Fatigue Life Predictions Of Additively Manufactured Components For Satelite Structures, Daniel G. Miller, Ryan A. Kemnitz, Ramana V. Grandhi, Luke C. Sheridan
Fatigue Life Predictions Of Additively Manufactured Components For Satelite Structures, Daniel G. Miller, Ryan A. Kemnitz, Ramana V. Grandhi, Luke C. Sheridan
Small Satellite Conference
The fatigue life properties of Additive Manufactured (AM) components are limited due to the defects naturally generated from the AM Process. For limited design life problems the finite fatigue life El-Haddad model linked defect size, applied stress, and design life. This paper developed a method to predict the smallest defect of interest for a given load case and the lowest failure generating stress for a given defect size. Experimental testing validated the method steps. The model was adjusted to demonstrate the space utility based on a 12U CubeSat chassis. Applying the design life and expected load, the finite fatigue life …

Autonomous System-Level Fault Diagnosis In Satellites Using Housekeeping Telemetry, Evana Gizzi, Hayley Owens, Nicholas Pellegrino, Christopher Trombley, James Marshall, Jivko Sinapov
Small Satellite Conference
To continue the growing success of scientific discovery through deep space exploration, missions need to be able to be able to travel further and operate more efficiently than ever before. To ensure resilience in this capability, on-board autonomous fault mitigation methods must be developed and matured. To this end, we present a system for cross-subsystem fault diagnosis of satellites using spacecraft telemetry. Our system leverages a combination of Kalman Filters, Autoencoders, and Causality algorithms. We test our system for accuracy against three data sets of varying complexity levels, along with baseline testing. Additionally, we perform an ablation study to evaluate …

Regolith And Host Rock Influences On Co2 Leakage: Active Source Seismic Profiling Across The Little Grand Wash Fault, Utah, Lee M. Liberty, Jonathan Yelton, Elin Skurtveit, Alvar Braathen, Ivar Midtkandal, James P. Evans
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Understanding carbon dioxide (CO2) reservoir to surface migration is crucial to successful carbon capture and sequestration approaches; especially fault/reservoir interactions under injection pressure. Through seismic imaging, we explore regolith and shallow stratigraphy across the Little Grand Wash fault. The presence of natural CO2 seeps, travertine and tufa deposits confirm modern and ancient fault-controlled CO2 leakage. We consider this an analogue for a long-failed sequestration site. We estimate bulk porosity and fracture density for host rock, regolith, and fault zone from petrophysical relationships. When combined with existing geochemical and geological data, we characterize a 60 m wide …

Level Down To Level Up: The Impact Of Item-Level Description On Finding Aid Discoverability, Paul Daybell, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen, Liz Woolcott
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Utah State University Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Services unit investigated the discoverability of local Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids using different levels of description. The research team created two nearly identical versions of the same finding aid for five collections and posted them online. The only difference in the finding aids was the level to which the collection contents were described. For each collection, one version of the finding aid was described at the file (box or folder) level and the other version was described at the item level. Over a year later the team pulled the analytics for …

Tele-Intervention Resources, Pam Dawson M.Ed., Rachel Glade Ph.D.
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
The restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic forced many early intervention (EI) providers and families to adopt an emergency virtual service delivery model. The exigent nature of the pandemic necessitated the rapid transition to virtual early intervention, often without the benefit of training and guidance for both providers and caregivers regarding the use of virtual platforms, objectives, procedures, and the overall dynamics of the virtual session. As restrictions begin to ease and in-person home visits once again become possible, many providers and caregivers may be wondering how tele-intervention (TI) services might fit in ongoing early intervention for children who are deaf …

Achieving Successful Outcomes In A Teleintervention Program, K. Todd Houston, Lauri Nelson, Brianna Job
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
For well over a decade, family-centered early intervention services have been delivered through models of teleintervention (TI) to children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) and their families. Ongoing outcome data continue to demonstrate the viability, effectiveness, and positive impacts these services provide to both the service providers and the families served. However, to establish a successful TI program, careful planning is required, and barriers and potential roadblocks must be reduced or eliminated. When these challenges are adequately addressed, TI programs are more likely to achieve its primary goal of delivering appropriate family-centered early intervention.

Training The Next Generation Of Practitioners In Early Intervention And Telepractice: Three University Models, K. Todd Houston, Lauri Nelson, Kristina Blaiser
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to shape the provision of family-centered early intervention services for children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and their families. In programs, schools, and centers, direct in-person contact with families have been significantly curtailed as a means to limit the exposure to and spead of the virus. Emergency remote learning has lead to an increase in telepractice, also referred to as teleintervention, as the designated model of service provision. Most early interventionists, speech-language pathologists, and teachers of the Deaf were not sufficiently trained to suddenly implement emergency remote teaching or telepractice services, but service providers had no …

Telepractice-Based Assessment Of Children Who Are Deaf/Hard-Of-Hearing: Focus On Family-Centered Practice, Kristina M. Blaiser, Lauri Nelson, K. Todd Houston
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Ongoing assessment and progress monitoring is considered best practice to serve children who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) yet logistics related to provider shortages, distances between families, and illness make regular assessment difficult if not impossible. In the last ten years, telepractice has become a more commonly used service delivery model for serving children who are DHH and their families, however, many providers lack the training needed to adequately assess this population (Behl & Kahn, 2015). With explicit planning of the assessments and tools needed on both sides of the camera, providers can create a shared framework to collect the information needed …

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Tele-intervention services have been utilized for many years to serve families of young children, in addition to or in lieu of traditional in-person intervention services. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic cultivated urgent dependence on access to effective services via a distance connection. As such, the need for information, guidance, and resources related to tele-intervention as a primary service model has increased. This article serves as the introduction to a monographic series aiming to describe practices, circumstances, and perceptions surrounding tele-intervention services for families of children aged birth to five who are deaf or hard of hearing. Topics include: (a) a brief …

The resource sharing community has a proud history of sharing knowledge through conferences, workshops, and online resources in support of training and development. People have enjoyed these opportunities and received various levels of benefit depending on access and whether instruction aligns with the methods they learn best. However, it is clear there aren't enough collective actions to meet the needs. We hosted a series of focus groups on training and development to find out from participants what has worked for them, what is still needed, how they learn best, and the types of training and information that will help them …

Aspen seedlings for boreal mine reclamation
Bradley Pinno
Trembling aspen is a major component of the forests in Alberta. Aspen is an early successional species which occurs in both pure and mixed stands. It also provides the timber for pulp mills and oriented strand board mills with a harvest rate of nearly 12M m3 (5.08 BBF) of aspen timber annually in Alberta. Aspen normally regenerates vigorously after disturbance from root suckers in the range of 10,000–100,000 stems per hectare. However, after industrial disturbances such as mining or the creation of well sites where the soil has been removed, root …

California’s freshwater ecosystems—its lakes, rivers, floodplains, meadows, natural and managed wetlands, and estuaries—are a vital part of the state’s natural infrastructure. These ecosystems provide numerous benefits, including water supply, hydropower, flood control, fisheries, recreation, and cultural and aesthetic value. They are also home to the nation’s most diverse array of plant and animal communities, with numerous freshwater species found only in California (Jensen et al. 1993; Grantham et al. 2017).

Spacecraft Formation Flying Control Switching Surface Based On Relative Orbital Elements, Tyson K. Smith, John Akagi, Greg Droge
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
The development of a switching surface constraint based on the D’Amico relative orbital elements (ROE) is presented in this paper. Relative orbital elements give a more intuitive understanding of how the relative motion of a cluster of satellites changes with time and allows the control algorithm to take advantage of the natural dynamic motion. This work models each vehicle using a model predictive control (MPC) approach, based on the Hill-Clohessey-Whiltshire (HCW) equations, to plan maneuvers which are simulated using a high-fidelity motion model. An ROE based convex polytope switching surface is added to the MPC formulation to force the states …

Dams alter flow regimes, fragment rivers, and harm freshwater ecosystems (Munsch et al. 2022; Barbarossa et al. 2020). Yet, freshwater ecosystems are increasingly dependent on surface reservoirs for environmental flows and suitable water temperatures as rivers have become irrevocably altered by water development, consumptive water uses, land use change, and climate change (Grantham et al. 2020; Yarnell et al. 2020). This creates a paradox where dams have contributed to freshwater ecosystem decline, but are now instrumental for managing environmental water and enhancing downstream ecosystems.

Myside Bias Shifting In The Written Arguments Of First Year Composition Students, Lezlie Christensen-Branum
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation reports on research conducted to better understand how college student writers learned to work against their own biases as they researched and wrote arguments. I conducted a review of former studies to design a curriculum that would help students avoid bias and increase their ability to write arguments tailored to specific readers in ways that accomplish their goals. This review also informed the kinds of data to be collected and analyzed in order to accomplish the research goal, which was to understand whether and how each of seven students enrolled in a composition course reduced their biases. I …

Executive Orders On A Political Timeline: Examination Of Executive Orders In The Supreme Court And Stephen Skowronek's Theory Of Presidential Leadership, Alisha Rachele Urrutia
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The research performed here applies a theoretical model of the presidency by Stephen Skowronek that spans all of American history to the number of executive orders issued per president and the number of these orders argued before the Supreme Court per president. I hypothesized that presidents who have the fewest political resources available to them (disjunctive presidents) would issue the most executive orders, and presidents who transform the face of American government and politics (reconstructionists) would face the most Supreme Court cases dealing with executive orders. I created two datasets for this research and used descriptive statistics to evaluate these …

Recognizing And Reducing Ambiguity In Mathematics Curriculum And Relations Of Θ-Functions In Genus One And Two: A Geometric Perspective, Shantel Spatig
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Anxiety and mathematics come hand in hand for many individuals. This is due, in
part, to the fact that the only experience they have with mathematics is what some
mathematics educators refer to as "schoolmath," which uses a somewhat different
language than real mathematics. The language of schoolmath can cause individu-
als to have confusion and develop misconceptions related to several mathematical
concepts. One such concept is a fraction. In chapter one of this report, one possible
reason for this is discussed and a possible solution is purposed.
In chapter three of this report, genus-two curves admitting an elliptic involution …

Reversing The Gaze: Using Indigenous And Western Worldviews To Compare Coverage Of Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In The News Media, Gina Mccrackin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The news media acts as an important conduit for shaping societal views of the socio-politics of climate change. While climate change will indeed affect everyone, it will not affect everyone equally. Indigenous peoples are among the populations whose well-being is threatened the most by climate change. International scholarship finds it is not uncommon for Indigenous cultures, communities, and perspectives to be underrepresented and misrepresented in Western climate change media. Research also indicates that fair Indigenous representation occurs when Indigenous peoples are the authors of news articles themselves. We evaluated the differences in discussions of climate change and environmental issues …

Quantum computing has been an emerging technology in the past few decades. It utilizes the power of programmable quantum devices to perform computation, which can solve complex problems in a feasible time that is impossible with classical computers. Simulating quantum chemical systems using quantum computers is one of the most active research fields in quantum computing. However, due to the novelty of the technology and concept, most materials in the literature are not accessible for newbies in the field and sometimes can cause ambiguity for practitioners due to missing details.
This report provides a rigorous derivation of simulating quantum chemistry …
