Mechanisms Of Regulation Of The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene During Myelomonocytic Differentiation, Lawrence H. Boise
Mechanisms Of Regulation Of The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene During Myelomonocytic Differentiation, Lawrence H. Boise
Theses and Dissertations
Control of hematopoiesis is a complex set of events that is currently being dissected at the molecular level. To determine factors that may be crucial for commitment to terminal differentiation of myelomonocytic cells, a mutant of the HL-60 cell line was characterized at the cellular and molecular level. This clone, termed DMSOr, was shown to differentiate in a similar fashion as parental HL-60 in response to 1.3% DMSO at the morphologic and functional level. The anti-proliferative aspects of differentiation were also present in DMSOr as evidenced by decreased 3H-thymidine incorporation and an increased percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase …
Spatial And Temporal Mechanisms Of Spinal Nociceptive Coding, Robert C. Coghill
Spatial And Temporal Mechanisms Of Spinal Nociceptive Coding, Robert C. Coghill
Theses and Dissertations
In order to better characterize spatial and temporal mechanisms of nociceptive processing in the central nervous system (CNS), the responses of rat spinal cord neuron populations to prolonged painful stimuli were examined. Metabolic mapping studies revealed that prolonged nociceptive thermal stimuli produced extensive activation in the deep dorsal horn, but minimal activation in the superficial dorsal horn. Electrophysiological investigations of neurons within these regions revealed that the responses of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons, the predominate nociceptive neuron in the deep dorsal horn, did not habituate substantially to prolonged nociceptive stimuli. In contrast, the responses of nociceptive specific neurons, the …

Reflecting upon the Caucus is for me a bit like reflecting upon an event like giving birth. Your work/body is taken over by larger forces. Your biography divides itself into pre and post. You can never again be who you were. And yet what is the Caucus on Social Theory? What's to be learned about it from that short period of "history" during which I worked as Coordinator {1986-89}?
A Para-Critical/Sitical/Sightical Reading Of Ralph Smith’S Excellence In Art Education, Jan Jagodzinski
A Para-Critical/Sitical/Sightical Reading Of Ralph Smith’S Excellence In Art Education, Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Figuratively speaking Smith is an old, old man, at least three-hundred and fifty years old, a reincarnation of Matthew Arnold who established the field of liberal-humanist cultural tradition between 1852-1882. At that time, English literature carried into the school curriculum was an act of faith whereby the great works of literature would have a civilizing influence on the nation. They could do for the masses what the classics had apparently failed to do for the privileged: to provide a bulwark against rising materialism (akin to the leisure and apathy of our youth today); compensate for the failure of religion to …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
An organization is frequently founded when Iike-minded people come together around issues and goals they feel strongly about. That is exactly how The Social Theory Caucus came about. We, as socially progressive, critically minded individuals, found each other so we could form an organizational home and agency of change within the National Art Education Association. Needless to say, no other organization within the art education profession was fulfilling those two functions for us.

Dr. Nancy R. Johnson served as the Coordinator of the Caucus from 1983 to 1987. In that sense, she is a factual part of the history of the Caucus, and she needs to be mentioned in any discussion of how the Caucus was founded and how it developed. I believe, however, that Nancy's career and her association with the Caucus are more significant than the facts of the matter or even what she accomplished as Coordinator; rather, her career and what she valued are paradigmatic in many ways of why the Caucus was formed and why it continued to include …

Informal Education. Sociocultural Expression. And Symbolic Meaning In Popular Immigration Music Text, Jose Macias
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
One February morning as I noted the events of the primary school talent show, a sixth-grade boy belted out this song made popular in two countries by the Mexican rock group, Los Bukis. It was 1987, and I was doing fieldwork in a rural Mexican immigrant-sending community I call San Felipe, for an ethnography of families and their children who emigrated from Mexico to the United States[2]
Oral Traditions Under Threat: The Australian Aboriginal Experience, Christine Morris
Oral Traditions Under Threat: The Australian Aboriginal Experience, Christine Morris
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Many writers in Australia have written about the economic and social effects of the written tradition upon the various oral traditions of Australia, but few have addressed the inappropriateness of replacing the oral tradition with a written one. It is wrong to assume that the written word is a means of cultural preservation. What, in fact, is occurring is that the oral tradition in Australia is being supplanted by the written tradition.

Identification Of Dq Alpha Polymorphism Using The Polymerase Chain Reaction, Richard Mello
Identification Of Dq Alpha Polymorphism Using The Polymerase Chain Reaction, Richard Mello
Theses and Dissertations
This was a study of detection systems for DQ alpha HLA polymorphism that could be exploited for the demonstration of simulated chimerism. Polymorphic segments of DO alpha DNA were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Simulated chimerism was represented by a mixture of minor and major component DNA. The goal was to detect minor component DNA in the presence of major component DNA utilizing various laboratory techniques. Techniques studied included probe strip typing with the AmpliType HLA-DO Alpha test kit, allele-specific amplification, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, restriction enzymes, and Southern transfer combined with a peroxidase detection system.
The AmpliType HLA-DO …
The Effects Of Concentric And Eccentric Contractions Performed At Equal Power Levels On Skeletal Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy, Thomas Philip Mayhew
The Effects Of Concentric And Eccentric Contractions Performed At Equal Power Levels On Skeletal Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy, Thomas Philip Mayhew
Theses and Dissertations
There are no data available as to whether training with eccentric contractions are more effective than concentric contractions for producing skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy. To better understand the effects of training with different contraction types two related studies were performed.
In the first study a device which is frequently used by clinicians for concentric and eccentric exercise, the Kin-ComR, was tested for accuracy and reliability. The measurements obtained from the force, angle, and speed transducers of this device were found to be accurate and reliable between days.
The purpose of the second study was to determine if there …
Effects Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) On The In Vitro Antibody Response: Differential Effects On The B Lymphocyte Depending On The State Of In Vivo Activation And The Modulation By Serum-Derived Growth Factors, Dale L. Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Previous reports have indicated a dichotomy in the actions of TCDD on humoral immunity, both in vitro and in vitro, in which enhancements and suppression have been identified. The latter effect has been correlated with induction of liver P4501A1 enzyme activity, a response which is regulated by the Ah-gene locus. Additionally, the primary alteration in suppression of antibody responses is in the differentiation of the B cell. Therefore, the current investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between these dual actions of TCDD on humoral immunity as related to its direct actions on B lymphocyte function. Specific emphasis was placed …

Vcu Voice (1990-09-21)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
