Oral Hypoglycemic Agents, Harold Rifkin
Oral Hypoglycemic Agents, Harold Rifkin
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In conclusion, comment is made on the findings of the University Group Diabetes Program (UGDP). The purpose of the UGDP was to determine whether or not control of blood glucose levels would help to prevent or delay vascular disease in non-insulin-requiring diabetics. After 8 1/2 years of follow-up at 12 university-affiliated treatment centers, "The findings of the study indicate that the combination of diet and tolbutamide therapy is no more effective than diet alone in prolonging life. Moreover, the findings suggest that tolbutamide and diet may be less effective than diet alone or diet and insulin, at least insofar as …
Influence Of Duration Of Homograft On Humoral Responses In Man, Marion Waller, James C. Pierce, Gerardo Mendez-Picon, Hyung M. Lee
Influence Of Duration Of Homograft On Humoral Responses In Man, Marion Waller, James C. Pierce, Gerardo Mendez-Picon, Hyung M. Lee
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Elevated titers of natural antibodies have been demonstrated in the sera of patients following transplantation. These humoral responses were thought to be associated with rejection. This concept was challenged by investigators whose studies associated these responses with infection or with injection of heterologous serum. Nevertheless, the possible prognostic significance of these relatively simple tests has continued to evoke interest. This study was undertaken to compare the humoral responses in three different groups of patients with organ transplants in order to evaluate the influence of duration of the homograft and the attendant immunosuppression.
Immunology And Disease Of The Kidney, William F. Falls Jr.
Immunology And Disease Of The Kidney, William F. Falls Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The emphasis of this paper is the review of several aspects of renal disease which have immunologic overtones and clinical relevance. The pathogenesis of several subtypes of glomerulonephritis will be discussed, the immunologic implications of amyloidosis will be noted, and the relation between immune mechanisms and tubulointerstitial disease will be mentioned. The discussion will then be completed by an analysis of the prognosis of the aforementioned renal disease, and by an attempt to place contemporary therapeutic modalities in a proper perspective.

Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The existence of immunity to cancer was postulated by the eminent scientists who helped to establish the discipline of immunology. In 1907 Clowes suggested that human resistance to cancer resulted from what we today call “immune surveillance.” During the ensuing 70 years the results obtained from experimental animal cancers and human cancers have greatly influenced the palatability of tumor-immunity theories. Early optimism that immunity to cancer could be specifically induced waned and almost disappeared when it was demonstrated that the rejection of cancer transplants resulted from transplantation immunity and not tumor immunity. A sustained wave of enthusiasm for immunity to …
Why Control Diabetes?, Harold Rifkin
Why Control Diabetes?, Harold Rifkin
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The definition of diabetes control varies widely among specialists of the disease. Proponents of "good" control believe that the goals of appropriate therapy for diabetes should include an all-out effort to obtain levels of fasting and postprandial blood glucose as close to those in the non-diabetic as possible. Certainly, good control has been proven to accomplish the following: 1. prevention of ketoacidosis; 2. prevention of severe hypoglycemia; 3. decrease in perinatal mortality and morbidity; 4. promotion of normal growth and development of the juvenile diabetic; 5. prevention of, or inhibition of, infection. The evidence that hyperglycemia is responsible for vascular …

Temporal Aspects Of Calling Behavior In Oyster Toadfish, Opsanus-Tau, Michael L. Fine
Temporal Aspects Of Calling Behavior In Oyster Toadfish, Opsanus-Tau, Michael L. Fine
Biology Publications
The oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau (Linnaeus), produces two calls: an agonistic grunt and a boatwhistle associated with courtship (Fish 1954; Tavolga 1958,1960; Gray and Winn 1961). The boatwhistle is produced only by males on nests (Gray and Winn 1961) and is endogenously driven as well as influenced by calling of surrounding males (Winn 1964, 1967, 1972; Fish 1972). A toadfish, not hearing other males, may still boatwhistle for long periods and attract a female. Although toadfish may be influenced to call by the calling of adjacent males, one would assume the circadian patterning of the boatwhistle to be influenced by …

Coma In Infancy And Childhood, Edwin C. Myer
Coma In Infancy And Childhood, Edwin C. Myer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Coma is defined as an altered state of consciousness from which arousal due to appropriate stimuli is not adequately achieved. Such a definition of the state of coma is plagued with semantic problems, and terminology describing various comatose states is vast and even more ambiguous when applied to the infant. Rather than using such terms as coma, semicoma, stupor, or obtundation, it is better to describe the physical state of the unresponsive patient. The description should include the patient’s appearance, movements either spontaneous or elicited from stimuli, the patient’s response to the stimulus, and the nature of the stimulus, whether …

Genetic Studies Of Deafness And Of Retinitis Pigmentosa, Joann A. Boughman, Frederick R. Bieber, Walter E. Nance
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In experimental animals where the generation time is short and matings can be controlled experimentally, it is a relatively simple task to determine whether a trait is genetic, how it is inherited, and where the causal gene pair is located. However, in human genetics, inferences must be drawn by pooling observations on many small families in which the trait of interest has occurred. The condition may be etiologically heterogeneous, resulting from environmental causes in some families and showing variable patterns of inheritance in others. Hereditary deafness and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) provide instructive examples of the problems involved in the genetic …
The Genetic And Environmental Effects On Diabetes In Humans And Animals: An Overview, Roger M. Loria, Linda A. Corey
The Genetic And Environmental Effects On Diabetes In Humans And Animals: An Overview, Roger M. Loria, Linda A. Corey
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Despite intense scrutiny the precise etiology of diabetes mellitus remains unclear. There appear to be two major forms of diabetes: juvenile-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes, and late-onset or insulin-independent diabetes; the late-onset form, in itself, may be etiologically heterogeneous. Either form may occur at any age, with a clear distinction between the two often being difficult to make. Juvenile-onset diabetes, representing 5% to 10% of all cases, is characterized by abrupt onset, clinical manifestation of hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis, and generally by a requirement for exogenous insulin; in maturity-onset diabetes plasma levels of insulin are usually normal or elevated and the abnormality …

Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal
Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of ethanol administration on the antinociceptive activity, lethal properties and brain concentration of methadone, were investigated. The effect of ethanol on the antinociceptive activity of methadone was assessed by the hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Concentrations of methadone in the brain were determined by the use of 3H-methadone as well as by gas liquid chromatographic analysis. The study showed that moderate doses of ethanol did not alter tail-flick or hot-plate response by themselves. However, when combined with methadone, ethanol produced a significant increase in the antinociceptive effectiveness of methadone as measured by both a decrease in the ED50 of …
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Summary:
1. The type of animal blood used in preparing blood agar plates did not significantly affect the demonstration of hemolysis by any streptococcal species except for S.faecalis. S.faecalis more consistently displayed an alpha reaction on sheep blood agar while expressing a beta reaction on horse and rabbit blood agars.
2. A recommended scheme for identifying streptococci, adaptable to most any clinical laboratory, was developed and is outlined in Table 13.
3. S.agalactiae (group B) was the most frequent beta hemolytic streptococcal isolant. Significantly, it was the only species over-all to be recovered from every clinical source. The CAMP test …
