The Μ-Opioid Receptor Gene And Smoking Initiation And Nicotine Dependence, Lan Zhang, Kenneth S. Kendler, Xianging Chen
Psychiatry Publications
The gene encoding the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) is reported to be associated with a range of substance dependence. Experiments in knockout mice indicate that the mu-opioid receptor may mediate reinforcing effects of nicotine. In humans, opioid antagonist naltrexone may reduce the reinforcing effects of tobacco smoking. Additionally, the OPRM1 gene is located in a region showing linkage to nicotine dependence. The OPRM1 is thus a plausible candidate gene for smoking behavior. To investigate whether OPRM1 contributes to the susceptibility of smoking initiation and nicotine dependence, we genotyped 11 SNPs in the gene for 688 Caucasian subjects of lifetime smokers and …

Abstract
Pancreatic islets of Langerhans display complex intracellular calcium changes in response to glucose that include fast (seconds), slow (∼5 min), and mixed fast/slow oscillations; the slow and mixed oscillations are likely responsible for the pulses of plasma insulin observed in vivo. To better understand the mechanisms underlying these diverse patterns, we systematically analyzed the effects of glucose on period, amplitude, and plateau fraction (the fraction of time spent in the active phase) of the various regimes of calcium oscillations. We found that in both fast and slow islets, increasing glucose had limited effects on amplitude and period, but increased …

Effect Of Au Coating On The Magnetic And Structural Properties Of Fe Nanoclusters For Use In Biomedical Applications: A Density-Functional Theory Study, Q. Sun, A. K. Kandalam, Q. Wang, Puru Jena, Y. Kawazoe, M. Marquez

In this paper, we report the first systematic theoretical study of gold-coated iron nanoclusters, aiming at understanding the magnetic properties of this core-shell structure used in biomedical applications. The calculations based on density-functional theory focus on the effect of gold coating on the magnetic and structural properties of iron clusters of various sizes, and the reaction of the bare and coated iron clusters with oxygen. Our results show that the magnetic moment of iron nanocore with gold coating is still significantly higher than that in bulk Fe; the coupling between Fe atoms remained ferromagnetic and is insensitive to the thickness …
Nectin-2-Mediated Entry Of A Syncytial Strain Of Herpes Simplex Virus Via Ph-Independent Fusion With The Plasma Membrane Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Mark G. Delboy, Jennifer L. Patterson, Aimee M. Hollander, Anthony V. Nicola
Nectin-2-Mediated Entry Of A Syncytial Strain Of Herpes Simplex Virus Via Ph-Independent Fusion With The Plasma Membrane Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Mark G. Delboy, Jennifer L. Patterson, Aimee M. Hollander, Anthony V. Nicola
Microbiology and Immunology Publications
Background
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can utilize multiple pathways to enter host cells. The factors that determine which route is taken are not clear. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells that express glycoprotein D (gD)-binding receptors are model cells that support a pH-dependent, endocytic entry pathway for all HSV strains tested to date. Fusion-from-without (FFWO) is the induction of target cell fusion by addition of intact virions to cell monolayers in the absence of viral protein expression. The receptor requirements for HSV-induced FFWO are not known. We used the syncytial HSV-1 strain ANG path as a tool to evaluate the complex …

Surgical Infection Society Guidelines For Vaccination After Traumatic Injury, Thomas R. Howdieshell, Daithi Heffernan, Joseph T. Dipiro
Publications from the Office of the Dean
Background: Recommendations for vaccination of injured patients against infection are evolving. Newly-recognized infections, safety considerations, changing epidemiology, and redefinition of patient groups at risk are factors that may influence vaccine development priorities and recommendations for immunization. However, recommendations must often be formulated based on incomplete data, forcing reliance on expert opinion to address some crucial questions. These guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the prevention or treatment of infectious morbidity and mortality after traumatic injury, such as soft tissue wounds, human or animal bites, or after splenectomy.
Methods: A panel of experts conducted a thorough review of published literature, …

Organic Anion And Cation Transporter Expression And Function During Embryonic Kidney Development And In Organ Culture Model Systems, Douglas H. Sweet, Satish A. Eraly, Kevin T. Bush, Sanjay K. Nigam
Pharmaceutics Publications
Background
Organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs and OCTNs) mediate the proximal tubular secretion of numerous clinically important compounds, including various commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Here, we examine the ontogeny of these transporters in rat embryonic kidney in detail, both in vivo and in two in vitro organ culture models of kidney development, whole embryonic kidney (WEK) culture and culture of induced metanephric mesenchyme (MM).
Methods
We used QPCR to determine expression levels of transporter genes in rat embryonic kidneys on each day of gestation from ed13 to ed18, in induced and un-induced MM, and on each day of one …

Introduction
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) induces hemodilutional anemia, which frequently requires the transfusion of blood products. The objective of this study was to evaluate oxygen delivery and consumption and clinical outcome in low risk patients who were allocated to an hematocrit (Hct) of 20% versus 25% during normothermic CPB for elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Methods
This study was a prospective, randomized and controlled trial. Patients were subjected to normothermic CPB (35 to 36°C) and were observed until discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). Outcome measures were calculated whole body oxygen delivery, oxygen consumption and clinical outcome. A …
Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations
The focus of this investigation is in the realm of animation that straddles the ever-shrinking gulf between a screening and an exhibition, the theater and the art gallery. There is a subtle maturity and movement in the animation art world that not only continues but also extends the often-overlooked legacy of independent animation while engaging the conceptual dialogue of contemporary art. This tradition of an art aesthetic is passed from the early inventors who fashioned the necessary tools and images. The myriads of techniques and concepts evidenced throughout this history inform the current practitioner, just as digital technology and the …

I can't tell the most frightening story I know, because stories are made of words, and once I was without them. I was trekking in Nepal and ended up with amnesia. Later I stumbled into a mission hospital with a bruised jaw. A bad fall? I can't say. I had no words. No words for this thing that was wrenching and crying, in which "I" - a bundle of terror - seemed trapped. No words for where I began, stopped, or the mud stubble terrace on which I sat. No words to map, no words to define, no words to …
Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah
Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah
Ethnic Studies Review
Minorities in the United States have often been treated unfairly by law enforcement agencies. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States, Blacks were the main victims of racial profiling. Since the terrorist attack, however, Arabs and Muslims are becoming the primary targets for profiling by law enforcement agencies. There are some remarkable similarities between the profiling of Blacks and the profiling of Arabs and Muslims. In both cases, the fundamental problems with racial profiling are that it violates the civil liberties of innocent people and denies minorities the equal protection of the law. The War …

On Wednesdays, when the last period of the school day is finished, the students trickle out of room 412 of Burnham High School and the young women enter who have been waiting outside. They immediately push all the desks to the side or back walls, leaving a large open space. Then each carries a chair toward the front of the room, creating a circle. Someone closes the door, and they begin to talk with one another. Thus begins a weekly meeting of Voices of Women (VOW), a group comprised mainly of high school girls who create collaborative artwork based on …
