Asthma In Adults, James P. Baker
Asthma In Adults, James P. Baker
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Asthma, or acute reversible obstructive airways disease (ROAD), is a major respiratory disease affecting approximately eight million people in the United States. The disease is characterized by attacks of wheezing dyspnea with coughing and sputum production. Although most adult patients who have the disease demonstrate either bronchospastic episodes during childhood or will have repeated episodes of respiratory infection, upper and lower or both during early years, some patients do begin only in later life, that is, adult onset asthma. All of these patients usually have no symptoms or signs during interval periods, but with proper stimuli will demonstrate airways obstruction.

Radiopharmaceutical Production And Quality Control, Jerry I. Hirsch
Radiopharmaceutical Production And Quality Control, Jerry I. Hirsch
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
With the development of shorter-lived, organ-specific radiopharmaceuticals, much of the manufacture and quality control of these products have shifted from commercial manufactures to individual nuclear medicine laboratories. Recognizing this fact, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is encouraging quality assurance by proposing that "an authorized physician may permit technicians and other paramedical personnel to perform the preparation and quality control testing of radiopharmaceuticals..." Cohen has categorized pharmaceutical controls into chemical, biological, and physical. Figure 1 is a diagram of these controls. In each control a degree of purity is implied and is often determined by comparison to standard.
The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Richard H. Kirkland
The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Carcinoma Of The Thyroid, Richard H. Kirkland
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The major point I would like to make is that we should try to prevent thyroid carcinoma by administration of thyroid hormones to all patients with potentially high TSH and damaged-thyroid disease, using suppressive doses of levothyroxine. In my opinion, all patients who have thyroid disease should be treated with thyroid hormone indefinitely, once hyperthyroidism has been eliminated.
A Comparison Of Acrosomal Proteinase Activity In The Male And Female Reproductive Tracts Of The Guinea Pig, Thomas Joseph Morris
A Comparison Of Acrosomal Proteinase Activity In The Male And Female Reproductive Tracts Of The Guinea Pig, Thomas Joseph Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The spermatozoon has been the subject of numerous investigations because of its remarkable specialization for locomotion and fertilization. Although the spermatozoon of the guinea pig is relatively large when compared with other mammalian spermatozoa, its small size has hidden many of the details of its structure from the light microscopist. It was not until the invention of the electron microscope that a thorough study of spermatozoon structure could be accomplished. The following anatomical description is based on the works of Fawcett and Hollenberg (1963), Fawcett (1965), and Fawcett (1970). The principle parts of the guinea pig spermatozoon are the head …

The Morphologic Changes In The Muscles Of Mastication Due To Direct Intramuscular Injection Of Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Procaine And Citanest, Kurt Elliot Friedman
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most commonly experienced symptoms in dentistry and one that is of major concern to the dentist is pain. Since pain is manifested when an environmental change occurs causing injury to responsive tissues, it is often spoken of as a protective mechanism.
Pain has been described by a variety of terms: sharp, burning, aching, cramping, dull and throbbing! (Monheim, 1969). Therefore, it is a difficult term to define. Monheim (1969) describes pain as an unpleasant sensation created by a noxious stimulus that is mediated along specific nerve pathways into the central nervous system, where it is interpreted as …

Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.
Food Habits Of The Game Fishes Of Lake Anna, Virginia, Thomas Kenneth Rohrer
Food Habits Of The Game Fishes Of Lake Anna, Virginia, Thomas Kenneth Rohrer
Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in May, 1973 and continuing through August, 1974 the food habits of several species of game fishes from Lake Anna, Virginia were investigated via gut content analysis. A variety of collecting methods were employed to secure specimens for examination and stomach contents were reported as percent frequency of occurrence. A total of one hundred and two collections were made yielding 287 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacépède); 166 chain pickerel, Esox; niger LeSueur; 53 bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque; 32 pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus); and 63 black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus (LeSueur). It was found that M. salmoides and E. niger were …
Vcu Today (1974-08-29)
VCU Today, 1972-1988
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Viruses And The Conntective Tissue Diseases, Morris Ziff
Viruses And The Conntective Tissue Diseases, Morris Ziff
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
A number of observations in the last few years have attracted attention to the possibility of viral infection in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). One of these is the occurrence of interwoven tubular structures, usually in the endothelial cells of the kidney but also in the lymphocytes and in fibroblasts when SLE skin fibroblasts are cultured. These tubular structures have resembled viruses (they were thought by their discoverers to be myxo- or paramyxoviruses), but it has been argued that they are not viruses because of their size and appearance and because they have been produced in tissue cultures from subjects who …
The "Three R'S" Of Delayed Hypersensitivity, David Horwitz
The "Three R'S" Of Delayed Hypersensitivity, David Horwitz
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Delayed hypersensitivity is one of several immune responses initiated by thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes. The mononuclear infiltrate of delayed hypersensitivity is a collaborative phenomenon between T lymphocytes and monocytes. This collaboration can be separated into components which I have chosen to call the "three R's" of delayed hypersensitivity. In this discussion I will define these "three R's" and examine the usefulness of this concept in clinical medicine.
