Vcu Voice (1994-02-07)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Antilipopolysaccharide (anti-LPS) immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM have been associated with protection from LPS effects in vivo. We investigated the presence of IgE and anti-LPS in 32 patients that had experienced severe traumatic injury and in 35 healthy volunteers; we also investigated whether IgE anti-LPS was associated with important clinical events. Plasma samples were collected daily from patients in the intensive care unit and on one occasion from volunteers; the samples were assayed for IgE anti-LPS. IgE anti-LPS was assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with monoclonal anti-human IgE as the capture antibody. Detection was accomplished with biotin-labeled LPS (Escherichia coli …

Diagnostic Evaluation Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, David E. Soper, Jeffrey F. Peipert
Diagnostic Evaluation Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, David E. Soper, Jeffrey F. Peipert
Obstetrics and Gynecology Publications
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious public health and reproductive health problem in the United States. An early and accurate diagnosis of PID is extremely important for the effective management of the acute illness and for the prevention of long-term sequelae. The diagnosis of PID is difficult, with considerable numbers of false-positive and false-negative diagnoses. An abnormal vaginal discharge or evidence of lower genital tract infection is an important and predictive finding that is often underemphasized and overlooked. This paper reviews the clinical diagnosis and supportive laboratory tests for the diagnosis of PID and outlines an appropriate diagnostic plan …

Inactivation Of Hit Cell Ca2+ Current By A Simulated Burst Of Ca2+ Action Potentials, L. S. Satin, S. J. Tavalin, P. D. Smolen
Inactivation Of Hit Cell Ca2+ Current By A Simulated Burst Of Ca2+ Action Potentials, L. S. Satin, S. J. Tavalin, P. D. Smolen
Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications
ABSTRACT A novel voltage-clamp protocol was developed to test whether slow inactivation of Ca2+ current occurs during bursting in insulin-secreting cells. Single insulin-secreting HIT cells were patch-clamped and their Ca2+ currents were isolated pharmacologically. A computed ,3-cell burst was used as a voltage-clamp command and the net Ca2+ current elicited was determined as a cadmium difference current. Ca2+ current rapidly activated during the computed plateau and spike depolarizations and then slowly decayed. Integration of this Ca2+ current yielded an estimate of total Ca influx. To further analyze Ca2+ current inactivation during a burst, repetitive test pulses to + 10 mV …

Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whereas the economic mobility observed among Asian Americans is often attributed to their cultural values, this article demonstrates the importance of state aid to the economic mobility of a community of Southeast Asian refugees living in California. Using data from a lengthy ethnographic study of rural Laotian refugees, the content and administration of social welfare programs offered political refugees is contrasted with the social policies extended toward other poor communities. As variations in social policies can constrain or facilitate economic mobility, the concrete impact of welfare state policies on different ethnic communities is a topic in need of further exploration.
[Review Of] H. Henrietta Stockel. Women Of The Apache Nation: Voices Of Truth, Sally Mcbeth
[Review Of] H. Henrietta Stockel. Women Of The Apache Nation: Voices Of Truth, Sally Mcbeth
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
At a time when books about Native American women need to provide the reader with unromanticized images of strong women in their own right, Stockel’s book, Women of the Apache Nation, succeeds only partially. The sixty-two page historical introduction and the two shorter introductions to the Mescalero (New Mexico) and Fort Sill (Oklahoma) Apache, while important to situating the women’s narratives that follow, are flawed by inaccuracies, overly dependent on secondary sources, and replete with unnecessary references to historical male figures and male relatives. Stockel, for example, incorrectly uses the term ”Western pache” which does not include Mescalero or Fort …
[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward
[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The purpose of this book is to examine cultural aspects of hegemonic relations between White Americans and African Americans, a neglected topic which the author believes should provide the basis for African American Studies programs. Although Semmes establishes culture as the focus of his analysis, political and economic forces are clearly important for understanding the position of Black Americans in the changing social organization of the U.S. Defined as regularly in subjective states, culture is theorized as interacting with social organization, as institutional settings frame cultural expressions and vice versa.

[Review Of] Leonore Loeb Adler And Uwe P. Gielen. Cross-Cultural Topics On Psychology, Yueh-Ting Lee
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
It has been over forty years since Gordon Allport published The Nature of Prejudice (Cambridge, MA: Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., 1954). To Allport, sociocultural factors play an important role in our prejudice, especially when we do not understand cultural differences. However, Allport's book dealt little with cross-cultural research. Fortunately, Leonore Loeb Adler and Uwe P. Gielen, two experts in cross-cultural research, have presented us with their recent study on how cultural understanding helps us to be more open-minded.

Review Of The P53 Tumor Suppressor Gene And Its Role In Gliomas, James Dearing Christian
Review Of The P53 Tumor Suppressor Gene And Its Role In Gliomas, James Dearing Christian
Theses and Dissertations
The following review of the p53 tumor suppressor gene will be discussed with particular attention to its role in human gliomas, as well as the various advances that have brought this molecule to the forefront of cancer research. A review of tumorigenesis focuses on the molecular mechanisms that convey neoplastic characteristics upon a normal cell. It is discussed how the coordinate advances in chromosome analysis and molecular techniques enabled the p53 gene to be categorized as a "tumor suppressor gene" and applied to various forms of cancer, including colorectal and lung carcinoma. The focus of the review will be on …
