"As Mind To The Body": Prudence And Artificial Memory In The Illustrations And Commentary Of George Sandys' Ovid's Metamorphosis Englished (1632), James Hellman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an analysis of an English verse translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, published in 1632 by the Englishman George Sandys. This book included a full English commentary and was illustrated by several full-plate engravings. This study examines the edition's elaborate utilization of the rhetorical practices of artificial memory and related concepts of rhetorical invention. It demonstrates that these rhetorical practices were chosen and implemented for their inherent structural appropriateness for the cultivation of prudence, or practical wisdom. It reveals that the lessons in practical wisdom encoded in the work through the techniques of artificial memory were particularly aimed at …

Three-Dimensional Soft Tissue Changes Upon Smiling, Clayton Mcentire Apr 2013

Three-Dimensional Soft Tissue Changes Upon Smiling, Clayton Mcentire

As esthetic improvement continues to be a primary goal of orthodontic patients and practitioners, it is important to understand the soft tissue movements that occur during the transition from rest to smile. Advances in technology allow capture of 3-dimesional photographs. The purpose of this study was to quantify the soft tissue changes that occur upon smiling and to compare changes between males and females using 3-dimensional photography. Fifty-four participants had resting and smiling photographs taken with the 3dMDface camera system. The two images were registered on stable facial surfaces, landmarks were placed, and measurements were recorded. Three-dimensional changes occurred in …

Land Grab Or Development Planning Strategy: An Analysis Of Agricultural Development Led Industrialization Planning In Ethiopia., Nathan Teklemariam Apr 2013

Land Grab Or Development Planning Strategy: An Analysis Of Agricultural Development Led Industrialization Planning In Ethiopia., Nathan Teklemariam

Theses and Dissertations

Observing the current wave of large scale land acquisitions in Sub-Saharan Africa, many have found it easy to call the situation land grab, the new form of neo colonialism in Africa. In Ethiopia, few underlining socio-economic and political currents have shaped the leasing of its arable land to both national and international investors in recent years. The Agricultural Development Led Industrialization strategy the country adopted in the early 1990s, followed with consecutive short-term strategic plans focused primarily on agriculture as the driver for the nation’s economic growth and structural transformation, have acted as the main underpinnings in the commercialization of …

Characterizing The Role Of Cdk2ap1 In Primary Human Fibroblasts And Human Embryonic Stem Cells, Khaled Alsayegh Apr 2013

Characterizing The Role Of Cdk2ap1 In Primary Human Fibroblasts And Human Embryonic Stem Cells, Khaled Alsayegh

Theses and Dissertations

Cyclin Dependent Kinase-2 Associated Protein-1 (CDK2AP1) plays an important role in cell cycle regulation, by inhibiting CDK2 and by targeting it for proteolysis. It is also known to bind the DNA polymerase alpha-primase complex and regulate the initiation step of DNA synthesis. Its overexpression has been shown to inhibit growth, reduce invasion and increase apoptosis in a number of cancer cell lines. In studies in which mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) with targeted deletion of the Cdk2ap1 gene were used, Cdk2ap1 was shown to be required for epigenetic silencing of Oct4 during differentiation. The goal of this thesis was to …

Decoding Acting Vocabulary, Daniel Granke Apr 2013

Decoding Acting Vocabulary, Daniel Granke

Theses and Dissertations

This paper compares seemingly similar words from a variety of acting teachers, and shows how it is impossible to draw clear comparisons between words that are often used as synonyms. The paper is a reflection of the journey from believing in translation to recognizing its impossibility. In Chapter 1 we focus on one of the most common elements in actor training, Attention/focus/concentration, and analyze the shades of meaning in those words and the difficulty of talking about them in isolation. In Chapter 2 we look at the way in which semiotic analysis can explain the words resistance to equivalence. In …

Bioinformatics Approach To Probe Protein-Protein Interactions: Understanding The Role Of Interfacial Solvent In The Binding Sites Of Protein-Protein Complexes;Network Based Predictions And Analysis Of Human Proteins That Play Critical Roles In Hiv Pathogenesis., Mesay Habtemariam

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis work contains two projects under the same umbrella. The first project is to provide a detailed analysis on the behavior of interfacial water molecules at protein-protein complexes, in this case focusing on homodimeric complexes, and to investigate their effect with respect to different residue types. For that reason the homodimeric data-set, which includes high-resolution (≤ 2.30 Å) X-ray crystal structures of 252 (140 Biological & 112 Non-biological) protein complexes was chosen to explore fundamental differences between interfaces that Nature has “engineered” vs. compared to interfaces found under man-made conditions. The data set was comprised of 5391 water molecules …

Time Dependent Cone-Beam Ct Reconstruction Via A Motion Model Optimized With Forward Iterative Projection Matching, David Staub Apr 2013

Time Dependent Cone-Beam Ct Reconstruction Via A Motion Model Optimized With Forward Iterative Projection Matching, David Staub

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to present the development and validation of a novel method for reconstructing time-dependent, or 4D, cone-beam CT (4DCBCT) images. 4DCBCT can have a variety of applications in the radiotherapy of moving targets, such as lung tumors, including treatment planning, dose verification, and real time treatment adaptation. However, in its current incarnation it suffers from poor reconstruction quality and limited temporal resolution that may restrict its efficacy. Our algorithm remedies these issues by deforming a previously acquired high quality reference fan-beam CT (FBCT) to match the projection data in the 4DCBCT data-set, essentially creating a …

The (Plethodon nettingi) Cheat Mountain Salamander is a rare and endangered species that relies heavily on (Picea rubens) Red Spruce for habitat. P. rubens communities on the Cheat Mountain range in West Virginia have been disturbed by fires and logging, and regeneration of P. rubens stands are central to the survival of the P. netting. A supervised and unsupervised landscape classification of three Landsat images over the past 26 years was conducted to analyze change in P. rubens communities on Cheat Mountain Range. Change detection results revealed that from 1986-2012 a 52% growth increase of P. rubens stands, 18% loss, …

Effects Of Short-Term Minocycline Treatments On Inflammatory Cell Response In The Acute Stage Following Tbi, Henna Ayub Apr 2013

Effects Of Short-Term Minocycline Treatments On Inflammatory Cell Response In The Acute Stage Following Tbi, Henna Ayub

Theses and Dissertations

Following traumatic brain injury (TBI), neuroinflammation contributes to the secondary injury. Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), and when activated can exert either protective or detrimental effects on surrounding tissue. They are often segregated into subpopulations based on their type of activation, either pro- inflammatory (M1, classically activated), or anti-inflammatory (M2, alternatively activated). Minocycline, an anti-inflammatory drug, is known to be neuroprotective and to have effect on microglia. However, the effect of minocycline on subpopulations of inflammatory cells in the acute stage following injury is unclear. It is also unclear whether minocycline has a …

Birds Of Prey, Shauna Kirkland Apr 2013

Birds Of Prey, Shauna Kirkland

Theses and Dissertations

As a child growing up, I was always in love with the ritual of “dress up”. Whether it was my dolls, various reluctant pets, or myself, it was always an activity I loved. It is not surprising then that adornment has become the medium through which I express myself and bring my fantasy world to life. Jewelry and accessory have the potential to lead many lives. One particular piece can change entirely by putting it on one body as opposed to another, or by removing it to see it as an object. In fashion, the body is the canvas and …

Actual Entities: A Control Method For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Erica Absetz Apr 2013

Actual Entities: A Control Method For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Erica Absetz

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is on Actual Entities, a concept created by the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, and how the concept can be applied to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as a behavioral control method. Actual Entities are vector based, atomic units that use a method called prehension to observe their environment and react with various actions. When combining multiple Actual Entities a Colony of Prehending Entities is created; when observing their prehensions an intelligent behavior emerges. By applying the characteristics of Actual Entities to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, specifically in a situation where they are searching for targets, this emergent, intelligent …

Camk-Ii: An Integral Protein In Cell Migration, Jamie Josephine Avila Mcleod Apr 2013

Camk-Ii: An Integral Protein In Cell Migration, Jamie Josephine Avila Mcleod

Theses and Dissertations

Coordinated inductive and morphogenetic processes of gastrulation establish the zebrafish body plan. Gastrulation includes massive cell rearrangements to generate the three germ layers and shape the embryonic body. Three modes of cell migration must occur during vertebrate gastrulation and include: epiboly, internalization of the presumptive mesendoderm and convergent extension (C&E). C&E movements narrow the germ layers mediolaterally (convergence) and elongate them anteroposteriorly (extension) to define the embryonic axis. The molecular mechanisms regulating coordinated cell migrations remain poorly understand and studying these has become of great interest to researchers. Understanding cell migration during development is highly relevant to a number of …

The Inflammasome In Acute Myocarditis, Harsha Kannan Apr 2013

The Inflammasome In Acute Myocarditis, Harsha Kannan

Theses and Dissertations

Acute myocarditis is an acute inflammatory syndrome characterized by myocardial damage and dysfunction often due to a viral infection followed by a variable development over time. There are currently no specific treatments and standard treatments for heart failure are generally applied. The inflammasome is a recently identified macromolecular structure that occupies a central role in the amplification of the inflammatory response and promotion of cell death during acute and chronic infections. We hypothesized the formation of the inflammasome in acute myocarditis. To investigate, samples of patients were collected from the Cardiomyopathy Registry in Trieste, with 12 cases of biopsy-proven myocarditis …

Defining The Functions Of A Conserved Hydrophobic Domain In The Arf Tumor Suppressor, Aymen Hariz Apr 2013

Defining The Functions Of A Conserved Hydrophobic Domain In The Arf Tumor Suppressor, Aymen Hariz

Theses and Dissertations

The INK4A-ARF locus encodes two tumor suppressors; p16 and p19Arf, both of which restrain cell growth by regulating the functions of Retinoblastoma (Rb) and p53 respectively. Throughout development, p19Arf is kept at minimal levels, but under conditions of oncogenic stress, p19Arf expression is induced and its tumor suppressive activities are mediated through the stabilization of p53 or in a p53-independent manner. Introducing a point mutation (L46D) into the conserved hydrophobic domain (37-51) in p19Arf annulled ARF/CtBP2 interaction and mediated cell survival by rendering cells irresponsive to apoptosis. In vivo analysis on the percentage of lymphoma free survivals in ARFL46D/L46D mice …

The Activation, Receptor Complexing And Endogenous Regulation Of The Type-I Interferon Response As It Pertains To Innate Immunity, James D. Marion Jr. Apr 2013

The Activation, Receptor Complexing And Endogenous Regulation Of The Type-I Interferon Response As It Pertains To Innate Immunity, James D. Marion Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

To defend against pathogen challenge, multi-cellular organisms mount an immune response that recognizes, sequesters and eradicates invading infectious agents. Critical to this safeguard is the receptor-mediated detection of pathogens. Pathogen recognition then initiates a variety of signaling cascades that lead to the modulation of genes orchestrating an immune response. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), a transmembrane receptor found in endosomes, is vital to the innate immune response against viruses. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) stimulation of TLR3 initiates a signaling cascade that leads to the production of type-I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines necessary to trigger the protective defenses of the immune system. Critical …

Art And Becoming-Animal: Reconceptualizing The Animal Imagery In Dorothea Tanning's Post-1955 Paintings, Samantha Karam Apr 2013

Art And Becoming-Animal: Reconceptualizing The Animal Imagery In Dorothea Tanning's Post-1955 Paintings, Samantha Karam

Theses and Dissertations

In 1955, American artist Dorothea Tanning abandoned her figurative Surrealist renderings of dream-like scenarios in favor of a complexly abstract and fragmented style of painting. With few exceptions, the ways in which Tanning’s later works function independently of her earlier paintings tends to be downplayed in the scholarship on her oeuvre. Equally sparse is the scholarship on Tanning’s dog imagery, which pervades her oeuvre but becomes most apparent in her later phase. This thesis seeks to shift attention toward Tanning’s later abstract paintings; it also seeks to fill the gap in scholarship on Tanning’s dogs. Specifically, through the study of …

Visual Communication On Cajamarca Ceramics From Pre-Hispanic Peru, 1000 - 1460 Ce, Jeanette Nicewinter

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzes a database of 118 ceramic sherds that were excavated from the Late Intermediate Period site of Yanaorco, located in the Cajamarca region of the north highlands in present-day Peru, for vessel form, style, and imagery. Through the placement of these sherds within the context of inter-community feasting events that took place at Yanaorco, fineware ceramic vessels are interpreted as prestige items that were utilized by the elite to further differentiate themselves from other community citizens. By examining key examples of representational and non-representational imagery depicted on the sherds, an understanding of the social agency of the vessel …

My Mechanics Of Justification, Veronika Pausova Apr 2013

My Mechanics Of Justification, Veronika Pausova

Theses and Dissertations

This document examines the theory behind the process leading to my paintings, as well as the content of the images I use. The former will invoke romanticism, infinite possibilities, and the need for having certain parameters and flexible rules. The latter will talk about sentimentality and contemporary culture. I will explain the mechanics of justifying the choice of a particular way of painting: the push and pull between the loaded content of an image versus the language of painting itself.

Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser Apr 2013

Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser

Theses and Dissertations

Feminist art historians reassessed French Impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, a period in which her work coincidentally received steady exposure in major museum exhibitions. This thesis examines how the feminist art historical project intersects with exhibitions that give prominence to Morisot’s work. Critical reviews by Morisot scholars argue that more frequent display of the artist’s work has not correlated to nuanced interpretation. Moreover, prominent feminist scholars and museum theorists maintain that curators virtually exclude their contributions. Attending to these recurrent concerns, this thesis charts shifts in emphases and inquiry in writing centered on …

Orthogonal Expression Of Metabolic Pathways, George Howard Mcarthur Iv Apr 2013

Orthogonal Expression Of Metabolic Pathways, George Howard Mcarthur Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Microbial metabolism can be tailored to meet human specifications, but the degree to which these living systems can be repurposed is still unknown. Artificial biological control strategies are being developed with the goal of enabling the predictable implementation of novel biological functions (e.g., engineered metabolism). This dissertation project contributes genetic tools useful for modulating gene expression levels (extending promoters with UP elements) and isolating transcription and translation of engineered DNA from the endogenous cellular network (expression by orthogonal cellular machinery), which have been demonstrated in Escherichia coli for the production of lycopene, a 40-carbon tetraterpene carotenoid with antioxidant activity and …

Trophies, Plaques, And Rewards: An Application Of Cognitive Evaluation Theory To Volunteer Motivation., John Kim Apr 2013

Trophies, Plaques, And Rewards: An Application Of Cognitive Evaluation Theory To Volunteer Motivation., John Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Using Cognitive Evaluation Theory, this research evaluated the impact non-monetary extrinsic incentives in the form of department t-shirts had on the intrinsic motivation of Virginia career and volunteer firefighters. Intrinsic motivation was measured using the Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS). The survey was administered to a randomly selected sample of firefighters. Data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results suggested that the department t-shirt did not have a statistically significant impact on intrinsic motivation of both career and volunteer firefighters. Additionally, this study suggested that volunteer firefighters did not perceive salary as an inequitable reward. This was exhibited …

Ethanol Regulation Of Glucocorticoid Responsive Genes, Blair Costin Apr 2013

Ethanol Regulation Of Glucocorticoid Responsive Genes, Blair Costin

Theses and Dissertations

Glucocorticoid hormones modulate acute and chronic behavioral and molecular responses to drugs of abuse including psychostimulants and opioids. Acute ethanol activates the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis causing the release of adrenal glucocorticoid hormones, but following chronic ethanol the HPA axis is dysregulated in both humans and rodents. Thus, there is growing evidence that glucocorticoids might also modulate behavioral and molecular responses to ethanol. Previous microarray studies in the Miles’ laboratory have shown that the well-known glucocorticoid responsive gene, Serum and Glucocorticoid-regulated Kinase 1, Sgk1, is prominently up regulated by acute ethanol (2 g/kg) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of …

Multiple-Instance And One-Class Rule-Based Algorithms, Dat Nguyen Apr 2013

Multiple-Instance And One-Class Rule-Based Algorithms, Dat Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

In this work we developed rule-based algorithms for multiple-instance learning and one-class learning problems, namely, the mi-DS and OneClass-DS algorithms. Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) is a variation of classical supervised learning where there is a need to classify bags (collection) of instances instead of single instances. The bag is labeled positive if at least one of its instances is positive, otherwise it is negative. One-class learning problem is also known as outlier or novelty detection problem. One-class classifiers are trained on data describing only one class and are used in situations where data from other classes are not available, and also …

The Art Of Perl: How A Scripting Language (Inter)Activated The World Wide Web, Norberto Gomez Jr. Apr 2013

The Art Of Perl: How A Scripting Language (Inter)Activated The World Wide Web, Norberto Gomez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In 1987, computer programmer and linguist Larry Wall authored the general-purpose, high-level, interpreted, dynamic Unix scripting language, Perl. Borrowing features from C and awk, Perl was originally intended as a scripting language for text-processing. However, with the rising popularity of the Internet and the advent of Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web (Web), in the 1990s, Perl soon became the glue-language for the Internet, due in large part to its relationship to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Perl was the go-to language for on the fly program writing and coding, gaining accolades from the likes …

Characterization Of The Neurotrophic Factor Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) In Intestinal Smooth Muscle Cells, Mohammad Alqudah Apr 2013

Characterization Of The Neurotrophic Factor Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) In Intestinal Smooth Muscle Cells, Mohammad Alqudah

Theses and Dissertations

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) belongs to the neurotrophin family of secreted proteins, which include in addition to BDNF, nerve growth factor (NGF) and neurotrophin 3-6 (NT-3-6). BDNF mediates its functions by activating two cell surface receptors, pan-neurotrophin receptor (P75NTR) and tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) and their downstream intracellular cascades. BDNF is best known for its role in neuronal survival, regulation of neuronal differentiation, migration and activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. However, BDNF is widely expressed in non-neuronal tissues as well. The localization and the function of BDNF in intestinal smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are not well defined. Thus, the main purpose of …
