Reinforced Behavioral Variability In The Valproate Rat Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ann Galizio, Amy L. Odum Apr 2022

Reinforced Behavioral Variability In The Valproate Rat Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ann Galizio, Amy L. Odum

Psychology Faculty Publications

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to display restricted, repetitive behaviors and deficits in social interaction. Rats exposed to valproate (VPA) in utero have been shown to model symptoms of ASD. In previous research, VPA rats engaged in less social interaction and more repetitive responding than controls. The purpose of the present study was to further investigate behavioral variability in the VPA rat model of ASD by testing VPA and control rats in a reinforced-behavioral-variability operant task. In this procedure, rats emitted sequences of lever presses, some of which produced food. During baseline, food was delivered probabilistically, and …

Asilomar: A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Ywca In Women's Leadership Development As An Absent Narrative In The History Of Hrd, Kenneth R. Bartlett, Susan R. Madsen, Michael Valesano, Ying Feng Apr 2022

Asilomar: A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Ywca In Women's Leadership Development As An Absent Narrative In The History Of Hrd, Kenneth R. Bartlett, Susan R. Madsen, Michael Valesano, Ying Feng

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

The dominant narrative on the history of training and development, especially in the United States, reflects entrenched gender bias with little acknowledgment of human resource development (HRD) designed for and delivered by women. The role of women’s organizations as forces for social change, advocates for gender equality, and providers of leadership development are significant areas of HRD history largely ignored in the literature. This historical study considers archival records on the former YWCA Asilomar Conference Grounds, near Monterey, California which was the first conference training facility owned by a women’s organization in the US. The study is focused on the …

Implementation Of Telemedicine Within Francophone Countries, Kaleb Keller Apr 2022

Implementation Of Telemedicine Within Francophone Countries, Kaleb Keller

WLC/CSPH Symposium

Improving access to healthcare within medical deserts is a central goal to many government and healthcare leaders. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world saw an increase of technology used for daily tasks that were no longer possible due to the virus. One of these is the use of telemedicine. France and other French-speaking portions of Europe have been a leader in developing new telemedical platforms and research to aid in improving access to healthcare within medical deserts such as Sub-Saharan (francophone) Africa or French Polynesia. The following research aims at providing a specialized view of francophone countries …

Remembering The War: A Study On Japanese War-Themed Animation, Sariah Lichtenberg Apr 2022

Remembering The War: A Study On Japanese War-Themed Animation, Sariah Lichtenberg

WLC/CSPH Symposium

The medium of animation is a beautiful one that reflects life. So many things like music, lighting, art styles, and people, themselves, all come together to tell a story. Some can be fun and lighthearted like a romance or a comedy. Then, others can be more somber and dark like in a tragedy or thriller. Often it is those more somber ones that can stick with us, and looking to Japan brings a good example. After the effects of World War II, Japan was impacted greatly, and means to cope, they use the arts to deal with those pent-up emotions …

Fungal communities can influence the productivity, composition, and survival of trees through cycling nutrients, providing resources, and altering pathogens. Thus, shifts in fungal communities could impact forests by altering interactions between trees and their environments. Fungal community composition may be shaped by stochastic and deterministic processes such as dispersal-limitation, environmental filtering, and partner specificity between trees and fungi. For tree species with large geographic ranges, we expect fungal assembly processes to change with environmental variation across the range of the tree partner. Due to specificity between trees and symbiotic fungi, we expect deterministic to outweigh stochastic processes in root compared …

A Review Of Avian-Inspired Morphing For Uav Flight Control, Christina Harvey, Lawren L. Gamble, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker, James J. Joo, Daniel J. Inman Apr 2022

A Review Of Avian-Inspired Morphing For Uav Flight Control, Christina Harvey, Lawren L. Gamble, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker, James J. Joo, Daniel J. Inman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The impressive maneuverability demonstrated by birds has so far eluded comparably sized uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). Modern studies have shown that birds’ ability to change the shape of their wings and tail in flight, known as morphing, allows birds to actively control their longitudinal and lateral flight characteristics. These advances in our understanding of avian flight paired with advances in UAV manufacturing capabilities and applications has, in part, led to a growing field of researchers studying and developing avian-inspired morphing aircraft. Because avian-inspired morphing bridges at least two distinct fields (biology and engineering), it becomes challenging to compare and contrast …

‘The Chronicle Of Nightmares’: Emergency Nurses’ Frontstage And Backstage Communication In The Emergency Department, Sydney O'Shay

Publications

Effective emergency nurse-patient (EN) communication and ENs’ communication with other healthcare workers have implications for patient outcomes. Effective EN-patient communication informs and empowers patients. This study sought to better understand ENs frontstage and backstage interactions in a metropolitan emergency department (ED). The researcher engaged in participant observation of 15 different ENs’ healthcare interactions with patients and other healthcare workers in the ED for a total of 47 hours and 30 minutes. Iterative analysis of field notes builds reveal two key observations. First, frontstage and backstage spaces are fluid in nature, where healthcare workers simultaneously engage in backstage and frontstage communication …

The Status Of Utah Pacific Islander Women, Jessica C. Hill, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen Apr 2022

The Status Of Utah Pacific Islander Women, Jessica C. Hill, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2021, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute reported that “Utah ranks as the 34th most racially and ethnically diverse state in the nation, with 22% of the state identifying as other than non-Hispanic White.”1 As the state continues to become more diverse, it is critical that the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) conducts and reports research focused on women of color. As the UWLP focuses on strengthening the impact of all Utah girls and women, research that increases our understanding of the status and experiences of girls and women within all social and identity groups—including race and …
