walter E. Nance, Karen A. Weissbecker
Human and Molecular Genetics Publications
Four children with biotinidase deficiency were identified during the first year of a neonatal screening program for this disease in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Two unrelated probands were identified among the 81,243 newborn infants who were screened. In addition, two siblings of one of these infants were found to be affected. Both probands had mild neurologic symptoms at two and four months, respectively, and the two older children had more severe neurologic abnormalities, cutaneous findings, and developmental delay at two and three years of age. However, none of the affected children had acute metabolic decompensation. Previous studies have shown that …

Publications from the Office of the Dean
The pharmacokinetics and protein binding of ceforanide were studied in 15 patients undergoing cholecystectomies. Each patient received ceforanide (20 mg/kg) intravenously on arrival in the operating room, after which serial blood samples were collected during the elimination phase for determination of total and free ceforanide concentrations in the serum. A high-pressure liquid chromatography assay was used, with a centrifugal filtration system for free-drug determinations. Serum concentration data for each individual were subjected to linear regression to determine the elimination rate constants (total and free drug), volumes of distribution, and systemic clearances. The mean elimination rate constants were 0.41 and 0.50 …

Critique [Of Chicano Ethnicity And Aging By Marvin A. Lewis], Ron Striano
Critique [Of Chicano Ethnicity And Aging By Marvin A. Lewis], Ron Striano
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Art serves the societal functions of recording, interpreting and predicting. Here, analysis of popular archetypes in Chicano fiction and poetry are used to illustrate cultural values toward the elderly and conflicts of values between generations of Chicanos. This leads to an examination of how Chicano values differ from Anglo-American values toward the elderly. The author demonstrates the problems of acculturation, blending into and enriching another culture while retaining a sense of one's own culture, versus assimilation, abandoning one's own heritage and taking on the values of another culture. In the latter, upward mobility striving by younger Chicanos creates a chasm …

A.K.A. Pablo: Mexican American Images For Television, Norman L. Friedman
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The study of "minority group images in mass media" has been of considerable interest both to humanities and social science writers in the ethnic and media fields. Most investigations have focused upon the descriptive content of the minority portrayals, though a few have also dealt with related aspects of minority group reactions to images. Among the large volume of varied writings have been those which have considered minority group images in films, [1] images of Asian Americans in print and electronic media, [2] dissections of single television shows about minorities, [3] and responses of minority audiences and media critics to …
Depictions Of Elderly Blacks In American Literature, Alice A. Deck
Depictions Of Elderly Blacks In American Literature, Alice A. Deck
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Portraits of elderly Afroamerican men and women abound in American literature and vary from stories which present a mythic primordial character who symbolizes emotional stability, experiential wisdom and a community's cultural and historical heritage, to works in slice-of-life realistic style which dramatize the social and psychological conditions of aged blacks. Included in this second category are works which show the confrontation between old and new social standards. Coupled with this range of portraits is a variety of attitudes toward elderly blacks.
Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal
Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal
Theses and Dissertations
Nine lateral rectus motoneurons of the principal abducens nucleus, intracellularly stained with HRP, were morphometrically analyzed by light microscopy using a new method for determining motoneuron size. Particular emphasis was placed on devising a method of estimating total dendrite size from the proximal dendritic diameter alone.
The dendrites of these cells were divided into three types. One type, the microdendrites, had a consistent diameter of l micrometer, variable but short lengths, and added very little to the overall cell size. The majority of the dendrites on these cells (83) were standard in appearance but they could be separated into two …

Puerto Ricans have been writing about their experiences in the mainland for a very long time. At the beginning, the majority of the texts were written in Spanish by Puerto Rican writers residing in this country or by Puerto Rican writers who lived here for periods of time. A careful study of the works published about the life of Puerto Ricans in the mainland shows that they were written in prose.

FEMINIZING tumors of the adrenal cortex are associated with symptoms that presumably reflect the combined effects of estrogen excess and androgen deficiency — gynecomastia, diminished libido, attenuated potency, and testicular and prostatic atrophy.1 2 3 4 5 Although such tumors are extremely rare, they provide a unique opportunity to appraise the nature of endogenous estrogen action on the gonadal axis in men. In principle, the pathophysiologic effects of estrogen hypersecretion could be expressed at the level of either the Leydig cell or the hypothalamic–pituitary axis (or both), with consequent suppression of androgen production. In the present studies, we investigated …

Evaluation Of Analytical, Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Methods For The Study Of Digoxin, Santosh John Vetticaden
Evaluation Of Analytical, Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Methods For The Study Of Digoxin, Santosh John Vetticaden
Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of the research was to investigate the pharmacodynamics of digoxin in dogs. Initially an assay specific for digoxin in the presence of its major metabolites, viz., digoxigenin, digoxigenin mono-digitoxoside, digoxigenin bis-digitoxoside and dihydrodigoxin was developed using HPLC-RIA. Methodology for non-invasive measurement of left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and other systolic time intervals (STI) in beagle dogs were developed. This involved surgery for exteriorization of the carotid artery in the dogs and subsequent measurements of LVET and STI after recovery. STI, heart rate (HR) and digoxin levels were monitored in normal beagle dogs administered 0.05 mg/kg or 0.025 …

Chemical Studies On Oxomolybdenum(Vi,Iv) Complexes As Bioinorganic Models For The Molybdenum Oxidases, James Thomas Lyon Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis, characterization, and chemical properties of Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSP) and Mo(VI)o2(5-X-SSE), (5-X- SSP2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)benzenethiolate; 5-X- SSE2- = 2-((5-X-salicylidene)amino)ethanethiolate; X = Br, Cl, H, CH3O), which contain tridentate (ONS) Schiff base ligands is described. The chemical properties of these molybdenum complexes are compared with those which possess tridentate (ONO) Schiff base ligands. Cyclic voltammetry was used to obtain cathodic reduction potentials (EPC) for the quasi-reversible reduction of the cis-dioxomolybdenum (VI) complexes. Although the reductions are quasi-reversible, trends are observed in EPC both within series and when different series are …

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) upon thermoregulation and respiration. Eight adult males whose ages ranged from 19 to 33 years were asked to engage in this study. The respiratory parameters included oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory quotient, minute ventilation, and breathing frequency. The thermoregulatory parameters included rectal temperatures and total skin temperatures. Before experimentation commenced, each subject underwent a maximum oxygen consumption test (VO2 max) to determine 60% of their VO2 max. Each of the eight subjects walked at 60% of their VO2 max up an appropriate …
The Incidence Of Postoperative Retching And Vomiting In The Adult Patient Undergoing Abdominal Surgery Following Intraoperative Administration Of Droperidol, Gary L. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The complication of postoperative nausea and vomiting is still one of the most common today. The potential for secondary complications associated with retching and vomiting such as aspiration pneumonitis strain of suture line with possible hemorrhage, and potential fluid and electrolyte imbalance makes prevention of retching and vomiting a primary concern in the management of the postoperative patient.
The use of antiemetic drugs to prevent or control postoperative nausea and vomiting is a long-standing practice. Droperidol, an antiemetic, routinely used since being introduced in 1963, has been found to be successful in treating postoperative nausea and vomiting. This study examines …

Alterations In Blood-Brain Barrier Function Following Acute Hypertension: Comparison Of The Blood-To-Brain Transfer Of Horseradish Peroxidase With That Of Alpha-Aminoisobutyric Acid, Mary Draper Bennett Ellison
Theses and Dissertations
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) selectively restricts the blood-to-brain passage of many solutes owing to unique properties of cerebrovascular endothelial cell membranes. This selective blood/brain interface participates in the maintenance of brain homeostasis by controlling nutrient, gas, and fluid exchange necessary for brain function. Normal BBB function can be altered under various pathological and experimental conditions, allowing the transfer into brain parenchyma of blood-borne solutes normally excluded. To date, experimental study of the BBB has been accomplished primarily through the use of two different methodological approaches. Some investigators have focused on the barrier's morphological correlates and its morphopathological alteration under various …
