Vcu Voice (1994-03-07)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Welfare Policies And Racial Stereotypes: The Structural Construction Of A Model Minority, Mary E. Kelsey
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whereas the economic mobility observed among Asian Americans is often attributed to their cultural values, this article demonstrates the importance of state aid to the economic mobility of a community of Southeast Asian refugees living in California. Using data from a lengthy ethnographic study of rural Laotian refugees, the content and administration of social welfare programs offered political refugees is contrasted with the social policies extended toward other poor communities. As variations in social policies can constrain or facilitate economic mobility, the concrete impact of welfare state policies on different ethnic communities is a topic in need of further exploration.

[Review Of] Leonore Loeb Adler, Ed. Women In Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sudha Ratan
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is a collection of essays by women writers from several countries including the United States, Great Britain, the former Soviet Union, India, China, Nigeria, and Thailand. These writers examine the interaction of biology, social role, and culture in shaping women's roles in different societies. They attempt to provide a broad overview of the conditions and the problems faced by women in their respective societies.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
It has been over forty years since Gordon Allport published The Nature of Prejudice (Cambridge, MA: Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., 1954). To Allport, sociocultural factors play an important role in our prejudice, especially when we do not understand cultural differences. However, Allport's book dealt little with cross-cultural research. Fortunately, Leonore Loeb Adler and Uwe P. Gielen, two experts in cross-cultural research, have presented us with their recent study on how cultural understanding helps us to be more open-minded.

[Review Of] Brian W. Dippie. George Catlin And His Contemporaries: The Politics Of Patronage, John Antoine Labadie
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Although Americans in the 1990's often argue whether an artist's or researcher's work merits public funding, many agree that we should fund both the arts and scientific inquiry in nearly all their diverse forms. But the basic question of patronage remains. Federal and private funding of arts and science-related work were much in question over a hundred years ago, when the artist George Catlin requested that the United States government purchase his American Indian collection.

[Review Of] Americo Paredes. The Hammon And The Beam And Other Stories, Carl R. Shirley
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Américo Paredes is a seminal figure in Mexican-American studies. Professor Emeritus of English and Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, he is best known for his work in folklore, principally With His Pistol in His Hand: A Border Ballad and lts Hero. But after a distinguished career as teacher and scholar, he has turned in recent years to literature (mostly written years ago), with the publication of a novel (George Washington Gomez) in 1990 and a collection of poetry (Between Two Worlds) in 1991. The present accumulation of seventeen stories, combined with Paredes’ novel and poetry, provide a …

[Review Of] Genaro M. Padilla. My History, Not Yours: The Formation Of Mexican American Autobiography, Susan L. Rockwell
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Genaro Padilla and University of Wisconsin Press should be commended for the publication of a much needed addition to the study of American autobiography, in general, and ethnic autobiography, in particular. Early Mexican American autobiographies remain largely ignored and forgotten. The importance of these autobiographies should not be ignored, however, especially with regard to the study of the West and Southwest. With this book, Padilla opens the door to the retrieval and study of these important historical documents.

[Review Of] Claude Levi-Strauss And Didier Eribon. Conversations With Claude Levi-Strauss, Harriet Ottenheimer
[Review Of] Claude Levi-Strauss And Didier Eribon. Conversations With Claude Levi-Strauss, Harriet Ottenheimer
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This series of conversations between French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss and French journalist Didier Eribon was first published in French in 1988. Happily, it has now been translated into English and can be more widely read in the English-speaking world. It is, in a sense, a guided autobiography, although one gets the impression that Levi-Strauss resists revealing too much of himself to Eribon and his readers. Nonetheless, one gains significant insights into the man and his world in at least two different domains: the personal and the academic. Ethnic studies scholars should find both of interest.

Review Essay: "Arthur M. Schlesinger's Vision Of America And The Multicultural Debate" By Jesse M. Vazquez, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In April of 1990, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., published an essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled "When Ethnic Studies are Un-American."[1] The publication of that article followed, by about eight months, the release of New York State's Department of Education's now controversial report -- "A Curriculum of Inclusion."[2] Interestingly, the publication of The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society also follows, by about seven months, the release of New York State's second and most current Education Department report calling for the development of a new multicultural social studies curriculum -- One Nation, Many Peoples: A Declaration of …
[Review Of] William K. Powers. War Dance: Plains Indian Musical Performance, David M. Gradwohl
[Review Of] William K. Powers. War Dance: Plains Indian Musical Performance, David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This book on Plains Indian music and dance goes far beyond its geographically indicated target. It provides an instructive view of musical performances as a paradigm for understanding cultural continuity and change not only among American Indians in general but, I submit, many other ethnic and minority groups. Powers's discussion includes descriptive material pertaining to the movements and costumes involved in Plains Indian tribal and intertribal dances. He also reviews and critiques a number of available audio tapes and records which should be of special interest to readers of Sights and Sounds.
