Rural students, schools, and communities have unique challenges that hinder academic achievement, growth, and opportunities, compared to other locales. While there is a need to study this community more, there is also a pressing need to bring the local community members together to support the future generation of learners in developing pathways that lead them to future career opportunities. This article focuses on how a Research Practice Partnership (RPP) can be developed in rural communities to support STEM pathways for local middle-school youth. RPPs are often described as long-term collaborations between both researchers and practitioners in which the participating partners …

Food insecurity on college campuses is a major public health problem and has been documented for the last decade. Sufficient food access is a crucial social determinant of health, thus campuses across the country have implemented various programs, systems and policies to enhance access to food which have included food pantries, campus gardens, farmer’s markets, meal share or voucher programs, mobile food applications, campus food gleaning, food recovery efforts, meal deliveries, and task force/working groups. However, little is understood about how to best address food insecurity and support students who are struggling with basic needs. The impact of food insecurity …

Effects Of Volatile Compounds On Breakdown Field Strength Measurements Of Polymers, Megan Loveland Dewaal, Jr Dennison Nov 2022

Effects Of Volatile Compounds On Breakdown Field Strength Measurements Of Polymers, Megan Loveland Dewaal, Jr Dennison

Journal Articles

This study investigates the effects of absorbed water and volatile compounds on measurements of the electrostatic breakdown field strength. Comparisons are made between sets of pristine samples, ones that underwent a thorough vacuum bake out, and ones subsequently exposed to humid conditions to determine how quickly the samples reverted to an unbaked state. Specifically, we compared signatures related to an electrostatic breakdown (electrostatic breakdown field strength, frequency of pre-breakdown arcing, and flashover) and images of the arc damage sites. The work reports results for three prototypical polymeric dielectric materials: low density polyethylene (LDPE), polyether-etherketone (PEEK), and Nylon 66, listed in …

How Can We Help? A Guide To Substance Use Disorders, Stigma, And Harm Reduction, Erin Fanning Madden, Hilary Disch, Katie Zaman

Voices of Resiliency: Utah Stories of Substance Use Disorder, Stigma, & Harm Reduction

For people with a substance use disorder, stigma is a major barrier to recovery. When someone discloses their struggles with substance use, they risk being stigmatized by their families, friends, and even health care providers. Some treatment strategies, including harm reduction, are also stigmatized, making it difficult for people to access resources. Harm reduction is a set of strategies based on the core value of respect for the rights of people who use drugs. The goal of harm reduction is to help people stay safe while using substances and to connect them with medical professionals who offer evidence-based treatment for …

Facing forest change with humility

Jess Kirby

I feel the ultimate beauty of forests is their need for constant change and their willingness to adapt to new conditions. However, if there is one thing I have learned in twenty-five years of public service with federal, state, and local government, when it comes to forests, people do not like change. But ecological change, whether humans like it or not, is integral to healthy and resilient forested landscapes.

Stereotypes And Judgments About American Indian Peoples: Results From An Experimental Study, Raymond Orr, Katelyn Sharratt, Muhammad Iqbal Oct 2022

Stereotypes And Judgments About American Indian Peoples: Results From An Experimental Study, Raymond Orr, Katelyn Sharratt, Muhammad Iqbal

Journal of Indigenous Research

Native tribes and peoples are the subject of significant public scrutiny and judgement. Not only are many political interests aligned against Natives, but the presence of racial stereotypes and active discrimination have created difficult conditions in which American Indians are often invalidated as a people or polity through the retraction of their “authenticity” as an Indian, as perceived by outsiders. The process by which Natives are made “inauthentic” has been explored extensively in narrative and qualitative-based research. However, studies using experimental methods to determine the presence of underlying factors, such as racial bias or stereotypes, are scarce. To fill this …

Assessing Community Needs And Feedback: Using Photovoice To Gather Community Perspective, Morgan Aiwohi Torris-Hedlund, Adrienne Dillard, Sarah Momilani Marshall, Puni Kekauoha

Journal of Indigenous Research

Photovoice (PV) is a qualitative methodology grounded in community-based participatory research and Participatory Action Research. Photovoice asks participants to share photographs of their lived experiences to communicate their lives and the meaning of their concerns. Since its inception in the early 1990s, PV has been used in various settings worldwide to draw attention to the needs of participating communities. Though recognized as a robust research methodology because it can be easily adapted for different uses, PV offers a unique alternative for gathering feedback in a community from stakeholders. This paper provides an overview of PV, describes how the method is …

Colonization And The Introduction Of Alcohol To Native Hawaiians: Why Cultural Safety?, Cynthia T. Greywolf, John R. Lowe

Journal of Indigenous Research

Abstract

There has been a history of Western treatment modalities, interventions and research that has contributed to a deep distrust of among Native Hawaiians which contributes to health inequities and poor health outcomes. Native Hawaiians experience significantly higher rates of alcohol abuse than other ethnic groups in Hawaii. This article gives a brief historical account of the introduction and the impact of alcohol with Native Hawaiians. Indigenous researchers have identified colonization and historically traumatic events as precipitating causes of the current incidence and pervasiveness of alcohol use today. Interventions that reflect the history and traditions of Indigenous groups are generally not …

Round Robin Tests Of Electron Irradiated Polymers Via Pulsed Electroacoustic Measurements, Zachary Gibson, J. R. Dennison, Virginie Griseri Oct 2022

Round Robin Tests Of Electron Irradiated Polymers Via Pulsed Electroacoustic Measurements, Zachary Gibson, J. R. Dennison, Virginie Griseri

Physics Student Research

Charge accumulation and migration can be studied using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method to directly measure internal charge distributions in dielectric materials. This study aims to compare measurements using PEA systems constructed in labs at Utah State University and Université Paul Sabatier to establish confidence in comparing PEA results between different PEA systems. While there is good agreement in data measured for pristine samples with DC bias applied and no charge embedded, there are discrepancies in the data when measuring irradiated samples with embedded charge. The overall characteristics of charge distributions measured with both systems is clearly the same, but …

Moderators And Processes Of Change In A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Of Acceptance-Enhanced Behavior Therapy For Trichotillomania In Adolescents, Julie M. Petersen, Leila K. Capel, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Treatments for trichotillomania in adolescence have historically been under-researched. This paper presents secondary analyses of treatment moderators and processes of change from a pilot trial assessing the efficacy of teletherapy acceptance-enhanced behavior therapy (AEBT) in adolescents (N = 28). All participants received 10 sessions of AEBT and completed questionnaires at baseline, post-treatment, and longitudinal follow-up from three-, six-, and twelve-months. The moderation effects of baseline general psychological inflexibility, baseline trichotillomania-specific psychological inflexibility, age, and comorbid diagnoses were explored via multilevel modeling using longitudinal outcomes. Comorbid conditions significantly moderated treatment outcome, indicating that more comorbidity was associated with better outcome, even …
