Assessment Of Cefazolin And Cefuroxime Tissue Penetration By Using A Continuous Intravenous Infusion., John E. Connors, Joseph T. Dipiro, Ronald G. Hayter, K. Dale Hooker, Johnny A. Stanfield, Timothy R. Young

Publications from the Office of the Dean

A continuous intravenous infusion was used to assess the tissue penetration of cefazolin (14 subjects) and cefuroxime (15 subjects) in orthopedic surgery patients. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive a continuous intravenous infusion of cefazolin (mean, 178.6 mg/h) orcefuroxime (mean, 330.0 mg/h) at a rate estimated to achieve a target steady-state total concentration of 50 micrograms/ml in serum. The infusion was initiated 12 to 14 h before surgery, and blood and muscle tissue samples were collected intraoperatively at the times of incision and wound closure. Although there was a significant difference between the free concentrations ofcefazolin (at incision, 9.3 micrograms/ml; …

Effects Of Magnesium-Aluminum Hydroxide And Calcium Carbonate Antacids On Bioavailability Of Ofloxacin, Soledad Flor, David R. P. Guay, John A. Opsahl, Kenneth Tack, Gary R. Matzke Jan 1990

Effects Of Magnesium-Aluminum Hydroxide And Calcium Carbonate Antacids On Bioavailability Of Ofloxacin, Soledad Flor, David R. P. Guay, John A. Opsahl, Kenneth Tack, Gary R. Matzke

Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science Publications

The effects of 15- and 5-ml doses of magnesium-aluminum hydroxide (MAH) and calcium carbonate (CC) antacids, respectively, on the bioavailability of ofloxacin after single oral 400-mg doses of ofloxacin were investigated in a 32-subject, randomized, crossover, open-label study. On four separate occasions, subjects received ofloxacin alone or antacid 24 h before, 2 h before, or 2 h after ofloxacin administration (n = 16 for each antacid). CC administration had no significant effect on the rate and extent of ofloxacin absorption regardless of the timing of antacid administration. A small but significant negative effect of MAH administration 2 h before ofloxacin …

Cyanonews (Vol. 6, No. 3, December 1990), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

Critiques [Of "Black" Or "African American"; What's In A Name? By Johnny Washington], Ashton Wesley Welch Jan 1990

Critiques [Of "Black" Or "African American"; What's In A Name? By Johnny Washington], Ashton Wesley Welch

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In "'Black' or 'African American': What's in a Name?" Johnny Washington reminds us that on the appropriate name for Americans of African descent has been ongoing, with varying degrees of intensity, for a long time. In illustrating the ancientness of the debate, he referred to precedents of the current irruption. He observed that "Booker T. Washington advanced the ethnic identity debate" in the 1890s. He also pointed to twentieth century contributions to the labelling crisis by W. E. B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Alain Locke, and Stokely Carmichael. Yet, neither the debate nor the labels themselves are the core concern for …

Abstracts From The Eighteenth Annual Conference National Association For Ethnic Studies, Inc

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

For the third year in a row, Conference participants were greeted with snow and ice; however, the chilly weather was not indicative of the warmth generated in sessions and special events planned by Conference organizers Larry Estrada and Jeannie Ortega. The theme, "Ethnicity, Justice, and the National Experience," was addressed by plenary session speakers Tom Romero and Dana Sims. Ray Rodrigues and Keith Miser presented a model for dealing with diversity on campus with the "Colorado State University Perspective on Diversity. "Orage Quarles III, president and publisher of the Fort ColIins Coloradan, eloquently addressed participants at the banquet with his …

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

It may be apocryphal by now, but it has often been said, and it is repeated again by Rodriguez in her most recent contribution to the literature that "Puerto Ricans still hold the dubious distinction of being among the most researched and least understood people in the United States, if not the world. "Rodriguez's use of the existing voluminous literature on the Puerto Rican experience certainly reinforces this widely held belief. Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino ethnic group in the United States, and in New York City one out of every eight people is Puerto Rican. This is …

Role Of Newly Synthesized Steroid Hormone Antagonists In Adrenocortico-Steroid Hormone-Induced Hypertension, Justicia Opoku-Edusei Jan 1990

Role Of Newly Synthesized Steroid Hormone Antagonists In Adrenocortico-Steroid Hormone-Induced Hypertension, Justicia Opoku-Edusei

Theses and Dissertations

Excess adrenocorticosteroid hormones such as glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids is well known to induce hypertension in several animal species as well as in humans. Therefore, the development of potent and specific glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid antagonists with antihypertensive effects is clinically necessary. steroid hormone antagonists being used therapeutically present serious endocrinology side effects such as the widely used antimineralocorticoid, spironolactone. The antiglucocorticoids available so far have been active only in vitro or only weakly in viva. Recently, three new exciting adrenocorticosteroid hormone antagonists have been synthesized. RU 486 is a potent antiglucocorticoid (and antiprogesterone with potential as an abortifacient), RU 26752 and …

Molecular And Cytogenetic Characterization Of De Novo Acrocentric Rearrangements In Humans, Lisa Gail Shaffer Jan 1990

Molecular And Cytogenetic Characterization Of De Novo Acrocentric Rearrangements In Humans, Lisa Gail Shaffer

Theses and Dissertations

I have studied 26 children who have a de novo rearrangement of the acrocentric chromosomes in order to understand the formation of these aberrations. The families include '25 probands ascertained for Robertsonian-type translocations, 13 between nonhomologous chromosomes and 12 between homologs, and one rea(21;21)(q22;q22). The parental origins of the de novo rearrangements were determined in 26/26 families using QFQ and NOR variants and/or RFLP analyses. While there was no overall difference in the sex distribution of the parents of origin, there were more maternally derived nonhomologous ("true" Robertsonian) translocations (8 mat: 5 pat) and more paternally derived homologous rearrangements (4 …

The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell Jan 1990

The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell

Theses and Dissertations

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. Subsequently, I organize this model in terms of several sociologically based theoretical frameworks including activity fads, social movements, and sociocultural shifts, in order to …

Creativity And Political Identification In The Work Of Herbert Read, David Thistlewood Jan 1990

Creativity And Political Identification In The Work Of Herbert Read, David Thistlewood

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The idea of a class conflict, in which a powerful minority subjugates the majority among other ways by depriving it of any sense of self-esteem deriving from worthwhile, original work - that is, by suppressing its creativity - was something Herbert Read acquired through his youthful involvement in the late stages of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It was a premise he was never seriously to question, as was the corresponding idea that to assert one's right to be creative was to engage in a political act. He was certain that artistic conventions were the means of suppression, and that …

The Promises Of Art Appreciation: The Foundations Of Aesthetic Education, Charles R. Jansen Jan 1990

The Promises Of Art Appreciation: The Foundations Of Aesthetic Education, Charles R. Jansen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A history of appreciation could quickly multiply into a collection of histories, some tracing theories of appreciation as a phenomenon of mind and some tracing appreciation as a pedagogical subject or goal. In order to limit the directions a history of appreciation could take, this paper assumes that art appreciation in pedagogy encompasses and reflects various theories of art appreciation as a process of mind and thus focuses on the institutionalization of art appreciation.

The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder Jan 1990

The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

We begin with the cultural-anthropological assumption that a people’s world-view is based in concepts of time and process, and is reflected in the ceremonies, customs, rituals, and other traditional patterns of social conduct within the society. In a case study of the Native American Cherokee, linear modes of inquiry, characteristic of Western science, are shown to be limited in their capacity to examine and appreciate these dimensions of culture in pre-literate societies. It is suggested that those aspects of our own culture which are grounded in aesthetic value may also be relatively inaccessible for the same reason. By examining meanings …

Collecting Women’S Art And Native American Artificates: Issues For Museum Curators, John Wilton Jan 1990

Collecting Women’S Art And Native American Artificates: Issues For Museum Curators, John Wilton

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Egalitarianism is quite possibly the education buzzword of the eighties. Egalitarianism is belabored in the literature of late that it seems inconceivable that any person or institution with any degree of social responsibility has not yet acted to realign the programs and policies of our biased past. Yet many major social groups still remain disenfranchised in the current American cultural scenario. This commentary addresses the predicament of two of those groups-women and Native Americans. While seemingly unrelated, both groups share a common dilemma: their voices, their opinions and their expressions are not yet respected in the realm of art and …

Art Education In The Time Of Aids, Peter Schellin Jan 1990

Art Education In The Time Of Aids, Peter Schellin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The health crisis which in recent years has depleted the ranks of the art community, has not received much formal notice in art education journals. A continuing stigma remains attached to AIDS due to its appearance among gay men and IV drug users. Many people pretend it is not there. My own life has become consumed by it, due to the illness of many, many friends and associates. For nearly two years, because of the enormity of the crisis combined with relatively little action on state and federal levels and the mounting grief and loss in my own life, I …

The Not So Mysterious Ways Of Mystification, Georgia Collins Jan 1990

The Not So Mysterious Ways Of Mystification, Georgia Collins

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

According to my reading of Men in Feminism, in the Modern Language Association, male interest in feminist issues is already considerable: MLA men lecture and write in the feminist mode; want to be acknowledged for doing so; and ask that discussions of male responsibilities and roles be placed on the feminist agendas. The task of defining roles for sympathetic males in what is otherwise understood to be a woman's “do-it-yourself" movement may be a real problem for our MLA sisters. But back in the NAEA, we have a different set of problems and, I would submit, a unique opportunity for …

Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson Jan 1990

Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

After a short hiatus, overt racism is on the rise again. Increases in reported racially motivated crime and violence have been noted all over the country. In the wider U.S. society, identifiable racial incidents have been estimated to have increased 55 percent from 1986 to 1987. According to the Community Relations Service (CRS), African Americans comprised two-thirds of the victims in the cases reported in 1987. Although this racial violence has taken various forms ranging from name-calling, vandalism, and cross-burning to actual physical assaults that result in casualties and death, these have not been isolated incidents but have their basis …

Thinking Woman's Children And The Bomb, Helen Jaskoski Jan 1990

Thinking Woman's Children And The Bomb, Helen Jaskoski

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of July 16, 1979, an earthen dam holding back wastes produced by United Nuclear Corporation's uranium mill parted in Church Rock, New Mexico. From the widening breach poured ninety four million gallons of highly contaminated effluent and 1,100 tons of wet slurry sands.

Critiques [Of "Black" Or "African American"; What's In A Name? By Johnny Washington], Bamidele J. Bracy

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Aside from examining the ways people ascribe meaning to the terms "Black" and "African-American" and possible "underlying social dynamics" impeding or precipitating ethnic label changes, Washington concludes that these above mentioned "sign-posts" may be justifiable periodic changes which an ethnic group should constantly re-interpret on its ever evolving "cosmic" journey. Washington presents an interesting case from a philosophical/metaphysical standpoint. From a social scientific perspective, however, there is much to be determined.
