Vcu Voice (1989-02-01)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Cytomegalovirus And Child Day Care, Stuart P. Adler , M.D. Jan 1989

Cytomegalovirus And Child Day Care, Stuart P. Adler , M.D.

Internal Medicine Publications

Abstract

To determine whether day-care workers acquire cytomegalovirus infection from the children they care for, we studied 610 women employed at 34 day-care centers over two years.

Forty-one percent of the caretakers were seropositive for cytomegalovirus. After adjustment for the effects of race, marital status, and age on seropositivity, the women who cared for children younger than two years of age had a significantly higher seropositivity rate (46 percent) than the women who cared for children older than two years of age (35 percent) (relative risk, 1.29; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.05 to 1.57; P<0.02).

Of 202 initially seronegative caretakers …

Pharmacokinetics Of Gentamicin In Neonates On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation., W. Michael Southgate, Joseph T. Dipiro, Alex F. Robertson

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used in more than 1,000 infants in 50 centers in the United States. The extracorporeal circuit contains approximately 400 ml of blood, an amount exceeding the blood volume of most full-term neonates. The effect of this additional blood volume on drug disposition is unknown. In this study, we determined the pharmacokinetic parameters of gentamicin in 10 infants on ECMO. Gentamicin concentrations were determined by a fluorescence polarization immunoassay. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined from these concentrations by using a two-compartment model. Our study demonstrated a mean steady-state volume of distribution of 0.51 +/- 0.11 liters/kg, …

Critique [Of American Medical And Intellectual Reaction To African Health Issues, 1850-1960: From Racialism To Cross-Cultural Medicine By David Mcbride], Helen M. Castillo

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

David McBride unravels an informative set of historical events linking blacks and the prevailing health care beliefs and practices during the 110 years between 1850 and 1960. That true and empirical medico-sociological research was unavailable in the late 1800s and early 1900s is well recognized, and one need only to review these dates and the literature available on this topic to find these major research limitations.

[Review Of] W. Grant Dalstrom, David Lachar, And Leona E. Dahlstrom. Mmpi Patterns Of American Minorities, David Mcbride

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This anthology bobs out of the stormy sea of psychological research centered on minorities. The relationship between psychometrics and American minorities such as blacks, Native Americans, and Hispanics, is a long and troubled one. Prior to World War II standardized psychologic instruments were used mostly to assess and compare educational performance or "temperament" of whites and blacks or other racial minorities. But criticism emerged which questioned the reliability of such psychological tests. The tests seemed to find that, first, blacks and other minorities were inferior educational achievers compared to whites; and, second, severe psychosocial deficiencies of these minority group populations …

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Politically-oriented poetry is difficult to do well. Many politically oriented writers resist displaying a certain type of passion, the type of intense commitment that helps a writer convey ideas without being didactic, because displaying such intensity may make the writer feel vulnerable or weak in public. Conversely, many poets and artists use their art to grasp and convey what they see as profound dichotomy need not hold firm, however. Art, including poetry, has shown itself to be an effective way to convey important ideas, and the political struggles that surround issues of racial violence, oppression, war, famine, and the destruction …

Direct Measurement Of Translingual Epithelial Nacl And Kcl Currents During The Chorda Tympani Taste Response, G. L. Heck, K. C. Persaud, J. A. Desimone

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

ABSTRACT

We have measured the NaCI or KCI currents under voltage clamp across the dorsal lingual epithelium of the rat and simultaneously the response of the taste nerves. Under short-circuit conditions a NaCI stimulus evoked an inward current (first current) that coincided with excitation of the chorda tympani. This was followed by a slower inward current (second current) that matched the kinetics of taste nerve adaptation. The peak first current and the coincident neural response satisfied the same saturating NaCI concentration dependence. Both first and second currents were partially blocked by amiloride as were the phasic and tonic components of …

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick Jan 1989

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Since 1983, with the publication of five well-known national reports calling for reform in education,[2] the later release of other reports by prestigious groups (such as the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession and the Holmes Group), and the enactment of approximately 700 state statutes focused on school reform,[3] the push for excellence has overshadowed earlier commitments to equity in schools. As Orlich writes, "In at least one instance, implementing the proposals of these two groups [Carnegie and Holmes] would have the same undesirable effect: reducing the number of minority teachers from few to virtually none."[4] This movement …

The Merging Of Traditional Chinese Medicine And Western Medicine In China: Old Ideas Cross-Culturally Communicated Through New Perspectives, James A. Schnell

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The People's Republic of China is engaged in reforms which involve development of its economic, cultural, educational, and political processes. The need for reform has been realized as China has fallen behind the development of the western world in many areas. China closed its doors to the outside world in 1949, and it experienced limited interaction with the outside world until reform began in 1979.

National Newspaper Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of Jesse Jackson's 1984 Presidential Campaign: The Confirmation Of The Candidate, J. Gregory Payne, Scott C. Ratzan, Robert A. Baukus

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Jesse Jackson's 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns have motivated thousands of citizens throughout America to take a more active role in politics. The 1984 campaign witnessed many previously unregistered Americans actively participating in Jackson's call to join the "Rainbow Coalition." Four years later, Jackson once again hit a responsive chord within the American electorate, broadening his support base in his second run for the White House. His vibrant campaigns presented challenges not only to the American system of government, but also to accepted journalistic traditions in campaign reporting. Specifically, the dilemma has been a difficult one for journalists responsible for …
