[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop Jan 1987

[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

There are those who have heralded the 1980s as "The Decade of the Italian American" as many of the 20 million Americans of Italian descent achieve increasing prominence in politics, business, education and the arts. This new role assumed by Americans of immigrant stock has necessitated revised patterns of investigation addressing the impact of socio-economic mobility, the effects of transmigration and the growing phenomenon of exogenous marriage. For example, of the Italian American women born since 1950, between two-thirds and three-quarters have married outside the ethnic group. Finally, the size and multigenerational sampling provided by the Italian American population invites …

From The Ground Up: Multiethnic Literature In The Humanities Curriculum, Margaret Bedrosian Jan 1987

From The Ground Up: Multiethnic Literature In The Humanities Curriculum, Margaret Bedrosian

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Spiritual dismemberment, which many associate with the plight of disinherited Native Americans, has dislocated millions of others in this country as well. Teaching multi-ethnic literature, I note in particular streams of students who like the narrator of Oritz's poem are lonely for an authentic connection to a personal history. Throughout the term, they read selections which extol or dramatize the palpable struggles of characters who have a strong bond with ethnic traditions. They attend class surrounded by identifiable, certifiable ethnics. They listen to the instructor hold forth on the apocalyptic possibilities open to any who have access to these worldviews. …

[Review Of] Dennis J. Starr. The Italians Of New Jersey: A Historical Introduction And Bibliography, Lucia C. Birnbaum Jan 1987

[Review Of] Dennis J. Starr. The Italians Of New Jersey: A Historical Introduction And Bibliography, Lucia C. Birnbaum

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume does not aim to be a definitive history of the Italians of New Jersey, but it is an excellent model of regionally grounded scholarship, offering not only the story of one state, but an excellent synthesis of the scholarship on the Italian role in that "greatest migration of peoples in history" to the new world at the end of the nineteenth century. "From 1891 to 1915 more Italians entered the United States than did immigrants from any other country."

[Review Of] S. J. Tambiah. Sri Lanka: Ethnic Fratricide And The Dismantling Of Democracy, Proshanta K. Nandi Jan 1987

[Review Of] S. J. Tambiah. Sri Lanka: Ethnic Fratricide And The Dismantling Of Democracy, Proshanta K. Nandi

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Is it possible to analyze a political dilemma as convoluted and desperate as the turmoil existing today between the Sinhalese Buddhists and Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka that has cost nearly 5,000 lives during the last five years alone? S. J. Tambiah succeeds most admirably in offering a clear assessment of historical, sociological, and other factors contributing to the current crisis in Sri Lanka. This is no mean feat considering that Tambiah is not a dispassionate observer but rather, as a Tamil, has experienced first-hand the effects of the increasing polarization of the two ethnic groups.

[Review Of] Wen-Shing Tseng And David Y. H. Wu, Eds. Chinese Culture And Mental Health, Ella P. Lacey Jan 1987

[Review Of] Wen-Shing Tseng And David Y. H. Wu, Eds. Chinese Culture And Mental Health, Ella P. Lacey

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Tseng and Wu have performed a creditable task in editing this book that involved twenty-nine delegates from the Conference on Chinese Culture and Mental Health (Hawaii, 1982). Their purpose was to have "insiders" produce a definitive work on the Chinese culture and its interaction with the mental component of health. The Chinese are described in the preface as "having a history of at least 5000 years of civilization," with China comprising "... one quarter of the world's people," but having people of the Chinese culture who live in various geographical areas, including "... Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, …

[Review Of] Paul Espinoza, Producer. The Lemon Grove Incident, Freddy Dean Jan 1987

[Review Of] Paul Espinoza, Producer. The Lemon Grove Incident, Freddy Dean

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The Lemon Grove Incident is a compelling and informative presentation of how the members of the local school board in Lemon Grove, California, attempted to implement de jure segregation of American citizens of Mexican American descent in 1930. The narratives of actual participants -- victims in the incident -- enhance the authenticity of the presentation and guide the viewer through the convoluted Machiavellianism of the Lemon Grove School Board and its supporting satellites, the Lemon Grove Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and Chamber of Commerce as well as the federal government.

[Review Of] Joe R. Feagin And Clairece Booher Feagin. Discrimination American Style: Institutional Racism And Sexism, 2nd Ed., Margaret A. Laughlin Jan 1987

[Review Of] Joe R. Feagin And Clairece Booher Feagin. Discrimination American Style: Institutional Racism And Sexism, 2nd Ed., Margaret A. Laughlin

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Discrimination American Style seeks to answer two basic questions: "Why do women, blacks, and other minorities experience discrimination in the United States?" and "What types of discriminatory behaviors continue in practice today?" Feagin and Feagin attempt to integrate existing research on issues of racism and sexism which focuses on the overall theme of institutional discrimination. They examine similarities and differences between racist and sexist behaviors and practices in order to determine whether or not discrimination exists, and if so, to what degree. They reject the popular belief that prejudice and bigotry are causes of discrimination and argue that practices which …

Comparison Of Virulent And Avirulent Legionella Pneumophila And Evaluation Of Fish As A Potential Environmental Reservoir/Experimental Model, Sandra Reading Sommer Jan 1987

Comparison Of Virulent And Avirulent Legionella Pneumophila And Evaluation Of Fish As A Potential Environmental Reservoir/Experimental Model, Sandra Reading Sommer

Theses and Dissertations

Legionella pneumophila was first recognized as a cause of human pneumonia in 1976 . Since then, much has been learned about the microbiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of this organism. The features which permit one strain but not another to invade human lung tissue and produce disease remain incompletely understood. This study e valuated several attributes of a virulent and an avirulent strain of L. pneumophila in an attempt to identify characteristics which would distinguish the two. Evaluation of a new medium, buffered egg yolk agar, showed that virulence was maintained after 26 passages, which was the same as the buffered …

Abstracts From The Fifteenth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Each year the conference organizers attempt to provide a complete overview of the Annual Conference by publishing abstracts of the papers and presentations as well as the comments provided by the respondents to each session. Although we usually fail to get a one hundred percent response, the following abstracts and comments provide an excellent representation of the variety of responses to the conference theme, "Ethnicity: Propaganda, Persuasion, and Political Economy." These statements reflect both pedagogical and theoretical responses to the issues, suggesting directions both for teaching and further research on the topics.

The Effect Of Utilization Controls On Hmo Enrollees' Health, Satisfaction With Care, And Disenrollment, Barbara Stewart Brown Jan 1987

The Effect Of Utilization Controls On Hmo Enrollees' Health, Satisfaction With Care, And Disenrollment, Barbara Stewart Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this prospective study is to examine the effects of differences in utilization controls on HMO enrollees' health, satisfaction with quality of care and access, and disenrollment. Previous studies of alternative care systems have shown that they are able to decrease costs (Luft, 1981; Anderson, Herald, Butler, Kohrman, & Morrison, 1985), but have not examined the organizational structure within the organization that oversees utilization. No prior studies have examined the effects of different types and degrees of utilization controls on the health, satisfaction, and access of enrollees.

For this investigation, Williamson's (1975) theory of organizations, transaction costs economics, …

Effects Of Hematocrit Variations On Microcirculatory Hemodynamics And Oxygen Transport In Hamster Striated Muscle, Lih Kuo Jan 1987

Effects Of Hematocrit Variations On Microcirculatory Hemodynamics And Oxygen Transport In Hamster Striated Muscle, Lih Kuo

Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were performed to investigate the influence of isovolemic hemodilution and hemoconcentration on microcirculatory hemodynamics and oxygen transport in the hamster cheek pouch retractor muscle. Measurements of red blood cell velocity, microvessel hematocrit, vessel diameter, segment length (L), hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) and longitudinal SO2 gradient (ΔSO2/L) were made in four arteriolar branching orders before and after isovolemic exchange with plasma (hemodilution) or packed red blood cells (hemoconcentration).

In the study of hemodilution, systemic hematocrit was reduced from 52 to 33% in 23 hamsters. This degree of hemodilution resulted in an average decrease in microcirculatory …

Extent Of Participation In The Strategic Planning Process By Executive Nurses In Virginia's Acute Care Hospital, Mary R. Pippin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which executive nurses participate in strategic planning for their institutions, and the extent to which these executive nurses utilize the strategic planning process for their nursing departments. The effect of ownership, size, and educational level of the executive nurse on the extent of participation in institutional strategic planning and the utilization of the strategic planning process for their nursing departments was also examined.

The population of the study included all executive nurses employed in short-term, nonmiltary, Virginia hospitals, which were members of the Virginia Hospital Association. Questionnaires were mailed to …

[Review Of] Paul J. Strand And Woodrow Jones, Jr. Indochinese Refugees In America: Problems Of Adaptation And Assimilation, Russell Endo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Since the fall of Saigon in 1975, over three-quarters of a million Indochinese refugees have come to the United States. Numerous studies have been conducted on their adjustment to American society and on resettlement policies and programs. This book covers these very topics and is organized into three sections. The first part provides some background on the cultures and political histories of the major Indochinese groups and on federal and state policies and programs. The second investigates problems experienced by the Indochinese, particularly with regard to their health, education, language abilities, and employment and is based on a 1981 needs …

Implications For Survival: Coping Strategies Of The Women In Alice Walker's Novels, Robbie Jean Walker Jan 1987

Implications For Survival: Coping Strategies Of The Women In Alice Walker's Novels, Robbie Jean Walker

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Various strategies for coping have surfaced in the uncertain, arduous, and frequently faltering struggle by black Americans for equality of opportunity, coping strategies characterized variously as carefully considered judgments or mere reactions devoid of ideological commitment. These efforts have engaged the attention of historians, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, and other scholars motivated by a perceived obligation to explicate the nature of the struggle and articulate viable modes for ameliorating the effects of discrimination. Literary artists have also manifested a similar interest by using the medium of imaginative literature to illuminate and dramatize the realities of the historical situation.

The Challenges And Limitations Of Conducting Research Among The Old Order Amish, Jerry Savells, Thomas Foster Jan 1987

The Challenges And Limitations Of Conducting Research Among The Old Order Amish, Jerry Savells, Thomas Foster

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The Old Order or "horse and buggy" Amish have been a part of American society for more than two centuries. Today, some 95,000 Amish persons reside in over twenty states, a Canadian province, and two countries in Latin America. Although variations exist in the social values and behavioral practices within different Amish communities (or church districts), they have basically resisted the acculturation process that would reinforce and promote a standard of living and lifestyle embraced by most of the non-Amish in the U.S.

[Review Of] Irene L. Gendzier. Franz Fanon: A Critical Study, W. A. Jordan Iii Jan 1987

[Review Of] Irene L. Gendzier. Franz Fanon: A Critical Study, W. A. Jordan Iii

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This "revised" biography of Franz Fanon (first published in 1973) is a welcome event for those who either missed feeling the impact of his work in the turbulent 1960s and 1970s or were so blinded by the period's turmoil that Fanon's life and work could not be critically evaluated. Grove Press must be congratulated for re-issuing Gendzier's study, particularly since the political fervor for radical political action has passed (for now) and little profit can be expected from this book. In this day of corporate mergers and greed, a commitment to publish what is in the public interest is meritorious.

An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar Jan 1987

An Assessment Of Pain Responses During Stages Of Pregnancy, Ann H. Dunbar

Theses and Dissertations

As physical therapists are becoming more involved with the pregnant population both in traditional patient care as well as in childbirth education, a better understanding of the influence of pregnancy on the pain system is needed. The purpose of this study was to determine if an endogenous analgesia system is present in pregnant humans as has been shown to be present in animals (Ginzler, 1980). Women's affective and intensity responses were measured during late pregnancy, labor and post-partum. Using a repeated measures design, fifteen women responded to thermal stimuli (43-52 degrees C) by marking a visual analogue scale. No significant …

The purpose of this study was to trace the development of nursing education at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing from its inception in 1893 through 1981. The primary focus was on the basic nursing programs which included the diploma, associate degree and baccalaureate programs. Other programs offered by the school were presented briefly in order to provide a more complete picture. Major trends in selected elements of faculty qualifications, curriculum, admission and graduation requirements, accreditation, and relationships to local hospitals and higher education in nursing education at the school were identified and compared to national standards …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Substance Abuse Awareness And Prevention Program Developed For Use With University-Level Varsity Student-Athletes, Robert Joseph Marcello Jan 1987

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Substance Abuse Awareness And Prevention Program Developed For Use With University-Level Varsity Student-Athletes, Robert Joseph Marcello

Theses and Dissertations

Substance abuse problems affect all segments of society including collegiate athletics. Drug testing programs are viewed as one method of combating this problem, however, more emphasis should be placed upon developing effective prevention programs. Towards this end, the first purpose of this study was to draw from available literature to design a prevention program which would cater to the specific needs of student- athletes. The position is taken that since multiple factors such as genetic predisposition, the pharmacological properties of various substances, psychological variables, and environmental/socio-cultural influences are implicated in the etiology of substance abuse difficulties, multi-focused/broad-spectrum intervention programs would …

Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy Jan 1987

Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy

Theses and Dissertations

An original HPLC assay was developed for pyrimethamine (PYR) in plasma, RBCs, and buffer for the purpose of studying its plasma protein binding and RBC partitioning.

Equilibrium dialysis (ED) was used to study protein binding. Isotonic phosphate buffer used in ED did not prevent small volume shifts. The pH of the plasma affected the protein binding of PYR although it was not significant for the comparison of binding at pH 7.4 vs. 8.0. PYR at 1000 ng/ml averaged 93.1% bound to plasma proteins. Binding to pure human albumin was 86.5% at lower levels of albumin and PYR (350 ng/ml). There …
