Passive Immunization During Pregnancy For Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, Giovanni Nigro, Stuart P. Adler, Renato La Torre, Al M. Best Jan 2005

Passive Immunization During Pregnancy For Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, Giovanni Nigro, Stuart P. Adler, Renato La Torre, Al M. Best

Pediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND

Currently, there is no effective intervention for a primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy.

METHODS

We studied pregnant women with a primary CMV infection. The therapy group comprised women whose amniotic fluid contained either CMV or CMV DNA and who were offered intravenous CMV hyperimmune globulin at a dose of 200 U per kilogram of maternal weight. A prevention group, consisting of women with a recent primary infection before 21 weeks' gestation or who declined amniocentesis, was offered monthly hyperimmune globulin (100 U per kilogram intravenously).

RESULTS

In the therapy group, 31 women received hyperimmune globulin, only 1 (3 …

Life In The Cosmological Future: Resources, Biomass And Populations, Michael Noah Mautner Jan 2005

Life In The Cosmological Future: Resources, Biomass And Populations, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

The amounts of life that can be realized in any ecosystem are determined by the resources of materials and energy, the requirements of the biomass, the rates of usage or wastage, and the life span of the habitat. In the Solar System, carbonaceous asteroids and comets are accessible resources, and meteorite-based microcosms showed that these materials could support microbial and plant life. Based on the measured nutrients, bioavailable materials in the carbonaceous asteroids can yield a biomass of 1018 kg, and the total materials of the comets can yield a biomass of 1025 kg. The total amount of life in …

A Multiple-Objective Decision Analysis Of Stakeholder Values To Identify Watershed Improvement Needs, Jason R. W. Merrick, Gregory S. Parnell, Jamison Barnett, Margot Garcia Jan 2005

A Multiple-Objective Decision Analysis Of Stakeholder Values To Identify Watershed Improvement Needs, Jason R. W. Merrick, Gregory S. Parnell, Jamison Barnett, Margot Garcia

Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications

The paper describes the use of multiple objective decision analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the quality of an endangered watershed and guide future efforts to improve the quality of the watershed. The Upham Brook watershed is an urban watershed that lies at the interface of declining inner city Richmond, Virginia and growth-oriented Henrico County. A section of stream within the watershed has been identified as so dangerously polluted that it threatens the health of the residents who live within the watershed boundaries. With funding provided by the National Science Foundation, the Upham Brook watershed project committee was formed to …

Some Good, Perchance: Shakespeare's Failures, Kevin Farley Jan 2005

Some Good, Perchance: Shakespeare's Failures, Kevin Farley

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Shakespeare’s King Lear is riven by troubled, and troubling, concerns with the efficacy of fiction to instill virtue in its audience – a concern heightened during this time by Puritan arguments denouncing the sinfulness of performance and the immorality of fiction in any form. In the figure of Edmund, Shakespeare seems to address these concerns, and perhaps conclude that stage fictions are fragile vessels for moral instruction. The critical reception of King Lear, originating with Johnsonian aversion at the unendurable and anti-providential nature of its ending, struggles to reconcile the miseries the play inflicts upon its audience with the …

In Search Of A "Singular I:" A Structurational Analysis Of Passing, Dawkins Marcia Alesan Jan 2005

In Search Of A "Singular I:" A Structurational Analysis Of Passing, Dawkins Marcia Alesan

Ethnic Studies Review

It is easy to envision the socio-cultural phenomenon of passing as a relic of a bygone era, yet passing is markedly more. From a historical perspective, "passing-as-white" is a strategy of representation through which light-skinned, white-looking, legally non-white Americans attempt(ed) to reconcile "two unreconciled ideals:" their limited opportunities as non-white people in a segregated society with their idealized life goals as full American citizens (DuBois, 1903; Candy, 1998). Recent scholarship on the phenomenon explains that passing is more than a masquerade. Passing can be accidental, incidental, or a committed lifestyle that is noted: when people effectively present themselves as other …

Combined Alterations, Travis James Fullerton Jan 2005

Combined Alterations, Travis James Fullerton

Theses and Dissertations

The world around us is in constant flux. The photographs we make of the world, no matter how true or untrue, have a direct influence on how we perceive the environment around us. Photography serves to categorize our perceptions of the world. The value of an image is not in what it represents, but in what it recalls. Photographs are fragmented and clear, imperfect and idealized all at the same time.

Toward Art-Making As Liberatory Pedagogy And Practice: Artists And Students In An Anti-Bullying School Reform Initiative, Sharon Verner Chappell Jan 2005

Toward Art-Making As Liberatory Pedagogy And Practice: Artists And Students In An Anti-Bullying School Reform Initiative, Sharon Verner Chappell

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I sit at my desk for the last thirty minutes before driving to school where I will teach a painting lesson on abstract art. I am an after school visual arts intervention teacher who travels among ten K-6 urban schools in the Bay Area of California. When I am not on campus, I am working at the district office coordinating visiting artist programs and developing integrated arts curriculum. Yet each day, I notice an increasing disconnect between my duties as a teacher and my own arts practice. My painting, collage, and drawing lessons look just like the ones in the …

Abu Ghraib: (Un)Becoming Photographs: How Can Art Educators Address Current Images From Visual Culture Perspectives?, Nancy Pauly

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

On Friday, May 7, 2004 the front page of The New York Times contained two photographs and a headline: "From Picture of Pride to Symbol of Abuse" (Dao, 2004, p.1). In the top photograph Lynndie R. England appears in 2003, smiling, standing in a relaxed family setting, and wearing a blue" Authentic USA" hooded sweatshirt with red and white lettering. Until early May that photo had been displayed in the Mineral County West Virginia Courthouse with other photographs of local soldiers stationed in Iraq.

“People Should Come To Work”: Un-Becoming Cartesian Subjects And Objects In Art Education, Sara Wilson Mckay

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

When asked about how he wants viewers to engage with his often confrontational and difficult work, performance artist William Pope. L responded, "people should come to work" (personal communication, February 3, 2003). Preparedness to engage, to work, is at the core of considering the connection of art education and democracy. All too often that connection is reduced to the idea of beauty being in the "eye of the beholder" and you can do whatever you want-flit's a free country!" Re-imagining the work of art education, I want to talk of rhizomes and cyborgs, perhaps at the risk of alienating readers …
