Capturing Multiple Full-Scene Images With A Single Camera Via Aperture Stop Exploitation, Aaron J. Pung
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
In an effort to increase the capability of modern camera systems, recent advances in imaging technology have seen the maturation of post-processing algorithms, multi-spectral imagers, and scene-splitting techniques. Although highly enabling, each of these methods faces an inherent limitation imposed by the geometry of the camera. By re-evaluating the fundamental components of the camera, this study presents a new method and paradigm in capturing and processing scene information

Broom Snakeweed Extracts Dosed To Late-Term Pregnant Cattle Do Not Cause Premature Parturition, Dale R. Gardner, Benedict T. Green, Bryan L. Stegelmeier, Kevin D. Welch
Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
Broom snakeweed [Gutierrezia sarothrae (Pursh) Britton and Rusby] and threadleaf snakeweed [G. microcephala (DC.) A. Gray] are found on many rangelands in western North America. Snakeweeds are generally unpalatable; however, animals will graze them when other forage is not available and there are field reports that pregnant cows that graze snakeweeds may abort calves. Subsequent feeding studies using fresh cut snakeweed, ground and gavaged into pregnant cattle have failed to reproduce abortions, though it was evident that at high doses snakeweed quickly damaged the rumen microflora resulting in severe rumen atony, bloating and acidosis. We report here an …

Librarians are often referred to as information professionals and talk of the "information industry," but how much do we actually know about the business side of publishing and library vendors? As vendors and publishers continue to consolidate, and costs increase for libraries and our communities, the business side of libraries deserves greater scrutiny from the library community which often shies away from critically examining our role in the greater information industry. Building our awareness and engaging in critical discourse of the library industry is essential for securing our bargaining power, navigating our role as stewards of our collections, and situating …

USU Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Services unit investigated the discoverability of local Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids. The research team put two versions of the same finding aid online with one described at the file (box or folder) level and the other described at the item level. Over a year later the team pulled the analytics for each guide and assessed the descriptive level most frequently accessed as well as the search terms patrons utilized and where they were found in finding aid tags. Presenters will discuss the methodology of the project and research outcomes.
Model Averaging In Agriculture And Natural Resources: What Is It? When Is It Useful? When Is It A Distraction?, Philip M. Dixon
Model Averaging In Agriculture And Natural Resources: What Is It? When Is It Useful? When Is It A Distraction?, Philip M. Dixon
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
I use two examples to illustrate three methods for model averaging: using AIC weights, using BIC weights, and fully Bayesian analyses. The first example is a capture-recapture study that estimates the population size by averaging over 4 models for capture probabilities. The second is an analysis of a study of logging impacts on Curculionid weevils using a before-after-control-impact (BACI) study design. The estimated impact is averaged over 4 ecologically relevant models.
Both examples demonstrate the sensitivity of model weights, or posterior model probabilities, to the choice of prior model probabilities and prior distributions for parameters. The model averaged estimates and …

Starting in 2018, Utah State University Libraries undertook a largescale cataloging project to modernize the University Archives. Before 2018 the University Archives was largely inaccessible to patrons with only 2% of collections having online finding aids and no existing electronic shelf list inventory. Using a workflow-driven approach, a team of catalogers, archivists, and student technicians embarked on a four-phase journey to inventory over 21,000 items, create EAD finding aids and MARC catalog records for over 2700 unique collections, and ingesting all collections into the Library’s newly implemented archival management system. Presenters will discuss the process developed, tools used, and outcomes …
Invest In Farm Water Conservation To Curtail Buy And Dry, David E. Rosenberg
Invest In Farm Water Conservation To Curtail Buy And Dry, David E. Rosenberg
Publications
The term buy-and-dry plays to the fears of farm and ranch communities. In Owens Valley, CA in the early 1900s and Palo Verde Irrigation District, CA today, wealthy urban water providers buy up water rights, dry out farms and ranches, export purchased water out of basin to growing cities, or keep water in storage to counter reservoir draw down (James, 2021). As more farmers and ranchers sell their water rights, local businesses—irrigation, farm equipment, seed, and other agricultural firms—contract. Those contractions encourage more farmers and ranchers to sell 15 their water rights and farms. And a negative feedback loop gains …

A Robust Clustering Method Using Compositional Data Restrictions: Studying Wood Properties In The Reforestation Of Portugal, Pamela M. Chiroque-Solano, Guido A. Moreira
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
Classification of multivariate observations while preserving the data’s natural restriction is a challenge. Special properties such as identifiability, interpretability, and others need to be cared for to build a new approach. To avoid these complications, many transformation algorithms have been developed to use traditional models. In this context, the aim of this work is to propose a robust probabilistic distance algorithm to classify compositional data. Based on the probabilistic distance (PD) clustering approach, the proposal identifies clusters minimizing a joint distance function, JDF, which is part of a dissimilarity measure. This measure combines the PD clustering approach with the density of …

Data on insemination records of Holstein Friesian (HF) purebred (n=45,497) and crossbred (n=58,497) collected from the BAIF Research Foundation were utilized. The conception rate was modeled as a binary trait, using linear repeatability models. Random regression models (RRM) were used to obtain the trajectory of variance components across age of the bulls. Legendre Polynomials up to order of fit of 4 were used for the random effects of additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. 200,000 Gibbs samples were generated with a burn-in of 20,000 and thinning interval of 50 using the THRGIBBS1F90 program. Heritability estimates were very low (0.1) in …

Utah is becoming increasingly diverse, and this has brought wide disparities between most minority groups and the White population in terms of education, housing, and health outcomes.1 Last year, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah released a report on race, ethnicity, and sex that started the conversation more broadly, and now the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) is expanding and deepening this discussion by focusing a series of research snapshots on Utah women of color. As the UWLP focuses on strengthening the impact of all Utah girls and women, research that increases our …

Principal Response Curve Analysis Of Arthropod Community Abundance Data With Sparse Subsets, Changjian Jiang, C. R. Brown, P. Asiimwe, Chen Meng, Adam W. Schapaugh
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
Principal response curve (PRC) analysis was applied to an assessment of the ecological impact of the genetically-modified (GM), insect-resistant, cotton MON 88702 on predatory Hemiptera communities in the field. The field community was represented by ten taxa collected ten times across the season at six sites, in which individual taxa were not observed in at least 25% of the time (unique site x collection combinations). These complete absences and those nearly so, called sparse subsets of the data in this investigation, were the result of geoclimatic and seasonal variations, which are both independent of the treatment effect for which the …

Handling Non-Detects With Imputation In A Nested Design: A Simulation Study, Rose Adjei, John R. Stevens
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
In this paper, a simulation study was conducted to assess whether it is ideal to address the issue of non-detects in data using a traditional substitution approach for non-detects, imputation, or a non-imputation based approach. Simulated data used were simple nested designs motivated by a real-life data in a study of bumble bee activity in a commercial cherry orchard by Kuivila et al. (2021). The simulated data were generated at different thresholds or censoring levels and at different effect sizes. For each simulated data, seven popular existing techniques to handle non-detects were applied: (i) Zero substitution, (ii) Substitution with half …

Overview Of Optimal Experimental Design And A Survey Of Its Expanse In Application To Agricultural Studies, Stephen J. Walsh
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
Optimal Design of Experiments is currently recognized as the modern dominant approach to planning experiments in industrial engineering and manufacturing applications. This approach to design has gained traction among practitioners in the last two decades on two-fronts: 1) optimal designs are the result of a complicated optimization calculation and recent advances in both computing efficiency and algorithms have enabled this approach in real time for practitioners, and 2) such designs are now popular because they allow the researcher to ‘design for the experiment’ by working constraints, cost, number of experiments, and the model of the intended post-hoc data analysis into …

Journal of Western Archives
With a long history at the University of Arizona with excellence in the lunar and planetary sciences, the University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections has increased its collecting of the History of Science and Technology. These large, modern space collections pose unique challenges and require specific needs to be addressed in order for the collections to be stored, processed and made available for access. It is essential for archivists working with these collections to ask their donors the right questions and learn the limitations and restrictions that often come with acquiring modern space collections. Archives around the country have started …

Effective Conservation Of Desert Riverscapes Requires Protection And Rehabilitation Of In-Stream Flows With Rehabilitation Approaches Tailored To Water Availability, Casey A. Pennock, Phaedra Budy, William W. Macfarlane
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Desert riverscape rehabilitation practitioners must contend with compounding effects of increasing human water demand, persistent drought, non-native species establishment, and climate change, which further stress desert riverine ecosystems such as rivers in the Colorado River basin, United States. Herein, we provide our perspective on the importance of natural flows, large floods in particular, for successful conservation and rehabilitation of riverscapes. We present ideas developed from our experience with rehabilitation projects across multiple desert tributary rivers with varying levels of habitat degradation and water abstraction. We propose spatially extensive measures such as protection of in-stream flows, tailoring rehabilitation efforts to available …

Transforming curriculum by implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in the college-level classroom helps students internalize the concepts of a course, improve their critical and reflective thinking skills, learn to problem-solve using questioning, and ultimately construct a better understanding of course concepts in a personally relevant way. This article introduces a process for implementing PBL in a college-level course. Each of the four main ideas in PBL, motivation, collaboration, reflection, and facilitation, are addressed with a particular focus on the role of the educator in designing and implementing PBL in the classroom. An …
